Abstract

D. I. Pisarev belongs to the brilliant galaxy of Russian materialist thinkers, along with Belinskii, Herzen, Chernyshevskii, and Dobroliubov. He was a passionate, fighting essayist and an original thinker who played a role of the very highest order in providing a rationale for, and upholding, materialism and revolutionary ideas for the transformation of society. Pisarev ruled the minds of the young generation of his day: he was their recognized authority and preceptor in the realm of ideas. At the same time he possessed the gift of being a talented writer who mastered to perfection the great and beautiful language of his people
