The Relations of Parental Affect and Encouragement to Children's Moral Emotions and Behaviour.Tracy L. Spinrad, Sandra H. Losoya, Nancy Eisenberg, Richard A. Fabes, Stephanie A. Shepard, Amanda Cumberland, Ivanna K. Guthrie & Bridget C. Murphy - 1999 - Journal of Moral Education 28 (3):323-337.
Although researchers have been concerned with the effects of parental socialisation on children's outcomes, there has been surprisingly little work on the socialisation of children's moral emotions and behaviour. The purpose of this study was to explore the role of observed parental affect and encouragement in children's empathy-related responding and moral behaviour (i.e. cheating). Moreover, the moderating influence of children's characteristics (i.e. sex) on this relationship was investigated. Ninety-seven girls and 119 boys (mean age = 73 months) with a parent (...)

    Rejecting Amanda Machin’s Complacent Democracy.Rob Lawlor - 2017 - Environmental Ethics 39 (2):211-233.
Machin defends a new approach to climate change, which some claim is an “original” and “lucid” contribution that will “revitalize” the debate. Drawing on Slavoj Žižek’s interpretation of parallax and Chantal Mouffe’s radical democracy, Machin focuses on negotiation rather than moral argument, arguing that we should embrace disagreement. In the process of defending her view, Machin dismisses Naomi Klein, and various moral philosophers, arguing that framing the debate in terms of moral argument is ineffective, divisive, and ultimately leads to extremism (...)

  48. Three Conceptions of Action in Moral Theory.Tamar Schapiro - 2001 - Noûs 35 (1):93–117.
The utilitarian conception, which I call “action as production,” holds that action is a way of making use of the world, conceived as a causal mechanism. According to the rational intuitionist conception, which I call “action as assertion,” action is a way of acknowledging the value in the world, conceived as a realm of status. On the Kantian constructivist conception, which I call “action as participation,” action is a way of making the world, qua causal mechanism, come to count as (...)

Learning to Write: Plowing and Hoeing, Labor and Essaying.Amanda Fulford - 2016 - Educational Theory 66 (4):519-534.

The starting point is the increasing use of what are termed “technologies” of writing — “handbooks” for students that address issues of academic writing — that systematize, (...)

The Way We Argue Now: A Study in the Cultures of Theory.Amanda Anderson - 2006 - Princeton University Press.
How do the ways we argue represent a practical philosophy or a way of life? Are concepts of character and ethos pertinent to our understanding of academic debate? In this book, Amanda Anderson analyzes arguments in literary, cultural, and political theory, with special attention to the ways in which theorists understand ideals of critical distance, forms of subjective experience, and the determinants of belief and practice. Drawing on the resources of the liberal and rationalist tradition, Anderson interrogates the limits (...)
