Within a state-space approach endowed with a generalized potential function, mental states can be systematically characterized by their stability against perturbations. This approach yields three major classes of states: (1) asymptotically stable categorial states, (2) marginally stable non-categorial states and (3) unstable acategorial states. The particularly interesting case of states giving rise to exceptional experiences will be elucidated in detail. Their proper classification will be related to Metzinger’s account of self-model and world-model, and empirical support for this classification will be (...) surveyed. Eventually, it will be outlined how Metzinger’s discussion of intentionality achieves pronounced significance within a dual-aspect framework of thinking. (shrink)

Dans un monde aussi chaotique que celui où chacun essaie de trouver sa place en ce début de XXIe siècle, la notion de civilisation peine à s'inscrire dans la réalité et, à plus forte raison, à véhiculer la connotation de progrès. Faut-il pour autant perdre espoir? Après avoir recensé les turpitudes de la société néolibérale mondialisée, l'auteur explore quelques pistes simples vers un monde meilleur, dans lequel, entre autres, la devise de notre République, Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité, trouverait enfin son véritable (...) sens, et chaque vie son rôle à jouer, l'économie et l'argent seraient mis au service de l'homme et non l'inverse, et promues les véritables valeurs humanistes et les anciennes sagesses. The mental system of an individual usually generates a reality-model that includes a self-model and a world-model as fundamental components. Exceptional experiences (ExE) can be classified as subjectively experienced anomalies in the self-model or the world-model or in the relation of both. Empirical studies show significant correlations between specific patterns of ExE and socially and clinically relevant variables. In order to examine the ontological status of anomalous phenomena a psychophysical approach is presented in which the principle of complementarity is of (...) fundamental importance. Applying a generalized quantum theory to psychosocial and psychophysical systems, complementary aspects such as autonomy versus reliability or novelty versus confirmation are identified as possible local and global variables. The findings indicate that entanglement correlations could play a role in the occurrence of ExE and that specific psychological interventions can dissolve them. (shrink)

Der Aufsatz von M. Demangeon stellt den Versuch dar, durch die Herausarbeitung der Eigentümlichkeit der von Vidal de la Blache gegründeten französischen Schule der „Géographie Humaine“ (zu deren Hauptvertretern der Verfasser gehört) der Klärung und Förderung der internationalen Zusammenarbeit zu dienen.Im ersten Teil zeigt der Aufsatz an Beispielen deutscher (...) und amerikanischer Bücher, wie die geographischen Arbeiten in Ziel und Methode auseinandergehen, dann an Beispielen französischer Bücher, wie Arbeiten von Historikern und Nationalökonomen als Einführung in die „Géographie Humaine“ verwandt werden können. Nach Klarstellung der Ungewissheiten versucht der Aufsatz im zweiten Teil, das eigentliche Gebiet der Disziplin zu bestimmen. Als ihre spezifische Aufgabe betrachtet sie die Analyse der sozialen Gruppe in ihrem Verhältnis zum Naturmilieu. Im dritten Teil bringt D. die Methode auf vier Prinzipien : Zwischen Natur und Mensch herrscht kein blinder Determinismus ; unter den Möglichkeiten, die ihm die Natur bietet, wählt der Mensch ; die Georgraphie soll immer die territoriale Grundlage vor Augen haben ; sie soll nicht nur die Gegenwart, sondern auch die Vergangenheit in Betracht ziehen ; endlich soll sie immer ihre Forschungsresultate mit ihrem besten Mittel, der Karte, zum sinnfälligen Ausdruck bringen. Demangeon, is one of the chief representatives of the French school of „Géographie humaine“ which was founded by Vidal de la Blache.The social sciences, their methods and the boundary lines of their subdivisions vary in the different countries with the different national, historical and ideological conditions, and it is the effort of this school to further international cooperation of the social sciences by correlating the specific national differences of their various disciplines with the given geographical conditions of their environment.The first part of the article illustrates in an analysis of German and American geographical books the divergences in aims and methods, and its attempt to show with examples from various French books the value of historical and economic investigations as an introduction to the „Géographie humaine“. The second part describes the chief task of the discipline as an analysis of the social group in relation to its natural milieu. The third part develops the chief principles evolved by the school, namely, that there is no blind determinism in the relationship between nature and man. Man has a choice among the possibilities presented by nature. Geography should translate the relationship between nature and man into terms of the territorial environment, with due regard to its present form, without, however, neglecting its past development. We argue that as historians of science or as historians of knowledge, our discipline disposes of the tools and topics necessary to respond to urgent epistemic and political problems.

