Abstract

Al eeuwenlang wordt er gediscussieerd over de relatie tussen de inhoud en de vorm van een kunstwerk. Schrijver en pianist Charles Rosen bespreekt verschillende grote muzikale werken, van Mozarts Don Giovanni tot Beethovens Negende Symfonie, waarin de vorm de idee schijnbaar ondermijnt: de muziek lijkt iets anders te suggereren dan wat de tekst of de handeling zegt. In al deze gevallen gebruikten de componisten de vrijheid die de muzikale vorm hen gaf om uitdrukking te geven aan een verlangen naar politieke vrijheid — juist wanneer het te riskant was om dat verlangen expliciet in tekst of handeling weer te geven. Een martiale of triomfantelijke muzikale vorm kon zo, onafhankelijk van een veel onschuldiger tekst, de componist de vrijheid geven om de vrijheid te bezingen.
