Le problème central des actuelles discussions écologico-éthiques est le périmètre de la communauté morale. Ein zentrales Problem der aktuellen ökologischen Ethik-Diskussion ist die Reichweite der moralischen Gemeinschaft. Neben der Frage nach dem moralischen Status von Embryonen einerseits und der nicht-menschlicher Lebewesen andererseits steht der Begriff der Nachhaltigkeit im Zentrum der ökologisch-ethischen Debatte. Nachhaltigkeit meint gemeinhin eine Handlungsweise, die zukünftigen Generationen Bedingungen hinterlässt, die es ihnen gestatten, ein zufriedenes Leben zu führen. Insofern ist Nachhaltigkeit ein Prinzip für die politische und ökonomische Umsetzung intergenerationeller Gerechtigkeit.

Centralni problem aktualne ekološko-etičke diskusije je opseg moralne zajednice. U centru ekološko-etičke debate – pored pitanja o moralnom statusu embrija, s jedne strane, te pitanja o ne-ljudskim živim bićima, s druge strane – stoji pojam održivosti. Održivost općenito znači način djelovanja koji budućim generacijama ostavlja uvjete koji su njima dostatni da bi vodili zadovoljavajući život. Utoliko održivost predstavlja princip političke i ekonomske provedbe intergeneracijske pravednosti.

The central problem of actual ecologically-ethical discussion is the range of a moral community. In the focus of the ecologically-ethical debate – beside the issue of a moral status of an embryo, on one level, and that of a non-human living being, on the other- is the notion of sustenance. Sustenance in a general sense represents the way of acting which provides circumstances sufficient to enable future generations to have a contented life.
