Abstract

Used for purposes related to tourism, advertising or politics, postcards allow the showcasing of different forms in which the urhan is represented. Identifyng exported visions of Montevideo through postcards published during the end of the 19" centuy and first decades of the 20", this paper shows how their publishers gave priority to the representation of news areas of the city instead of the more traditional. The intention with this was to portray the idea of progress and social welfare that immigrants, one of the main buyers of postcards at this time, wanted to transrmit to their relatives in their respective countries of origin
