Jeffrey Barnouw is Professor of English and comparative literature in the University of Texas at Austin. He has published numerous articles on Hobbes and written extensively on the history of ideas, especially 17th-and 18th-century thought. His latest research has concentrated on Greek philosophy and literature as well as their role in the later European tradition. His recent [Book Review]
