Abstract

This thesis aims at comparing Kant's ethics with Wang Yang-ming's theory of hsin-hsing. The principle of the autonomy of will and the theory of 'hsin is li' are our primary focus. ;In the first chapter, we explain the meaning of will at first. Secondly we re-construct the argument for judging that will is the sole determining ground of moral law. Lastly we explain the objective and the subjective meaning of duty, ;The second chapter is divided into three sections. The first section explains the difference between categorical and hypothetical imperative. The second section is about the basic meaning of the three formulae of categorical imperative and the relations among them. The last section analyzes the detail meaning of the three formulae and their examples. ;The third chapter analyzes the meaning of hsin from the aspects of reason, feeling and will. Then we analyze the meaning of li . ;The forth chapter discusses about the fundamental theory of 'hsin is li' at first. Later we analyze Yang-ming's view of moral principle from the view of form, matter, and form and matter. ;Chapter five compares Kant's Wille and Willkur with Yang-ming's hsin and i from the aspects of reason, feeling and will. We point out that Kant respects reason, but he belittles feeling and will. Then we compare Kant's divine will and human will with Yang-ming's jen-hsin and tao-hsin. ;Chapter six compares the two philosophers' view of moral principle. We first compare their theory about human nature. Then, we compare their moral principle from the aspects of form, matter, and form and matter. We use the ideas of concrete universality, ends of non-mere-reason and autonomy of necessity to distinguish Yang-ming's view from that of Kant. ;In the last chapter, from the view of Confucianism we point out that Kant's moral theory is inferior to Yang-ming's, though his theory is more precise than the latter
