This volume is devoted to exploring a subject which, on the surface, might appear to be just a trending topic. In fact, it is much more than a trend. It relates to an ancient, permanent issue which directly connects with people's life and basic needs: the recognition and protection of individuals' dignity, in particular the inherent worthiness of the most vulnerable human beings. The content of this book is described well enough by its title: 'Human Dignity of the Vulnerable in (...) the Age of Rights'. Certainly, we do not claim that only the human dignity of vulnerable people should be recognized and protected. We rather argue that, since vulnerability is part of the human condition, human vulnerability is not at odds with human dignity. To put it simply, human dignity is compatible with vulnerability. A concept of human dignity which discards or denies the dignity of the vulnerable and weak is at odds with the real human condition. Even those individuals who might seem more skilled and talented are fragile, vulnerable and limited. We need to realize that human condition is not limitless. It is crucial to re-discover a sense of moderation regarding ourselves, a sense of reality concerning our own nature. Some lines of thought take the opposite view. It is sometimes argued that humankind is - or is called to be - powerful, and that the time will come when there will be no vulnerability, no fragility, no limits at all. Human beings will become like God (or what believers might think God to be). This perspective rejects human vulnerability as in intrinsic evil. Those who are frail or weak, who are not autonomous or not able to care for themselves, do not possess dignity. In this volume it is claimed that vulnerability is an inherent part of human condition, and because human dignity belongs to all individuals, laws are called to recognize and protect the rights of all of them, particularly of those who might appear to be more vulnerable and fragile. Sa gloire projetée tantôt sur l'un, tantôt sur l'autre de ses thèmes -harmonie préétablie, optimisme, monade, etc. - Leibniz n'a jamais donné lieu à une de ces agressivités idéologiques qui lancent une mode dans l'intelligentsia. Moderniste? Non. Moderne? Oui. Aujourd'hui, de plus en plus notre contemporain. Son immense savoir - en progrès sur celui de la Renaissance - semble préfigurer l'Encyclopédie du monde actuel. Ne multiplions pas des exemples. Son algorithme infinitésimal, la dyatique, l'art combinatoire sont à la base de (...) notre Mécanique, de nos ordinateurs et par là, sans doute, d'une notion d'ordre qui a cessé d'être linéaire. Pour formuler ses nouveaux calculs en mathématiques et en logique - raisonner, c'est aussi calculer - et suivre les migrations des peuples au cours de l'histoire, il médite sur le langage. Il l'interprète selon la théorie de l'expression et non plus sur celles des signes. Il nous rapproche de nos préoccupations linguistiques, il déplace l'épistémologie vers la philosophie analytique : presque notre contemporain. En politique et morale, il projetait Société des Nations et Conciles : peut-être son souci de tout concilier l'a-t-il trop limité à une morale de bon sens difficilement compatible avec l'amoralisme de nos grands Etats. La personne comme question est un sujet qui n'a cessé d'alimenter la réflexion de l'auteur, ceci en s'appuyant sur Husserl. De la préhistoire du concept de personne à son épanouissement médiéval puis jusqu'à sa réactivation phénoménologique, la personne est un combat pour le soi. La perspective généalogique adoptée dans ce livre vise à montrer que c'est la genèse du concept biblique de personne qui montre le véritable sens d'être de la personne, alors que le concept juridique en est dérivé. Le philosophe, que caractérise selon Nietzsche la vertu d’indépendance, se trouve par là condamné à la solitude. Celle-ci toutefois ne doit pas être conçue de manière négative, comme un simple retrait hors du monde, ou comme un refus de toute relation et de toute altérité. L’individu n’est pas une substance, mais un complexe de forces, c’est-à-dire un « corps » qui est non seulement structuré à la manière d ’une communauté, mais aussi par les relations sociales externes dans lesquelles l’individu (...) se trouve d’abord engagé. La solitude ne doit pas en conséquence être confondue avec un simple état d’ isolement . Elle consiste en une épreuve , en un mouvement de conquête de la singularité, contre les valeurs du « troupeau » qui ont été incorporées. Une telle conquête requiert que soient considérés et questionnés les autres hommes et valeurs dans leur diversité. Et elle fait surgir l’exigence d’une communauté qui apparaît comme la condition paradoxale d’une solitude authentique. (shrink)

Recent epistemology of modality has seen a growing trend towards metaphysics-first approaches. Contrastingly, this paper offers a more philosophically modest account of justifying modal claims, focusing on the practices of scientific modal inferences. Two ways of making such inferences are identified and analyzed: actualist-manipulationist modality and relative modality. In AM, what is observed to be or not to be the case in actuality or under manipulations, allows us to make modal inferences. AM-based inferences are fallible, but the same holds for (...) practically all empirical inquiry. In RM, modal inferences are evaluated relative to what is kept fixed in a system, like a theory or a model. RM-based inferences are more certain but framework-dependent. While elements from both AM and RM can be found in some existing accounts of modality, it is worth highlighting them in their own right and isolating their features for closer scrutiny. This helps to establish their relevant epistemologies that are free from some strong philosophical assumptions often attached to them in the literature. We close by showing how combining these two routes amounts to a view that accounts for a rich variety of modal inferences in science. (shrink)

In an excerpt preserved by John Stobaeus in the chapter of the Anthologion entitled Peri tôn eph’hêmin, Porphyry addresses the issue of the origin of evil within the context of a broader investigation of individual autonomy : is it enough to envisage man as a subject with the freedom to act in order to make him responsible for evil and thus to free God of any responsibility with regard to the ills besetting individuals? An answer to this question is provided (...) on the basis of a comparative reading of the Myth of Er and of Homer. The conclusion reached is that evil is not intrinsic to human nature, but rather concerns certain forms of existence which individuals opt for when they disregard the divine and forego rationality. Consequently, God is not responsible for evil.The exegetical and argumentative strategy adopted by Porphyry in order to support this answer suggests that his stance is a polemical one, targeting Stoics in particular. Against Chrysippus’ reading of the same verses from Homer, which leads to a deterministic perspective, or at any rate one likely to prove inconsistent, Porphyry offers an interpretation of Homer as a coherent thinker and a forerunner of Plato : Homer is seen to have proposed a kind of dichotomy between the self-determination and the necessity that characterise the life of the soul, and as having assigned individuals the faculty of choosing between virtue and vice, thus making them ultimately responsible with regard to evil.
