Democracy, Partisanship, and the Meliorative Value of Sympathy in John Dewey's Philosophy of Communication

Abstract

American democracy, while no stranger to internal conflict, has seemingly reached a boiling point regarding political partisanship. Things have gotten so bad that parties rarely talk to each other on important issues, and shutting down the government over ideological disagreements has become a more or less accepted move.
