Status of National Research Bioethics Committees in the WHO African Region.Joses Kirigia, Charles Wambebe & Amido Baba-Moussa - 2005 - BMC Medical Ethics 6 (1):1-7.
Background The Regional Committee for Africa of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2001 expressed concern that some health-related studies undertaken in the Region were not subjected to any form of ethics review. In 2003, the study reported in this paper was conducted to determine which Member country did not have a national research ethics committee (REC) with a view to guiding the WHO Regional Office in developing practical strategies for supporting those countries. Methods This is a descriptive study. The (...)

Zhijue as Appreciation and Realization in Zhu Xi: An Examination Through Hun and Po.Eiho Baba - 2017 - Philosophy East and West 67 (2):301-317.
In his commentary on the Mencius 6A : 15 passage "the organ of the heartmind is thinking," Zhu Xi writes: "The heart-mind is capable of thinking and this thinking is its functional role ".1 The heart-mind is also said to "possess a multitude of li and respond to ten-thousand events ". Zhu Xi regularly associates this heart-mind as "thinking" that "responds to ten-thousand events" with a special process he refers to as "zhijue" 知覺. For instance, he explains that "the heart-mind (...)

Ethical Leadership and Corporate Social Responsibility in China: A Multilevel Study of Their Effects on Trust and Organizational Citizenship Behavior.Louise Tourigny, Jian Han, Vishwanath V. Baba & Polly Pan - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 158 (2):427-440.
Using multisource data and multilevel analysis, we propose that the ethical stance of supervisors influences subordinates’ perceptions of corporate social responsibility which in turn influences subordinates’ trust in the organization resulting in their taking increased personal social responsibility and engagement in organizational citizenship behaviors oriented toward both the organization and other individuals. Using a multilevel model, we assessed the extent to which ethical leadership and CSR at the work unit level impacts subordinates’ behaviors mediated by organizational trust at the individual (...)

The Trigonometric Functions, as They Were in the Arabic-Islamic Civilization.Ali Moussa - 2010 - Arabic Sciences and Philosophy 20 (1):93-104.
In the Greek/Indian period, it is noticeable that different radii were used in connection with the chord. This manner continued in the Indian period with the sine, i.e. different sine tables existed. But throughout the Arabic-Islamic period, there was stability in the radius (for the sine). At the time of al-Batt new terms were introduced, not as functions of angles but as lengths, and again different tables for the same term. Here these terms were not bounded to the circle, and (...)

The Use of Husserl’s Method in Bernard Lonergan’s Trinitarian Theology.Teodor Bernardus Baba - 2009 - Philosophy and Theology 21 (1):43.
The question that arises in this article is whether we can find elements of phenomenology in Bernard Lonergan’s Trinitarian theology. With help of other Lonergan scholars, I have discovered that modern thinking plays an important role in the theology and philosophy ofthis Jesuit author. Moreover, the terminology of modern philosophy coexists with the terminology of classical and especially Tomisticthought. This article is interested in the elements that Lonergan takes from the modern philosophy and emphasizes the centrality ofHusserlian phenomenology among the other (...)

  10. Does Sex Composition of Offspring Relate to Fertility in Urban Areas? The Case of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.Moussa Bougma, Vissého Adjiwanou & Jean-François Kobiané - forthcoming - Journal of Biosocial Science:1-16.
With the onset of the demographic transition in sub-Saharan Africa, couples’ desired number of children and the sex composition of offspring may become conflicted, with potential effects on future fertility. While intuitively expected, this effect has not been observed in studies in sub-Saharan Africa, where the level of fertility is higher than in other African regions. In this study, the hypothesis of a conflicted situation was examined by assessing the effect of sex composition of offspring on women’s intentions regarding additional (...)

Theory of Syllogisms with Categorical, Conditional and Disjunctive Connectives Developed by Arabian Logicians.Moussa Fatahine & Yagoubi Mahmmoud - 2020 - Studia Humana 9 (1):19-27.
In this paper, we are trying to summarize the peak of achievement of the Arabian logicians of the fifteenth century by making a classification and sketching in familiar terms the conditional and subjunctive syllogisms in Muḥammad Ibn Yusūf al-SSinūsī’s work, i.e. in his explanation of Kitāb al-Muḫtaşar fī al-Manṭiq of al-Imām Muḥammad Ibn ʿArafa.

