    Don»T Trust Me, I»M a Doctor: Medical Regulation and the 1999 NHS Reforms.A. C. L. Davies - 2000 - Oxford Journal of Legal Studies 20 (3):437-456.
This article examines recent developments in the regulation of the medical profession in England, with particular reference to doctors working in the National Health Service (NHS). It is argued that the Health Act 1999 and associated government policies are bringing about a shift from a «light touch», self-regulatory paradigm to a government-driven, interventionist approach. It is suggested that the reason for the change is not simply a governmental concern with the quality and nature of care provided by doctors, but more (...)

    Descartes, Complément À l'Histoire d'Une Préface Méconnue. [REVIEW]D. C. - 1964 - Review of Metaphysics 17 (4):626-627.
Ehrmann contends that Descartes' 1647 preface to the Meditations, "Le Libraire au Lecteur," was suppressed by design in late 17th century editions, and subsequently by oversight. This is the preface which speaks of the "key to the book, without which no one could understand it." Ehrmann's pamphlet provides a sketchy history of the publication of Descartes' works and argues for the republication, with corrections, of the Adam and Tannery complete edition.--C. D.

    Histoire de la Folie À l'Age Classique. [REVIEW]D. C. - 1963 - Review of Metaphysics 17 (1):144-144.
An exhaustive, exhausting, difficult, and inspired history of the cultural experience of madness, from the late Middle Ages to the early Nineteenth Century. Foucault immerses himself in the actual evidences of the phenomenon of madness: literary and dramatic works, records of governments, hospitals, prisons, and religious institutions, and the expressions of philosophers and sages. The history of madness is the history of the gestures that define it-confinement, punishment, neglect, therapy. Foucault's final statement of the antinomies and the debilitating impoverishment of (...)

    Worlds Apart: A Dialogue of the 1960's. [REVIEW]L. B. C. - 1964 - Review of Metaphysics 17 (4):624-624.
An urbanely written dialogue which convincingly demonstrates the "compartmentalized" character of a number of modern cosmologies. The implications and inconsistencies of biological and physical views of nature, space and time take up the first part of the book; the second turns to an examination of a Steineresque mysticism, a puzzling emphasis since the objections raised to it in the text itself are never satisfactorily answered. Barfield's major polemic point, the need for more communication among intellectual disciplines as they examine their (...)

    The Illusion of the Epoch: Marxism-Leninism as a Philosophical Creed. [REVIEW]L. C. - 1957 - Review of Metaphysics 10 (4):714-714.
Marxism-Leninism, thinks the author, is a "philosophical farrago," a collection of ideas, some false, some trivial, some confused and some inadequately defended. He presents a detailed exposition and criticism of the Marxist theory of knowledge, ontology, ethics, and doctrine of historical materialism. The expository sections are unusually clear and draw upon materials not easily available to English speaking readers. The criticisms are detailed, rigorous, and, even when not convincing, provocative. The chief merit of the book is that the author does (...)

The Triumph of Time: A Study of the Victorian Concepts of Time, History, Progress, and Decadence. [REVIEW]L. B. C. - 1967 - Review of Metaphysics 20 (3):537-538.
Buckley sees the Victorians as obsessed by time, and though the obsession is certainly not unique to the nineteenth century, he attempts to delineate what is distinctively Victorian about it. The growing historical consciousness, the concern with material progress, the perspective afforded by archaeology, theories of cultural progress, decline, or cycles: all these helped form distinctive concepts of time. Buckley subtly traces the attitudes toward "the living present," ranging from an acceptance of the challenge offered by the present to seizing (...)

    A Dialogue Between a Philosopher and a Student of Law of the Common Laws of England. [REVIEW]S. C. A. - 1971 - Review of Metaphysics 25 (2):354-354.
This is a critical edition of the work published in 1681, two years after Hobbes' death. The dialogue contains mature reflections of Hobbes on the doctrine of sovereignty. It deals with the relation between law and reason, sovereign power, crimes, heresies and punishments. The editor's introduction sets forth arguments for regarding the text as a complete work, contrary to the views of L. Stephen, Tönnies, and Robertson. A critical analysis of the argument in the dialogue is also provided indicating the (...)

    'Beyond a Boundary' : Reading C.L.R. James with Bourdieu.A. Smith - 2006 - Theory, Culture and Society 23 (4):95-112.
This article responds to the suggestion that C.L.R. James’ discussion of cricket, and particularly his defence of the ‘spirit of the game’, represent an ideological blind-spot on his part. James’ autobiographical account of the cricketing field, it is argued, is comparable to Pierre Bourdieu’s account of the ‘fields’ of culture more generally. In particular, James recognized that what was at stake in the defence of cricketing ethics was a defence of the principle by which the sport was able to operate (...)

    Of Theory Shifts and Industrial Innovations: The Relations of J. A. C. Chaptal and A. L. Lavoisier.Carleton E. Perrin - 1986 - Annals of Science 43 (6):511-542.
Relations between J. A. C. Chaptal, pioneer of heavy chemical industry in France, and A. L. Lavoisier, reformer of chemical theory, are examined in the light of unpublished correspondence they exchanged in the period 1784–1790. The letters, together with Chaptal's early publications, allow a reconstruction of his conversion to Lavoisier's antiphlogistic chemistry. They also reveal a series of petitions that Chaptal made to Lavoisier, in the latter's official capacity as a director of the Régie des poudres et salpêtres, for relief (...)

Widely regarded as one of the most important and influential sports books of all time, C. L. R. James's _Beyond a Boundary_ is—among other things—a pioneering study of popular culture, an analysis of resistance to empire and racism, and a personal reflection on the history of colonialism and its effects in the Caribbean. More than fifty years after the publication of James's classic text, the contributors to _Marxism, Colonialism, and Cricket_ investigate _Beyond a Boundary_'s production and reception and its implication (...)

Using Philosophy to Improve the Coherence and Interoperability of Applications Ontologies: A Field Report on the Collaboration of IFOMIS and L&C.Jonathan Simon, James Matthew Fielding & Barry Smith - 2004 - In Proceedings of the First Workshop on Philosophy and Informatics. The collaboration of Language and Computing nv (L&C) and the Institute for Formal Ontology and Medical Information Science (IFOMIS) is guided by the hypothesis that quality constraints on ontologies for software ap-plication purposes closely parallel the constraints salient to the design of sound philosophical theories. The extent of this parallel has been poorly appreciated in the informatics community, and it turns out that importing the benefits of phi-losophical insight and methodology into application domains yields a variety of improvements. The article examines the relation that Aquinas' theory of the beatific vision maintains with Averroes' noetics as presented in his Great Commentary on the De anima. Starting with his Commentary on the Sentences, in which the young Thomas Aquinas offers an explicit transposition of the philosophical intellection of separate substances into the Christian theological order, through to his later works where no mention of it is found, we will endeavour to present the exact nature of these borrowings and to evaluate (...)

In addition he has treated aspects of Philip's earlier involvement in Thessalian, Thracian, and Phokian affairs. In the process he has in many instances disagreed with a number of current findings.
