‘The Alexandrian Condition’: Suits on Boredom, Death, and Utopian Games.Christopher C. Yorke - forthcoming - Sport, Ethics and Philosophy:1-9.
ABSTRACTI argue that the apparently exclusive choice between Suits’ utopia of gameplay and death by suicide is a false dilemma, one which obscures a ‘third way’ of positive boredom. Further, I offer a deeper reading of the internal logic of Suits’ utopian vision, identifying two different temporal phases of his utopia. At time U1, just after the founding of Suits’ techno-Cockaygne, the Alexandrian condition affects ‘freshmen’ utopians by producing a state of existential meaninglessness and thereby conceivably motivating utopian suicide. Re-Creating the Canon: Augustan Poetry and the Alexandrian Past.James E. G. Zetzel - 1983 - Critical Inquiry 10 (1):83.
The Alexandrian emphasis on smallness, elegance, and slightness at the expense of grand themes in major poetic genres was not preciosity for its own sake: although the poetry was written by and for scholars, it had much larger sources than the bibliothecal context in which it was composed. Since the time of the classical poets, much had changed. Earlier Greek poetry was an intimate part of the life of the city-state, written for its religious occasions and performed by its (...)

    The Poetry Machine: How the Alexandrian Avant-Garde Created a Library.Ole Olesen-Bagneux - 2017 - Philosophy and Literature 41 (2):304-318.
When it comes to cataloging, a poem is a far cry from a card index.1 The historical origins of storing and retrieving of literature can be traced back to the Library of Alexandria. Within the walls of this library, complex knowledge organizational techniques and practices arose in regards to classification and retrieval of text.2 Such practices had been at play in human culture before,3 but the level of literacy and the organizational qualities this literacy brought about reached a new height (...)

  16. Ludic Proof: Greek Mathematics and the Alexandrian Aesthetic.Reviel Netz - 2009 - Cambridge University Press.
This book represents a new departure in science studies: an analysis of a scientific style of writing, situating it within the context of the contemporary style of literature. Its philosophical significance is that it provides a novel way of making sense of the notion of a scientific style. For the first time, the Hellenistic mathematical corpus - one of the most substantial extant for the period - is placed centre-stage in the discussion of Hellenistic culture as a whole. Professor Netz (...)

The latest book of Reviel Netz presents a highly erudite analysis of the style of Hellenistic mathematics. Besides the Introduction and Conclusion the book is composed of four chapters. Before turning to more general remarks I would like first to outline the contents of the book. The Introduction starts with the presentation of Archimedes’ Spiral lines. In a condensed form, the author outlines his approach and calls attention to the stylistic peculiarities of that work. Most of the themes discussed in more (...)

'It is ... exactly because Hecuba is nothing to us that her sorrows are so suitable a motive for a tragedy.' Oscar Wilde Much of the contemporary debate concerning the nature and role of fictive emotions has argued that we do feel garden-variety emotions for fictional characters; the puzzle has been to account for this, given our knowledge of their fictional status. In this paper I argue that many of the emotional responses we have towards fictional characters are nothing like (...)
