Abstract

This paper explores Schelling’s influence on the birth of psychiatry in Germany. To do this, two arguments are presented. The first ex‐amines the intellectual development of Reil, a physician who coined the term› psychiatry‹(Psychiatrie in German). Behind his proposal, there is a Schellingian intellectual heritage. The second argument re‐veals the significant influence of Schelling on two of the best-known psychiatrists of his time in Germany: Haindorf and Heinroth.
