Sex determination in mammals is mediated via the supporting cell lineage in the fetal gonad. In the very early stages of gonadal development, the fate of the supporting cell population is critically dependent on the expression of the male‐determining gene on the Y chromosome. If this gene is absent or fails to be expressed, or is expressed too late or in too small a number of supporting cells, all supporting cells (XX or XY) differentiate as pre‐follicle cells and development proceeds (...) along the female pathway. Supporting cells in which the male‐determining gene is expressed in a timely manner differentiate as pre‐Sertoli cells; given sufficient such cells, testis cords form and development proceeds in a male direction. If XX supporting cells are also present, a few may be recruited into the pre‐Sertoli population and participate in testis cord formation. The subsequent fate of pre‐follicle cells depends critically on interaction with the germ cell population in the developing gonad: absence of germ cells may lead to partial masculinization of the gonad, and/or to disappearance of the supporting cell component. This article documents the main developments in the textual history of a short polemical treatise ascribed to Aḥmad Ibn Ḥanbal, al-Radd ʿalā al-zanādiqa wa-l-jahmiyya. In particular, I show that three different, if related, recensions of the text exist in manuscript. Then, drawing on evidence from the text and biobibliographical sources, I show that al-Radd only emerged over several centuries. The idea for the text finds its roots in the earlist elaborations of Hanbali theology, perhaps even in the notebooks of Ibn (...) Ḥanbal himself. The first recension of the text, however, only emerged after the mid-fourth/tenth century in Baghdad. Another recension appears at the beginning of the sixth/twelfth century, perhaps also in Baghdad. These recensions were combined to form a third recension no later than the eighth/fourteenth century, and it is the third recension that became the basis for most print editions of the work. The article looks again at the English debate over Anglo-Scottish union in the period 1603 to 1607. It reconstructs what marriage meant to contemporaries, as sociocultural practice as well as political model. It argues that Englishmen's attention to their local circumstances -- sui generis since the Henrician reformation -- sank the union project. The debate also promoted a distrust of blood-right kingship that was crucial to its abolition a generation later. The body of the paper is designed as a case (...) study of how to situate 'ideas in context'. It is intended to challenge, by example, key assumptions that inform the dominant model for that project, articulated pre- eminently in Quentin Skinner's work. The conclusion addresses the theoretical dimension explicitly, critiquing Skinner's rationalist model with specific reference to his recent work on conceptions of liberty in seventeenth-century England.
