  • Against compassion: in defence of a “hybrid” concept of empathy.Alastair Morgan - 2017 - Nursing Philosophy 18 (3):e12148.
In this article, I argue that the recent emphasis on compassion in healthcare practice lacks conceptual richness and clarity. In particular, I argue that it would be helpful to focus on a larger concept of empathy rather than compassion alone and that compassion should be thought of as a component of this larger concept of empathy. The first part of the article outlines a critique of the current discourse of compassion on three grounds. This discourse naturalizes, individualizes, and reifies compassion (...)

  • Medicine and paradigms of embodiment.Drew Leder - 1984 - Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 9 (1):29-44.
This paper suggests that the paradigm of the lived-body developed by Straus, Merleau-Ponty and others has important implications for medical practice and theory. Certain recognized flaws in modern medicine, such as its reductionist tendencies and lack of emphasis on preventive measures are shown to be related to the exclusive use of a Cartesian notion of embodiment. Increased attention to the paradigm of the lived-body emphasizing its unity, purposiveness and "enworldment" could help to beneficially reorient practice. Moreover, this portrayal of the (...)

  • The Practice of Phenomenological Empathy Training.Magnus Englander - 2019 - Journal of Phenomenological Psychology 50 (1):42-59.
This article provides concrete examples of a phenomenological approach to empathy training, which is a pedagogical method designed for higher education. First, the phenomenology of empathy and empathy training is briefly described. Second, excerpts from training sessions in higher education are provided as examples. The examples are meant as to concretize the purpose of the training in relation to the overall pedagogical process. In addition, some clarifications are made about how a phenomenological approach can facilitate university students’ deeper understanding of (...)

  • Empathy Training from a Phenomenological Perspective.Magnus Englander - 2014 - Journal of Phenomenological Psychology 45 (1):5-26.
The purpose of this article is to outline a phenomenological approach to empathy training developed over the past ten years in the context of higher education. The theoretical justification for this empathy training is founded in the phenomenological philosophical interpretation of the phenomenon of empathy, whereas the application of empathy as a skill is theoretically based upon entering the phenomenological attitude. The phenomenon of empathy is described as a unique intentionality as part of the self-other relation and contrasted to mainstreams (...)
