Abstract

The subject of free speech is once again in the forefront of culture and politics in both academia and the public at large, as commentators struggle to disentangle issues related to the First Amendment of the US Constitution, which prohibits the government from abridging the freedom of speech of citizens and those involving private organizations and institutions. These issues have been tested many times over the past century related to the teaching of evolution and creationism and the outcome of prominent court cases illuminate how we might think about free speech issues today.
