Interactional Expertise and Embodiment.Evan Selinger, Hubert Dreyfus & Harry Collins - 2007 - Studies in History and Philosophy of Science Part A 38 (4):722-740.
In this four part exchange, Evan Selinger starts by stating that Collins’s empirical evidence in respect of linguistic socialization and its bearing on artificial intelligence and expertise is valuable; it advances philosophical and sociological understanding of the relationship between knowledge and language. Nevertheless, he argues that Collins mischaracterizes the data under review and thereby misrepresents how knowledge is acquired and understates the extent to which expert knowers are embodied. Selinger reconstructs the case for the importance of the body in the (...)

Collins’s Incorrect Depiction of Dreyfus’s Critique of Artificial Intelligence.Evan Selinger - 2008 - Phenomenology and the Cognitive Sciences 7 (2):301-308.
Harry Collins interprets Hubert Dreyfus’s philosophy of embodiment as a criticism of all possible forms of artificial intelligence. I argue that this characterization is inaccurate and predicated upon a misunderstanding of the relevance of phenomenology for empirical scientific research.

    Response to Selinger on Dreyfus.Harry M. Collins - 2008 - Phenomenology and the Cognitive Sciences 7 (2):309-311.
My claim is clear and unambiguous: no machine will pass a well-designed Turing Test unless we find some means of embedding it in lived social life. We have no idea how to do this but my argument, and all our evidence, suggests that it will not be a necessary condition that the machine have more than a minimal body. Exactly how minimal is still being worked out.

Hubert L. Dreyfus’s Critique of Classical AI and its Rationalist Assumptions.Setargew Kenaw - 2008 - Minds and Machines 18 (2):227-238.
This paper deals with the rationalist assumptions behind researches of artificial intelligence (AI) on the basis of Hubert Dreyfus’s critique. Dreyfus is a leading American philosopher known for his rigorous critique on the underlying assumptions of the field of artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence specialists, especially those whose view is commonly dubbed as “classical AI,” assume that creating a thinking machine like the human brain is not a too far away project because they believe that human intelligence works on the (...)

Heidegger, Authenticity, and Modernity: Essays in Honor of Hubert L. Dreyfus.Mark Wrathall & Jeff Malpas (eds.) - 2000 - MIT Press.
For more than a quarter of a century, Hubert L. Dreyfus has been the leading voice in American philosophy for the continuing relevance of phenomenology, particularly as developed by Edmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. Dreyfus has influenced a generation of students and a wide range of colleagues, and these volumes are an excellent representation of the extent and depth of that influence. In keeping with Dreyfus's openness to others' ideas, many of the essays in this volume take the (...)

Retrieving Realism Ed. By Hubert Dreyfus and Charles Taylor. [REVIEW]Andrew Grosso - 2019 - American Journal of Theology and Philosophy 39 (3):95-98.
Hubert Dreyfus and Charles Taylor have produced a thorough, careful, and concise account of cognition and articulation that simultaneously provides ample justification for renewed confidence in our capacity to understand reality, engages many of the central concerns of both analytic and phenomenological philosophy, and helps reconnect the philosophical enterprise to wider social and cultural concerns. The book opens with an exposition of the "mediational" worldview that "influences all our theorizing" about thought and language, a worldview that suggests "we grasp external (...)

Retrieving Realism, by Hubert Dreyfus & Charles Taylor. [REVIEW]Taylor Carman - forthcoming - Mind:fzx032.
© Mind Association 2017No two scholars have done more in the past half a century to bring contemporary European thought into dialogue with Anglo-American philosophy than Charles Taylor and the late Hubert Dreyfus. For years they planned to write a book together, defending their shared commitment to realism, and in 2015 the project came to fruition in this accessible, but also rich and stimulating volume. As philosophers know all too well, there are about as many realisms as there are realists. (...)

