Abstract

The publication of the Byzantine lead seals kept in Austrian collections is one of the many projects initiated by the late Prof. Herbert Hunger under the auspices of the Kommission for Byzantinistik of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. The project is anticipated to be completed in three volumes, the first one of which appeared in Vienna in 1977 (henceforward Österreich I) and was dedicated to seals belonging to members of the imperial family and palace officials. The volume under review (henceforward Österreich II) is the second one in the series and presents seals belonging to officials of the central and provincial administration.
