A Probe Into Social Sex

Abstract

For contemporary Chinese women's studies scholars, the concept of gender in the late 1980s, the "Western Learning" in, with the "new feminism" with access to research vision. Gender Concepts in up to four to substance: 1. Gender as a cultural element, used to refer to the formation of social and cultural understanding of gender differences, and gender group identity and behavior. 2. As a system of gender relations, gender and cultural emphasis on the linkages between the elements. 3. Gender as a category of analysis, from a gender perspective for discovery of cultural ideology, Analysis and interpretation tools. 4. Gender as a field of study, both a subject can not be any other alternative theory of meaning, while the traditional humanities disciplines with interdependent links. For contemporary Chinese feminist scholars, the concept social sex has been coming into research perspective together with "new feminism" in late 1980s. A probe into the concept may reveal its four divisions: firstly, social sex as a cultural element refers to both the understanding of sex difference between male and female, and their different behaviors; secondly, as a solicitude system, it emphases the inter-relationship between sex cultural elements; thirdly, as an analytic category, it is a tool to discover and interpret the cultural ideology from a sexual conscience; finally; as a research field, while it has its own theory unsubstitutable by any other discipline, it also closely relates to traditional humanities