Hubert Dreyfus and the Last Myth of the Mental.Timothy J. Nulty - 2014 - Croatian Journal of Philosophy 14 (1):49-64.
This paper critically evaluates the arguments advanced by Hubert Dreyfus in his debate with John McDowell regarding the nature of skilled coping. The paper argues that there are significant methodological shortcomings in Dreyfus’ position. The paper examines these methodological limitations and attempts to clarify the problems by re-framing the issues in terms of intentionality, and the specific intentional structures that may or may not be present in skilled coping. The paper attempts to show that the difficulties facing Dreyfus arise (...)

    Defending Dreyfus Against the ‘Expert in X’.Martin Capstick - 2017 - Topoi 36 (2):343-353.
Since its introduction, Hubert Dreyfus’ account of expertise has been a topic of debate and continues to be. This article focuses on one particular critique: Selinger and Crease :245–279, 2002) argument that Dreyfus wrongfully denies expertise to those whose expertise is a matter of propositional knowledge, which they call an ‘expert in x’. This article sets out to defend Dreyfus against the ‘expert in x’ by showing that Selinger and Crease’s use of Gilbert Ryle’s distinction between know-how and know-that (...)

Hubert Dreyfus, the Artificial and the Perspective of a Doubled Philosophy.Massimo Negrotti - forthcoming - AI and Society:1-7.
The contribution by Hubert L. Dreyfus to the debate on the feasibility of AI projects has been surely of great relevance because of his pointing out specific limits of the machine as compared to the human mind. His critics, along with the actual difficulties encountered in the advance of a pure symbolic AI, induced a wide discussion that in some measure stimulated other ways to follow for reproducing human abilities. Nevertheless, a curious fact characterizes the history of AI regarding (...)

Heidegger, Coping, and Cognitive Science: Essays in Honor of Hubert L. Dreyfus.Mark Wrathall & Jeff Malpas (eds.) - 2000 - MIT Press.
Hubert L. Dreyfus's engagement with other thinkers has always been driven by his desire to understand certain basic questions about ourselves and our world. The philosophers on whom his teaching and research have focused are those whose work seems to him to make a difference to the world. The essays in this volume reflect this desire to "make a difference"--not just in the world of academic philosophy, but in the broader world.Dreyfus has helped to create a culture of reflection--of (...)

This is a collection of articles clarifying the nature of Husserlian phenomenology. Dreyfus argues that, given that Husserl put intentionality at the centre of cognitive investigation and painstakingly analyzed it and related concepts in logic, linguistics and psychology he is the father of current research in cognitive science and artificial intelligence. The authors include Follesdal, Fodor, Mohanty and Searle among others.

This paper tries to make clear what practical intelligibility is and how it is threatened at times of cultural breakdown or devastation. It argues that it is easy to overlook a breakdown in practical intelligibility because there is a tendency to frame the problems in terms of theoretical reason. Once one gets clear on what the threat to intelligibility is (and what it is not) one can see fairly straightforward ways to respond to the comments made by Dreyfus and Sherman.

All Things Shining: Reading the Western Classics to Find Meaning in a Secular World by Hubert Dreyfus and Sean Dorrance Kelly (Review).Walter Gulick - 2013 - American Journal of Theology and Philosophy 34 (1):74-78.
Rarely have I encountered a book like All Things Shining. It bravely engages issues that are truly significant for our time, yet flaws run through it like faults in the California landscape. The book has spawned contentious critique unusual for a work by contemporary philosophers. Before I offer my own critical analysis, it is fitting first to appreciate what Dreyfus and Kelly attempt to achieve. The foremost contemporary problems the authors combat are what they term "the burden of choice" and a (...)

Comments on Hubert L. Dreyfus €œIntelligence Without Representation”.Lynne Rudder Baker - 2002 - Phenomenology and the Cognitive Sciences 1 (4):411-412.
My main reaction to “Intelligence without representation” is to applaud. Dreyfus’s use of Merleau-Ponty is a refreshing new breeze in philosophy of psychology. About twenty or so years ago, philosophers struck an unfortunate course dictated by a pair of dubious assumptions: (1) that ordinary psychological attributions were at risk unless vindicated by some science; and (2) that the only possible scientific vindication required that intentional content be represented in the brain. Thus did representationalism become, in Jerry Fodor’s memorable phrase, “the (...)
