David Hume's Enquiry concerning Human Understanding is the definitive statement of the greatest philosopher in the English language. His arguments in support of reasoning from experience, and against the "sophistry and illusion"of religiously inspired philosophical fantasies, caused controversy in the eighteenth century and are strikingly relevant today, when faith and science continue to clash. The Enquiry considers the origin and processes of human thought, reaching the stark conclusion that we can have no ultimate understanding of the physical world, or indeed (...) our own minds. In either sphere we must depend on instinctive learning from experience, recognizing our animal nature and the limits of reason. Hume's calm and open-minded skepticism thus aims to provide a new basis for science, liberating us from the "superstition" of false metaphysics and religion. Sie eignet sich daher als Einführung in Kants Ethik, enthält aber zugleich als Grundlegung alle wesentlichen Gedanken seiner praktischen Philosophie. Auf der Grundlage der Originalausgabe von 1785/86 wurde der Text völlig neu erstellt. This paper explores what insights can be drawn from critical theory to enrich and strengthen Sen’s capability approach in relation to technology and human development. The two theories share some important commonalities: both are concerned with the pursuit of “a good life”; both are normative theories rooted in ethics and meant to make a difference, and both are interested in democracy. The paper provides a brief overview of both schools of thought and their applications to technology and human development. Three (...) areas are identified where critical theory can make a contribution to the capability approach: conceptually, by providing a critical account of individual agency and enriching the concept of technology beyond the simplistic notion of commodities; methodologically, by sensitising towards reification and hegemony of scientific tools, and, finally, by emphasising reflexivity of researchers. This paper explores the sense in which modern societies can be said to be rational. Social rationality cannot be understood on the model of an idealized image of scientific method. Neither science nor society conforms to this image. Nevertheless, critique is routinely silenced by neo-liberal and technocratic arguments that appeal to social simulacra of science. This paper develops a critical strategy for addressing the resistance of rationality to rational critique. Romantic rejection of reason has proven less effective than strategies that (...) conceptualize modern artefacts, systems, and organizations as rationally underdetermined. This approach first appears in Marx's analysis of capitalist economics. Although he lacks the concept of underdetermination, Marx gets around the silencing effect of social rationality with something very much like it in his discussion of the length of the working day. Frankfurt School Critical Theory later blended romantic elements with Marxian ones in a suggestive but ambiguous mixture. The concept of underdetermination reappears in contemporary science and technology studies, now clearly articulated and philosophically and sociologically elaborated. But somewhere along the way the critical thrust was diluted. Critical theory of technology attempts to recover that thrust. Here its approach is generalized to cover the three main forms of social rationality. (shrink)

This essay presents a theory of the role of technology in the distribution and exercise of social power. The paper studies how technical artefacts and systems are used to construct, maintain or strengthen power relations between agents, whether individuals or groups, and how their introduction and use in society differentially empowers and disempowers agents. The theory is developed in three steps. First, a definition of power is proposed, based on a careful discussion of opposing definitions of power, and it is (...) argued that a theory of power should have two components: a theory of power relations and a theory of empowerment. Second, an analysis of power relations is presented, in which five basic types of power relations between agents are distinguished, and this analysis is applied to technology, resulting in an account of the possible roles of technical artefacts in power relations. Third, I analyse how technology can lead to or contribute to empowerment and disempowerment, and what resistance strategies are possible against disempowerment through technological means. The theory of technology and power presented in this paper is claimed to be an essential ingredient of a critical theory of technology, which is a theory that analyses and critiques the role of technology in the distribution and exercise of power in society. In the final section of this paper, it is argued that the theoretical analysis of power and technology presented in this paper provides an adequate basis for the further development of such a critical theory of technology. I study how it may, specifically, be used to develop strategies for the democratization of technology. (shrink)

In der "Kritik der praktischen Vernunft" (1787) begründet Kant seinen wohl bekanntesten Lehrsatz, den Kategorischen Imperativ: "Handle so, daß die Maxime deines Willens jederzeit zugleich als Prinzip einer allgemeinen Gesetzgebung gelten könne". Das Bewußtsein dieses Grundgesetzes der praktischen Vernunft ist nach Kant ein "Faktum der reinen Vernunft", dem sich niemand verschließen kann, und in diesem Faktum sieht er den - nicht weiter herleitbaren und keiner weiteren Herleitung bedürftigen - Beweisgrund der Wirklichkeit unserer Freiheit, den die "Kritik der reinen Vernunft" auf (...) dem Felde der theoretischen Vernunft zwar fordern, aber nicht beibringen konnte. Neben den Schriften David Humes, der sich um eine empirische Begründung allgemeingültiger ethischer Grundsätze bemühte, gilt Kants Ansatz eines rein rational begründeten für jedermann verbindlichen Moralgesetzes bis auf den heutigen Tag als ein starkes und maßgebliches Argument für die Grundlegung einer rationalen Kriterien genügenden und daher allgemein verbindlichen Ethik. Diese Neuausgabe des Textes hält sich strikt an die Fassung der ersten Ausgabe von 1787, d.h. Lautstand, Diktion und die - typisch Kantische - Interpunktion des Originals werden auch dort bewahrt, wo sie heutigen Regeln nicht mehr entsprechen. Lediglich veraltete orthographische Schreibungen und offensichtliche Fehler in der Interpunktion wurden korrigiert, da sie die Lesbarkeit des Textes unnötig erschweren. Lesarten und Korrekturvorschläge späterer Ausgaben sowie die Eintragungen in Kants Handexemplar wurden berücksichtigt oder angemerkt, soweit sie nach dem Stand der neueren Kantforschung noch Beachtung verdienen, und im kritischen Apparat ausgewiesen. Die Einleitung gibt Auskunft über die Entstehung und die Verortung der Schrift in Kants Gesamtwerk und ihre Rezeption, Sachanmerkungen, Register und eine ausführliche Bibliographie geben weitere Hilfen zur Erschließung der Bedeutung des Werkes. With globalization, environmental problems and significant failures in corporate governance, business ethics is perceived to be of increasing importance. This is particularly so for IS because of the huge social effects of new technologies. Yet there has been relatively little discussion of ethics in the IS literature and no clear consensus has emerged. This paper argues that Habermas’s discourse ethics can make a major, and practical, contribution. After outlining some major ethical theories and how they have been interpreted in business (...) ethics and IS, the paper details the development of discourse ethics. Discourse ethics is different from other approaches to ethics as it is grounded in actual debates between those affected by decisions and proposals. Recognizing that the theory is rather abstract, the final section discusses how it can be pragmatized, with the help of existing soft and critical methodologies, to become a basis for business and IS ethics.
