Abstract

The concurrent publication of The History of Rhetoric and the Rhetoric of History—a collection of essays published over the span of three decades (1980–2005)—and Rhetoric, Modality, Modernity makes available and defines Nancy Struever’s ongoing revision of the history of rhetoric and pioneering understanding of rhetoric as a mode of inquiry. In Struever’s own idiom, the all-inclusive “thickness” of rhetorical inquiry—as opposed to the discriminating “thinness” of philosophy—requires some concern for a thinker’s intellectual career.
