Indigenous Knowledge (IK) has a direct impact on biodiversity and vice versa. Since a rich biodiversity facilitates breeding of IK, most of the IK comes from environment and biodiversity. Customary practices play an important role in conserving and protecting the biodiversity, thereby providing an indirect protection to IK. Customary laws can be of great help and advantage in order to recognize and continue these practices. Therefore it becomes almost essential to strengthen the body of customary laws. The paper looks at the place (or lack of it) that customary law currently enjoys in the Indian legal system.