The Status of Conditional Syllogism in Syllogistics.Moussa Fatahine & Yagoubi Mahmmoud - 2020 - Studia Humana 9 (1):12-18.
The form of the conditional syllogism resembles that of the categorical syllogism, while its subject matter is at least a conditional premise, but its conclusion is always conditional conjunctive or disjunctive. This mixed structure to which we apply the rules of the categorical syllogism, is a structure of which Aristotle did not have an idea, and which the Stoics did not conceive, and which the non-Arabian logicians did not know until in modern times. But what we have to notice here (...)

The Daily Life of Slaves in the Last Years of the Bamana States of Kaarta and Segou.Moussa Sow - 2011 - In Slavery in Africa: Archaeology and Memory. pp. 47.
This chapter attempts to further the understanding of Sahelo‐Sudanic systems of slavery via enquiries into the daily life of slaves. This work is based on the memories of elders in certain villages within the zone of the ancient state of Kaarta and the buffer zone between it and the state of Segou, an area corresponding to the modern Malian administrative Cercles of Kolokani and Banamba. Temporally, the focus is on the period directly before the colonial era. In particular, the mode (...)

Mathematical Analysis of an Industrial HIV/Aids Model That Incorporates Carefree Attitude Towards Sex.Baba Seidu, O. D. Makinde & Christopher S. Bornaa - 2021 - Acta Biotheoretica 69 (3):257-276.
A nonlinear differential equation model is proposed to study the dynamics of HIV/aids and its effects on workforce productivity. The disease-free equilibrium point of the model is shown to be locally asymptotically stable when the associated basic reproduction number R0\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\mathcal{{R}}_{0}$$\end{document} is less than unity. Analysis of Farmers' Vulnerability to Climate Change in Niger State, Nigeria.Jude Nwafor Eze, Umar Aliyu, Abdulmalik Alhaji-Baba & Muhammad Alfa - 2018 - International Letters of Social and Humanistic Sciences 82:1-9.
Publication date: 11 June 2018 Source: Author: Jude Nwafor Eze, Umar Aliyu, Abdulmalik Alhaji-Baba, Muhammad Alfa This research evaluates the farmers’ vulnerability to climate change in Niger State. Strategies for reducing the effect of climate change have regularly been made without experimental foundations and adequate information on farmers’ vulnerability to climate change in the study area. Thus, integrated farmers’ vulnerability assessment approach was employed by classifying socioeconomic and biophysical indicators of vulnerability into adaptive capacity, sensitivity and exposure to determine (...)

Religion and Mortgage Misrepresentation.James Conklin, Moussa Diop & Mingming Qiu - forthcoming - Journal of Business Ethics:1-23.
We investigate whether religion acts as a deterrent to the types of mortgage misrepresentation that played a significant role in the recent housing boom and bust. Using a large sample of mortgages originated from 2000 to 2007, we provide evidence that local religious adherence is associated with a lower likelihood of home appraisal overstatement and owner occupancy misreporting. The evidence on borrower income misrepresentation is mixed. Religiosity does not appear to reduce the incidence of income misrepresentation; however, it seems to (...)

The problem of the Qibla was one of the central issues in the scientific culture of Medieval Islam, and to solve it properly, one needed mathematics and observation. The mathematics consisted of two parts: plane trigonometry and spherical trigonometry . Observation and its instruments were needed to find the geographical coordinates of Mecca and the given location; these coordinates will be the input data in the formulas of the Qibla . In his Almagest , Ab?? al-Waf???? produced a brilliant work (...)

Is Berkeley's Theory of Ideas A Variant of Locke's?Teppei Baba - 2008 - Proceedings of the Xxii World Congress of Philosophy 16:9-15.
I try to show that Berkeley's theory of ideas is not a variant of Locke's. We can find such an interpretation of Berkeley in Thomas Reid. So, we could call this interpretation a 'traditional interpretation'. This traditional interpretation has an influence still now, for example, Tomida interprets Berkeley in this line (Tomida2002). We will see that this traditional interpretation gives a serious problem to Berkeley (section 1). And I am going to present an argument against this traditional interpretation (section 2).