In den 'Orolegomena' wird vom Herausgeber der Durchbruch zu einer konsequenten Konzeption der interkulturellen Philosophie dargestellt. D. Tiemersma untersucht, wie Merleau-Ponty durch eine Auseinandersetzung mit kulturanthropologischen Forschungen zu einer Erweiterung des Bewußtseinsbegriffs und der Rationalitätskonzeption gelangt. Die Ansprüche einer interkulturellen Philosophie werden von J. Hoogland von einer Habermas'schen Position aus kritisch überprüft. A.W. Prins interpretiert Heideggers 'Angang der interkulturellen Auseinandersetzung' trotz anders lautenden Äußerungen dieses Autors als einen wichtigen Beitrag zur interkulturellen Philosophie. Für einen Aufweis der inneren Affinität zwischen japanischem (...) Denken und einigen neonietzscheanischen Philosophen bezieht sich H. Oosterling auf Bataille, Barthes, Foucault, Lyotard und Derrida. Aus feministischer Perspektive wendet sich J. van den Oord der Frage der Universalität der Menschenrechte zu. In der Absicht, den Universalitätsanspruch der westlichen Demokratieform zu kritisieren, konfrontiert F. Uyanne afrikanische und westliche Demokratie-Konzeptionen. C. Jacobs beschreibt den interkulturellen Dialog, der in einigen wichtigen Kunstausstellungen in New York und Paris stattgefunden hat. Nachdem E. de Schipper tiefgehende Zweifel am hier beschrittenen Weg zur interkulturellen Philosophie ausgesprochen hat, werden zum Schluß in einer 'Replik' der Herausgebers noch einmal einige Ausgangspunkte des Projekts klargestellt. Als "Wissenschaft des Regierens" und "Kunst der Verwaltung" definiert ein Lexikon aus dem 18. Jahrhundert die Politik, 2000 Jahre früher machte Aristoteles das "glückselige und edle Leben" als Zweck des Staates aus. Ein Blick auf die Rituale der Berliner Republik zeigt, wie weit sich die praktische Politik von diesen Idealen entfernt hat: Es geht weniger um die Glückseligkeit der Bürger als um Parteienproporz und Lobbyinteressen, das zähe Ringen um Reformen hat mit großer Kunst wenig gemeinsam. Wie es trotzdem immer wieder (...) gelingt, die Fiktion einer idealen Politik aufrechtzuerhalten, ist das Thema der Studie von Wolfgang Fach: Charismatische Persönlichkeiten "veredeln" die graue Routine, demokratische Wahlen sollen das politische Tagesgeschäft "reinigen". Beide Seiten gehOren untrennbar zusammen. Wie ihr Verhaltnis im einzel nen verlauft, ist eine offene Frage. Vermutlich folgt es jener "Laffer-Kur ve", die einige Zeit lang in der wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Diskussion eine Rolle spielte: d.h., bis zu einem gewissen Maximum fordern zusatzli che Belastungen die Entfaltung der Personlichkeit; was dariiber hinausgeht, lost regressive Veranderungen aus. HAtte Michel Foucault in Die Ordnung der Dinge die These formuliert, dass die Ahnlichkeit ihre Rolle als strukturierende Form des Wissens im Laufe des siebzehnten Jahrhunderts verloren habe, so geht die vorliegende Untersuchung davon aus, dass das Ahnlichkeitsdenken auch in der Moderne von grundlegender Bedeutung ist. LEitend ist dabei die Annahme, dass die Ahnlichkeit ihre besondere Relevanz nun in einem Diskurs uber asthetische Erfahrung entfaltet, (...) wobei sich von dort aus wiederum fundamentale Fragestellungen der Erkenntnistheorie eroffnen. DEn Ausgangspunkt der Untersuchung bildet die Philosophie Immanuel Kants in ihrer maSSgeblichen Bedeutung fur asthetische Theorien der Moderne. ANhand detaillierter Lekturen von Texten von Walter Benjamin, Paul Valéry und Theodor W. This book argues for the use of nonideal theory in social ontology. The central claim is that a paradigm shift is underway in contemporary social ontology, from ideal to nonideal, and that this shift should be fully followed through. To develop and defend this central claim, the first step is to show that the key questions and central dividing lines within contemporary social ontology can be fruitfully reconstructed as a clash between two worlds, referred to as ideal and nonideal social (...) ontology. Ideal social ontology is characterized by consensus and cooperation, while nonideal social ontology is characterized by conflict and contestation. The