The Understanding of Man as the "Image of God" in Thomas Aquinas's Theology and Philosophy

Abstract

St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Theology and Philosophy from the background of the understanding and interpretation of the "people" first, "Portrait of God", because people have a "rational / intellectual nature," so the portrait is the soul, whether man or woman has Tianyu the portrait. Second, St. Thomas Aquinas in the "people" on this issue, beyond the Greek philosophical tradition provides two options - Plato and Aristotle, that "man is a combination of soul and body by the composite entity." So, "one body and soul," Therefore, people maintain their unity, while the soul is immortal. St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic people of God in the philosophy of science which has been very successful in the interpretation of far-reaching impact on future generations. With the background of Catholic theology and philosophy, Thomas Aquinas understood "Man" as the "Image of God" in the first place. Since Man had the "intellectual nature" and the image was in the mind, both men and women possessed the image of God. Secondly, regarding the question of "Man," Aquinas transcended the two options provided by the tradition of Greek philosophy-Plato and Aristotle-declaring "Man is a compound substance composed of soul and body." Therefore, due to the " body and soul together in one, "Man gets to maintain his unity, while his soul is immortal. Thence, the Catholic doctrine of Man is fully interpreted by Aquinas's philosophy and exerting tremendous impact on the future generations
