The Infancy of the History of Childhood: An Appraisal of Philippe Aries.Adrian Wilson - 1980 - History and Theory 19 (2):132-153.
Philippe Ariès's book, Centuries of Childhood, has been hailed for over a decade as a leading work on family history. Ari6s compared traditional and modern families and argued that mignotage and the teaching of reason during childhood developed only during the modern period. Despite its popularity, the book is severely flawed. First, Ariès uses printed and pictorial art forms as evidence for the sentiments of the period. Second, he does not develop his explanations. Though he remarks about the absence of (...)

Hayden White’s “Theory of the Historical Work”: A Re-Examination.Adrian Wilson - 2013 - Journal of the Philosophy of History 7 (1):32-56.
Hayden White’s Metahistory is best known for its “theory of tropes”; but Metahistory also put forward a distinct “theory of the historical work”, which has received rather less attention, and indeed has tended to be swallowed up by White’s tropology. This is a symptom of a wider problem, that the theory has been apprehended in paraphrase and synopsis rather than in the terms in which it was actually articulated. This paper seeks to redress these oversights through an exegetical analysis, embracing (...)

The Reflexive Test of Hayden White'smetahistory.Adrian Wilson - 2014 - History and Theory 53 (1):1-23.
This paper assesses Hayden White's Metahistory through the test of reflexivity; that is, it asks whether the book's “general theory of the structure of that mode of thought which is called ‘historical”’ applies, as it should, to its own history of nineteenth-century “historical consciousness.” Most components of the theoretical apparatus—the various concepts invoked in the “theory of the historical work” and in the “theory of tropes”—fail the reflexivity test; further, it emerges that those same components are also seriously flawed on (...)