second step is to show that, when taken together, objections to the standard model of ideal social ontology (the dominant version of ideal social ontology) imply that this model needs to be given up in favor of nonideal social ontology. In other words, we should look to nonideal rather than ideal social ontology for core concepts. The third step is to offer a positive account, called the power view, of nonideal social ontology. This account places the concept of social power at the core of a general theory of the social world and replaces the flat and narrow conception of power in ideal social ontology with a richer and more extensive conception. In addition, it rectifies a shortcoming in nonideal social ontology by attending to class, which has been notably and oddly overlooked in the literature. (shrink)

Trope theory is a leading metaphysical theory in analytic ontology. One of its classic statements is found in the work of Donald C. Williams who argued that tropes qua abstract particulars are the very alphabet of being. The concept of an abstract particular has been repeatedly attacked in the literature. Opponents and proponents of trope theory alike have levelled their criticisms at the abstractness of tropes and the associated act of abstraction. In this paper I defend the concept of a (...) trope qua abstract particular by rejecting arguments that purport to show that tropes should not be understood as abstract and by arguing that the abstractness of tropes plays an indispensable role in one of our more promising trope-theoretic analyses of universals and of concrete objects. Desde la aparición, en 1927, de su obra central Ser y tiempo, Martin Heidegger ha sido y sigue siendo considerado por amplios sectores de opinión como el filósofo más importante del siglo XX. Frente a esta sobrevaloración del filósofo de los Bosques Negros, Heleno Saña procede, en su documentadísimo libro, a una crítica de la filosofía heideggeriana, intentando demostrar que está basada en una tergiversación e instrumentalización sistemáticas de la terminología y los conceptos esenciales de la filosofía clásica. El resultado (...) final de sus ejercicios hermenéuticos y sus continuos malabarismos lingüísticos, es un irracionalismo de índole claramente nihilista, por su culto implícito y explícito a la muerte. En este sentido es altamente significativo que a la biografía y a la filosofía heideggerianas pertenezcan su adhesión al nacionalsocialismo y la glorificación de Alemania como la “raza de los señores” por excelencia, tema al que Heleno Saña dedica la debida atención. Uno de los signos distintivos de este ensayo es el de la claridad con que expone sus tesis, de manera que el libro no está pensado solo para eruditos, sino para todas las personas interesadas en ampliar sus conocimientos culturales y filosóficos. He aquí un hombre afortunado que no fue indiferente ante el infortunio de tantos y que vio en la humanitas la virtud por excelencia que lleva a una constante atención y cuidado del prójimo. Inspirado por un cambio de actitud en su época, así como por su fe cristiana y la mejor tradición estoica, mostró una robusta preocupación sobre el tema subrayando el valor social que debe tener toda riqueza, tanto a nivel estatal como individual, destacando la grave obligación cívica de los ricos y la necesidad que tienen todos, ricos y pobres, de empeñarse en la práctica de cierto desprendimiento y generosidad si no quieren mermar su propia humanidad y fallecer en su avaricia. La percepción de la miseria había cambiado de tal manera que su remedio ya no podía estar en una u otra limosna en plazas e iglesias, sino en la acción bien pensada y perentoria de todo gobierno que se tenga por justo. Sir Tomás Moro, privilegiado desde la cuna y seguro en su trabajo profesional, vio la pobreza de tantos como un desastre social, pero uno que, al mismo tiempo, debería llevar a todo ser humano a ver en el desprendimiento y generosidad una excelencia o virtud que alumbra la "otra" libertad, y tan íntima y valiosa que en su caso brilló aun en la prisión y ante el horror de una muerte injusta y atroz." -- Page 4 of cover.
