  1. Impact of Islamic Work Ethics on Organizational Citizenship Behaviors and Knowledge-Sharing Behaviors.Ghulam Murtaza, Muhammad Abbas, Usman Raja, Olivier Roques, Afsheen Khalid & Rizwan Mushtaq - 2016 - Journal of Business Ethics 133 (2):325-333.
This study examines the impact of Islamic Work Ethic on organizational citizenship behaviors and knowledge-sharing behaviors among university employees in Pakistan. A total of 215 respondents from public sector educational institutions participated in this research. The findings suggest that IWE has a positive effect on OCBs. In other words, individuals with high IWE demonstrate more citizenship behaviors than those with low IWE. The findings also suggest a positive effect of IWE on KSBs. Individuals with high IWE exhibit more KSBs than (...)

COVID-19 and its Challenges for the Healthcare System in Pakistan.Atiqa Khalid & Sana Ali - 2020 - Asian Bioethics Review 12 (4):551-564.
This article aims to highlight the healthcare issues raised by COVID-19 in Pakistan’s scenario. Initially, Pakistan lacked “standard operating procedures,” and the government had to ship testing kits from China and Japan. Moreover, due to violations of the lockdown and standard operating procedures (SOPs), the rapidly increasing number of cases created a burden on the healthcare system. More and more, this pandemic and its impact have grown. As vaccine development has not been successful yet, “herd immunity” can only be achieved (...)

Fight Like a Ferret: A Novel Approach of Using Art Therapy to Reduce Anxiety in Stroke Patients Undergoing Hospital Rehabilitation.Khalid Ali, Tony Gammidge & Diane Waller - 2014 - Medical Humanities 40 (1):56-60.
Rationale The holistic aspect of stroke rehabilitation to include psychological well-being is currently neglected, with more emphasis placed on physical recovery despite anxiety and depression being common poststroke. From the limited amount of current literature, it seems that creative strategies such as art therapy can be beneficial in reducing isolation and anxiety among stroke patients. Methods Stroke patients in a hospital rehabilitation unit were invited to participate in two weekly AT sessions for 6 weeks, facilitated by an art psychotherapist using paints, (...)

Radial-Basis-Function-Based Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Heavy Oil Viscosity Prediction Model for a Kuwait Viscous Oil Field.Khalid Ahmad, Faisal Hassan, Prasanta Kumar Mishra, Waleed Al-Khamees, Wei Shao, Songhua Chen, Magdalena Sandor & Yuesheng Cheng - 2016 - Interpretation: SEG 4 (2):SF81-SF92.
Characterizing heavy oil viscosity by nuclear magnetic resonance relaxation time measurements is much more challenging than characterizing light oil viscosities. Crude oils contain a wide range of hydrocarbons, resulting in broad [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] distributions that vary with the oil composition. Most often, a single geometric mean value [Formula: see text] or [Formula: see text] is correlated with the crude oil viscosity, which cannot accurately account for the inherent complexity of the oil constituent information. Furthermore, as (...)

    Analyzing Base-of-the-Pyramid Research From a (Sustainable) Supply Chain Perspective.Stefan Seuring & Raja Khalid - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 155 (3):663-686.
Research on the base-of-the-pyramid approach and the associated business case for deprived participants in informal markets now appears frequently in a range of business ethics and management-related journals. The present analysis of how supply chain management and sustainable supply chain management concepts are habitually used in base-of-the-pyramid research serves to strengthen the theoretical foundation of BoP research by addressing the related business case. Based on a content analysis of BoP papers published in English-speaking peer-reviewed journals between 2000 and 2014 from (...)

Sensitivity of Different Measures of the Visibility of Masked Primes: Influences of Prime–Response and Prime–Target Relations.Shah Khalid, Peter König & Ulrich Ansorge - 2011 - Consciousness and Cognition 20 (4):1473-1488.
Visual masking of primes lowers prime visibility but spares processing of primes as reflected in prime–target congruence and prime–response compatibility effects. However, the question is how to appropriately measure prime visibility. Here, we tested the influence of three procedural variables on prime visibility measures: prime–target similarity, prime–response similarity, and the variability of prime–response mappings. Our results show that a low prime–target similarity is a favorable condition for a prime visibility measure because it increases the sensitivity of this measure in comparison (...)

Rising Power Clusters and the Challenges of Local and Global Standards.Peter Knorringa & Khalid Nadvi - 2016 - Journal of Business Ethics 133 (1):55-72.
This paper explores the intersection between three processes associated with globalisation. First, the rise of emerging economies like China, Brazil and India, the so-called ‘Rising Powers’, and their potential to define the contours of globalisation, global production arrangements and global governance in the twenty-first century. Second, the importance of corporate social responsibility goals in the shaping of global trade rules and industrial practices. Third, the significance of small firm clusters as critical sites of industrial competitiveness. Some of the most significant (...)

