  1. Stronger Prejudices Are Associated With Decreased Model-Based Control.Miriam Sebold, Hao Chen, Aleyna Önal, Sören Kuitunen-Paul, Negin Mojtahedzadeh, Maria Garbusow, Stephan Nebe, Hans-Ulrich Wittchen, Quentin J. M. Huys, Florian Schlagenhauf, Michael A. Rapp, Michael N. Smolka & Andreas Heinz - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Background: Prejudices against minorities can be understood as habitually negative evaluations that are kept in spite of evidence to the contrary. Therefore, individuals with strong prejudices might be dominated by habitual or “automatic” reactions at the expense of more controlled reactions. Computational theories suggest individual differences in the balance between habitual/model-free and deliberative/model-based decision-making.Methods: 127 subjects performed the two Step task and completed the blatant and subtle prejudice scale. Results: By using analyses of choices and reaction times in combination with computational (...)

Are Turkish doctors in deep water? The role of professional ethics and factors affecting the medical brain drain: A qualitative study from Turkey.F. Gülsüm Önal & Fatih Erkan Akay - forthcoming - Developing World Bioethics.
With the increased rate of the Turkish medical brain drain (MDB) in recent years, there is a need for more comprehensive studies to elucidate its vague migratory factors. The aim of this paper is to try to narrow that gap by analyzing present impacts of the MDB in Turkey and to evaluate if these aspects were driven by professional ethical values, and if so, what ethical principles they were based on. In-depth interviews were conducted with 19 doctors from various backgrounds, (...)

The Place of Wisdom In the Philosophy of Religion.Mehmet Önal - 2008 - Proceedings of the Xxii World Congress of Philosophy 45:239-250.
In this paper, I will try to make clear that aspect of wisdom which relates to the practical application of revealed commands through prophetic practices and traditions of the other founders of religions. Here, I also refer to the wisdom in the Qur’an and the Old and New Testaments of the Bible as examples of the use of this concept in religion. Although both philosophy and religion require using the form of wisdom within a holistic approach, in the course of (...)

In his second period of logical research, which includes several books and treatises, Athir al-Din al-Abhari is the only Avicennan logician who vindicated as invalid one of the two most important Avicennan novelties: iqtirani conditional syllogism. His exposition and reasons for this invalidity in these books and treatises are various and rooted in numerous kinds of conditionals and their truth-conditions and their developments in the books and treatises. His most important reason to deny conditional syllogism is notice to the manifold (...)

  32. Childhood experience and the expression of genetic potential: What childhood neglect tells us about nature and nurture. [REVIEW]Bruce D. Perry - 2002 - Brain and Mind 3 (1):79-100.
Studies of childhood abuse and neglect haveimportant lessons for considerations of natureand nurture. While each child has uniquegenetic potentials, both human and animalstudies point to important needs that everychild has, and severe long-term consequencesfor brain function if those needs are not met. The effects of the childhood environment, favorable or unfavorable, interact with all theprocesses of neurodevelopment (neurogenesis, migration, differentiation, apoptosis, arborization, synaptogenesis, synapticsculpting, and myelination). The time coursesof all these neural processes are reviewed herealong with statements of core principles forboth genetic and (...)
