Social Relief Provided by Gentry in the Middle and Last Years of the Qing Dynasty: A Case Study of Fengyu Yizhuang in Suzhou

Abstract

Different from the ordinary meaning of the clan cemetery, the cemetery is in Suzhou Feng Yu Huan family donated the gentry, neighborhood-oriented comprehensive social relief agencies. Squire as a basis, trying to Ping Tiao, relief and promotion of agricultural production technologies and other means to maintain local social order and its traditional long-term interests. Its founder, both of the times, but also with the squire and his family's personal moral values ​​and social and political status are closely related; reflected in the late Qing Jiangnan society for relief from the casual to the systematic development of a relief effort. Squire's behavior is not just a relief we charity, or a more moral than the violence of social cohesion and sustainable means of control
