Abstract
In 2016, National Football League quarterback Colin Kaepernick made headlines for refusing to stand during the playing of the national anthem prior to his games. He explained in an interview that his act was a protest against pervasive police violence against black people in the United States: "To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder".
