Conminado por su deseo apetitivo de mirar unos cadáveres en descomposición, Leoncio no puede resistir y, encolerizado, cede a la tentación (República 439e-440a). El episodio pretende mostrar que la impulsividad y el apetito constituyen dos partes distintas del alma. La pregunta es: si no hay intervención de la racionalidad, ¿según qué parámetro el thymós considera que mirar los cadáveres es algo que no se debe hacer? Si, como creen algunos especialistas, el thymós actúa según un marco axiológico aportado por lo (...) logistikón, entonces Leoncio sería un incontinente. En el presente artículo intentaremos mostrar, apelando a diversos pasajes de los libros VIII y IX de la República, que Leoncio no es un incontinente, sino que la parte impulsiva del alma no se opone al apetito según parámetros vinculados con la racionalidad, sino propios. Forced by his appetitive desire to look at some corpses, Leontius can not resist and, furiously, yields to the temptation and looks at them (Republic 439e-440a). The episode tries to show that the spirited and the appetitive are two different parts of the soul. If there is no intervention of rationality, the question is: according to which parameter the thymós considers that looking at the corpses is something that must not be done? If, like some scholars believe, thymós is guided by values given by the logistikón, then Leontius would be an incontinent agent. In this paper we shall try to show that, according to several passages of books VIII and IX of the Republic, Leontius is not an incontinent agent since the spirited part of his soul challenges the appetitive part not because of rational principles but because the values it defends on itself. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Platon’un ruh (psykhē) anlayışına konuyla ilgili metinleri çerçevesinde bir çözümleme sunmaktır. Bu doğrultuda, öncelikle Platon’un ruh anlayışını evren tasavvurunun içine örgülediği vurgulanacak, bu nedenle doğrudan doğruya bu meselenin işlendiği Timaios diyaloğu ele alınıp orada tartışılan “cismani evrenin yaratılışı,” “evrenin ruhunun (psykhē pantos) teşkili” ve “evrenin ruhunun mayasından diğer ruhların yaratılışı” gibi konular irdelenecek, ayrıca bu süreçte zanaatkâr bir tanrı olarak Dēmiourgos ve diğer tanrıların üstlendiği rol üzerinde durulacaktır. Ardından Dēmiourgos’un evrenin ruhundan arta kalanlarla yarattığı ölümsüz ruha karşılık, (...) diğer tanrıların eliyle şekillenen ölümlü ruhun mahiyeti incelenecektir. Bu bağlamda ölümsüz ruh ile ölümlü ruh veya beden arasındaki ilişki tartışmaya açılarak ruhun “akıl” (to logistikon), “heyecan” (to thymoeides) ve “iştah” (to epithymētikon) şeklinde adlandırılan bölümleri veya işlevleri açıklanacaktır. Ruhun bedenlenip cismani evrene inişi ve bu bedenlenme sürecinde söz konusu temel işlevlerinin bedenin hangi bölgelerinde konumlandırıldığı, yine Timaios diyaloğu ışığında gösterilmeye çalışılacaktır. Daha sonra ruhun üç bölümlü veya üç işlevli yapısı, Phaidros diyaloğunda işlenen “kanatlı at” mitosuyla örneklendirilecek, bu sayede ruhun bedenlenme sürecine ve bedenlenmeden önceki semavi yaşayışına, başka deyişle göğün üstünde bir mekânda (hyperouranion topon) yer alan idea’lar âlemini temaşa etme (theōria) anına ışık tutulacaktır. Böylelikle hem Timaios hem de Phaidros diyaloglarında yer alan anlatımlar birbiriyle ilişkilendirilerek Platon’un ruh anlayışı açıklığa kavuşturulacak; sonuç olarak Platon’a göre ruhun hakiki âlem ile bu dünya arasındaki bağlantıyı tesis edebilme imkânına sahip bir varlık olduğu, bu nedenle onun varlık ve bilgi anlayışının düğüm noktasını oluşturduğu ortaya konmaya çalışılacaktır. Em breve “diálogo” com dois textos do Prof. John Cooper, este artigo trata um aspecto particular da relação entre os tratamentos da “alma”, principalmente, no Livro IV da República de Platão; e por Aristóteles no De anima, na Retórica e nos tratados éticos. Para Platão, a alma humana representa a combinação de três elementos, partes ou fatores - logistikon, thumoeides, epithumêtikon -, comparáveis a um homem, um leão e um monstro e respectivamente associados a ações causadas pela razão, pelo (...) “thumos” ou por nossos apetites. A tripartição é uma ideia dominante pelo menos em contextos relacionados à psicologia moral e à explicação da ação nos diálogos platônicos a partir da República. Não há grande interesse de Aristóteles pelas “partes” da alma, mas pelo menos no contexto ético há alguma tendência a dividir a alma, se bem que apenas por analogia, e divide frequentemente o desejo em três subtipos - boulêsis, thumos e epithumia. Contudo, naqueles textos aristotélicos que se preocupam mais diretamente com a psicologia moral, isto é, os tratados éticos e a Retórica, o que realmente mais chama a atenção é, acima de tudo, a ausência da tripartição da alma. Para Aristóteles, não há muita utilidade para qualquer ideia de “partes” da alma no sentido platônico. (shrink)