Clusters, Chains and Compliance: Corporate Social Responsibility and Governance in Football Manufacturing in South Asia.Peter Lund- Thomsen & Khalid Nadvi - 2010 - Journal of Business Ethics 93 (S2):201 - 222.
A recent concern in the debate on corporate social responsibility (CSR) in developing countries relates to the tension between demands for CSR compliance found in many global value chains (GVCs) and the search for locally appropriate responses to these pressures. In this context, an emerging and relatively understudied area of interest relates to small firm industrial clusters. Local clusters offer the potential for local joint action, and thus a basis for improving local compliance on CSR through collective monitoring and local (...)

Khālid B. Al-Wālid’s Treaty with the People of Damascus: Identifying the Source Document Through Shared and Competing Historical Memories.Ibrahim Zein & Ahmed El-Wakil - 2020 - Journal of Islamic Studies 31 (3):295-328.
This article examines the different versions of the Treaty which Khālid b. al-Wālid granted to the people of Damascus and notes the variations and textual discrepancies between them by examining both Muslim and non-Muslim sources. We demonstrate how the accounts share a common historical memory in recalling the issuance of treaties in the era of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb. We argue that the original Treaty with the People of Damascus represented in all likelihood the template for all other treaties given to (...)

Nothing New Under the Sun: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders in the Ancient World.Walid Khalid Abdul-Hamid & Jamie Hacker Hughes - 2014 - Early Science and Medicine 19 (6):549-557.
Herodotus’ account of the Athenian spear carrier Epizelus’ psychogenic mutism following the Marathon Wars is usually cited as the first documented account of post-traumatic stress disorders in historical literature. This paper describes much earlier accounts of post combat disorders that were recorded as occurring in Mesopotamia during the Assyrian dynasty. The descriptions in this paper include many symptoms of what we would now identify in current diagnostic classification systems as post-traumatic stress disorders, including flashbacks, sleep disturbance and low mood. The (...)

With the ever increasing demand of higher education in the country, several measures have been adopted to fill the gap between demand and supply. Therefore, to meet the challenge number of new universities had been established in both the public and private sector during the last decade. Consequently, there is a competition between public and private sector universities for attracting the students. Claims of providing high quality education at an affordable price are being promulgated by both the sectors. The present (...)

Experimental Evidence Relating to the Person-Situation Interactionist Model of Ethical Decision Making.Bryan Church, James C. Gaa, S. M. Khalid Nainar & Mohamed M. Shehata - 2005 - Business Ethics Quarterly 15 (3):363-383.
According to a widely credited model in the business ethics literature, ethical decisions are a function of two kinds of factors, personal and situational, and these factors interact with each other. According to a contrary view of decision making that is widely held in some areas of business research, individuals’ decisions about ethical issues are purely a function of their self-interest.The laboratory experiment reported in this paper provides a test of the person-situation interactionist model, using the general theoretical and experimental (...)

This is an excerpt from the contentRecently older people have been the target of filmmakers and marketing campaigns; the concept of the “grey pound” has become a potentially significant attraction encouraging filmmakers to explore issues relating to age and ageing in mainstream films. The recent success of films such as Mamma Mia and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel have made a significant impact on the box office, and Amour securing the 2013 Palm D’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, proved that (...)

Surviving Cancer. A Review of Film “50/50”: Director: Jonathan Levine USA 2011 Star Rating: ***.Khalid Ali - 2012 - Journal of Medical Humanities 33 (3):213-214.
Most films dealing with cancer either adopt a sentimental approach or trivialize the impact of a diagnosis of cancer on patients and their families: Stepmom (USA, 1998), Sweet November (USA, 2001) and My Sister’s Keeper (USA, 2009) are a few examples. Few films, such as Wit (USA, 2001), have avoided common stereotypes and portrayed cancer patients as strong individuals trying to come to terms with their illness, rationalize its impact on their lives, and deal with the healthcare professionals in a (...)

Automatically Assess Day Similarity Using Visual Lifelogs.Khalid El Asnaoui & Petia Radeva - 2019 - Journal of Intelligent Systems 29 (1):298-310.
Today, we witness the appearance of many lifelogging cameras that are able to capture the life of a person wearing the camera and which produce a large number of images everyday. Automatically characterizing the experience and extracting patterns of behavior of individuals from this huge collection of unlabeled and unstructured egocentric data present major challenges and require novel and efficient algorithmic solutions. The main goal of this work is to propose a new method to automatically assess day similarity from the (...)

In recent years, the important and fast growth in the development and demand of multimedia products is contributing to an insufficiency in the bandwidth of devices and network storage memory. Consequently, the theory of data compression becomes more significant for reducing data redundancy in order to allow more transfer and storage of data. In this context, this paper addresses the problem of lossy image compression. Indeed, this new proposed method is based on the block singular value decomposition power method that (...)
