Artificial devices that functionally replace internal organs are likely to be more common in the future. They are becoming more and more technologically feasible, increases in chronic diseases that can compromise various organs are anticipated, and donor organs will remain necessarily limited. More people in the future may have bodies that are partly nonorganic. How might artificial organs affect how we experience and conceptualize our bodies and how we understand the relation of the body to the experiencing, acting subject, or (...) self? Here, I focus on artificial heart devices (AHDs), including total artificial hearts (TAHs) and ventricular assist devices (VADs). While other devices, such as pacemakers and implantable cardiac defibrillators, assist the heart, I focus on devices that replace rather than assist organic function. AHDs, I argue, may have two opposing effects. On the one hand, having an AHD could alter experience, seemingly confirming that selves are shaped by the specifics of embodiment. On the other hand, AHDs are likely to encourage people to regard bodies as machines that are separable from the self. AHDs thus both confirm and undermine a body-self dualism. People with these devices may come to regard their bodies as machinelike even while having an artificial part alters their subjective experience. (shrink)

Sentence formation in Arabic is explained by the phenomenon of isnad. Isnad is an invisible link that connects the main elements of the sentence. Musnad ilayh and musnad, which are the parties to the isnad, are two mini-mum basic elements of a sentence. The first is the one about whom the judg-ment is made, and the second is the judgment itself. The basic elements of a sentence, mubtadā or fāil, correspond to musnad ilayh, khaber or fiil corres-pond to musnad. The (...) fact that these elements appear as marifa in the sentence -and not nakra- changes the meaning of the sentence. Abū Ya‘kūb al-Sakkākī (d. 626/1229) states that the musnadun ilayh, which comes as marifa in various forms, adds emphatic meanings such as takhsīs, cins, ta’ñīd, and ahd and affects the semantic interpretation of the sentence. In Sekkākī, while the syntactic structure explains the contextual situation, the context can also determine the syntactic structure. Therefore, the interaction of syntactic structure and context situation together determines the meaning of the sentence; but contextual situation is more effective in determining meaning. The fact that musnad and/or musnadun ilayh comes with ḍamīr, aʿalam, ism-i mawṣūl, ism-i ishārah, harf-i taʿrīf or iḍāfa determines the meaning of the sentence in terms of semantics. In cases where musnadun ilayh exceptionally comes as nakrah, most of the meanings in form of marifa are not seen. As a result, the fact that one and/or both sides of the isnad is a marifa noun changes the semantic interpretation of the sentence and this type of isnad is established for various rhetorical epigrams. We believe that most bioethies committees as well as individual ethics consultants have major shortcomings in that they are unlikely to be open to serving the widest number of citizens who may need their services when facing bioethical dilemmas. The HDCC serves as a community resource, is open to all citizens, is free standing, and provides a wide variety of perspectives which can assist patients, their families, and healthcare providers to explore a range of values and options.The HDCC serves as (...) a model for communities that seek to establish a bioethics resource. Further, the HDCC model permits the further exploration of ways in which important healthcare issues can be faced. AHD believes, in keeping with its mission, that the creation of the HDCC can increase the public's awareness of and involvement in healthcare issues. As B. Jennings reminds us,The mission of community health decisions projects is to stimulate a well-informed conversation where many voices are heard and all reasonable perspectives given due consideration. They not only inform, but also enable responsible civic participation and thoughtful health care decisionmaking (6).The HDCC model can serve to bring discussions on bioethical dilemmas out of secrecy into safer, yet more open, community fora.