The paper aims to present the proprium dialogicum of the café philo. In theoretical terms, the philosophical dialogue in the café philo can be recognized as discursive rationality and play of the faculties ruled by the logistikon, as an exercise of critical thinking, as an endless quest of meaning, and finally as a way of life. All those theoretical acquisitions are tested by the comparison with results from one year of praxis of café philo, part of the Diderot Project (...) supported by the Fondazione CRT of Torino, conducted with more than 2.000 high-school students of Piedmont. The evidence linking the rational part of the soul (the logistikon) to each of these aspects is discussed. The philosopher-guardians are shown to exemplify full and complete “Platonic rationality”, whereas the unjust men in (...) books 8 and 9 exhibit different degrees of failure to conform to the six elements listed above. At the beginning of Posterior Analytics 2.19 Aristotle reminds us that we cannot claim demonstrative knowledge ( epistêmê apodeiktikê ) unless we know immediate premisses, the archai of demonstrations. By the end of the chapter he explains why the cognitive state whereby we get to know archai must be Nous . In between, however, Aristotle describes the process of the acquisition of concepts, not immediate premisses. How should we understand this? There is a general agreement that it is Nous by (...) means of which we acquire both premisses and concepts. I argue that this cannot be the case. Since concepts are simples while premisses are composites (predications of concepts), the two cannot be objects of the same cognitive state. I further argue that, whereas Nous is responsible for our grasp of concepts, the state Aristotle elsewhere calls non-demonstrable knowledge is the one whereby we get to know the premisses of demonstrations. Buku yang ditulis oleh Dr. A. Setyo-Wibowo (SW) dan Haryanto Cahyadi, M. Hum. (HC), dua-duanya dosen filsafat, yang satu di Jakarta, yang satu di Jayapura, ini betul-betul memperkaya pustaka tentang filsafat dalam bahasa Indonesia. Platon tetap salah satu filosof terbesar, kalau bukan filosof terbesar segala zaman. Dalam buku ini para penulis mengantar pembaca ke jantung filsafat Platon. Mereka melakukannya dengan membawa pembaca ke dalam teks-teks kunci Platon. Yang mereka angkat adalah pemikiran Platon tentang pendidikan. Pendidikan bukan salah satu bidang pemikiran (...) Platon, melainkan intinya. Seluruh filsafat Platon, seperti setiap filsafat sejati, akhirnya hanya punya satu tujuan: ia mau mencerahkan. Ya mencerahkan kita. Menunjukkan ke mana kita harus mengarahkan dan mengembangkan kita agar kita menjadi manusia yang mutu. Buku ini membuat kita betul-betul mengerti Platon, tidak hanya seperti dalam buku-buku “ringkasan sejarah filsafat”, melainkan secara mendalam. Namun buku SW dan HC ini mempunyai nilai lebih. Mereka tidak hanya membawa kita ke Platon, melainkan mengangkat aktualitas pemikirannya. Platon mau mendidik pemimpin negara. Ia tidak berfilsafat dalam udara kosong, melainkan pada zaman di mana demokrasi Athena sudah kacau balau karena disandera oleh elit-elit korup. Dalam situasi ini Platon mengembangkan konsepsinya tentang suatu pendidikan yang bisa melahirkan pemimpin negara yang baik. SW dan HC menunjukkan bahwa pemikiran Platon 2500 tahun lalu sekarang di Indonesia pun masih pantas diperhatikan. Buku ini bukan bacaan gampang. Uraiannya tidak secara esai omongan ringan, melainkan betul-betul ngilmu, memakai metode-metode analisa filosofis, mengutip dari teks-teks Platon sendiri, dengan mengacu pada pustaka para ahli Platon yang state of the art. Bahasa pun tidak menggampangkan. Untuk tetap rapat dengan teks, mereka suka memakai kata-kata kunci dalam bahasa Yunani. Ambil misalnya judul ini: "Paideia Kaum Sofis: Penciutan Aisthesis-Arete dan Dominasi 'Empeiria'". Pembaca mana langsung akan tahu apa kiranya akan dibahas. Pembaca barangkali sering harus mencari dalam daftar istilah (yang, sayang, tidak lengkap) apa arti suatu kata, misalnya logistikon atau Iliados, kemudian lupa lagi, cari lagi dst. Tetapi bagi pembaca yang bertahan ganjarannya besar. Ia akan masuk ke dalam pemikiran Platon yang asli, rinci, sangat menarik...................... Masih satu catatan tentang cita-cita manusia yang kaloskagathos, elok nan baik. Membaca uraian bagus para penulis saya terdorong untuk bertanya apakah bukan sudah waktunya cita-cita Yunani kuno yang dalam etika kontemporer sama sekali hilang itu perlu diangkat kembali. Paham manusia mutu sebagai manusia elok nan baik berhasil melepaskan etika dari moralisme sempit (searah dengan MacIntyre – After Virtue – yang mengangkat kembali paham "keutamaan" Yunani yang kuat dan utuh terhadap paham mandul-moralistik istilah "keutamaan" dalam budaya Barat). Begitu pula etika Jawa memahami kebaikan manusia yang mantap dan utuh dalam keterkaitan antara kebaikan etis dan kebaikan estetik. - Catatan kecil: Dalam indeks seharusnya tidak dimuat nama yang terdapat dalam daftar pustaka. Buku Setyo Wibowo dan Haryanto Cahyadi ini bukan hanya pandu kompeten ke jantung filsafat Platon, melainkan memberikan rangsangan-rangsangan baru untuk pemikiran filosofis.
