Abstract
Freedom is incompatible with necessity, say philosophers. But it is also incompatible with chance. For neither about necessity nor about chance can you do anything. Your deliberate actions are based on what you want to do. But what you want to do does not ultimately depend on you but on necessity or blind chance. You can do as you please, but you cannot please as you please. Thus, you are not free and no one can blame you, unless he wants to improve you.
