"The importance of questions is beyond doubt. But the degree of attention paid to them in logic and linguistics is still less than they deserve." What is a question? How to represent questions in formal languages? How to model reasoning in which questions are involved? Can we prove anything by means of pure questioning? How to model goal-directed problem solving? These are the main issues of Andrzej Wi niewski's "Questions, Inferences, and Scenarios." This book offers a state-of-the-art exposition of (...) Inferential Erotetic Logic, that is, an approach to the logic of questions focused on inferences which lead to questions as conclusions. Wi niewski characterizes semantic relations which determine validity of these inferences within the framework of Minimal Erotetic Semantics, applicable to a wide range of formal languages. He elaborates in detail the concept of erotetic search scenario, a tool for modelling problem solving. Moreover, the author presents some applications of Inferential Erotetic Logic in proof theory. Andrzej Wi niewski is one of the most prominent contemporary researchers in the logic of questions. Wskażmy na początku trzy zasadnicze powody, które zainspirowały toruńskie środowisko filozoficzne do organizacji na Uniwersytecie Mikołaja Kopernika w Toruniu spotkania znawców i badaczy spuścizny twórczej Henryka Elzenberga. Pierwszy to wzgląd o charakterze rocznicowym. Mijająca w tym roku 120 rocznica urodzin i 40 rocznica śmierci Elzenberga jest właściwą chwilą stwarzającą najlepszą sposobność uczczenia pamięci wybitnego polskiego filozofa i humanisty, przywołania i podkreślenia jego dokonań w zakresie filozofii, aksjologii, etyki, estetyki, filozofii kultury i literatury. Drugi - jeśli tak rzec można - ma (...) charakter lokalny. Wiele lat dojrzałego życia i znaczna część biografii twórczej Elzenberga przypada na toruński okres jego działalności. Obok Tadeusza Czeżowskiego tworzył w Uniwersytecie Mikołaja Kopernika środowisko filozoficzne, w wydatnym stopniu kształtując jego oblicze duchowe i intelektualną kulturę. Wykłady i seminaria prowadzone w murach uczelni oraz tzw. privatissima odbywające się w domu Profesora cieszyły się niesłabnącym powodzeniem nie tylko u adeptów filozofii, ale także osób różnych zainteresowań i profesji naukowych. Mogli oni podziwiać rozległość wykształcenia i zainteresowań Profesora, jego niezwykle bogatą osobowość i finezyjną kulturę intelektualną. Szacunek budziła dociekliwość badawcza filozofa głęboko penetrująca podejmowane tematy, a szczególnie umiejętność pobudzania do twórczego myślenia i wspólnego dochodzenia do prawdy. Toruński okres w życiu Elzenberga był także - jak można to chyba bez przesady powiedzieć - zwieńczeniem drogi jego intelektualnego rozwoju i aktywności twórczej. Wszystko to stawia przed kolejnym pokoleniem filozofów związanych z toruńską uczelnią zaszczytne zobowiązania i powinności wobec osoby i dorobku Profesora. Trzeci powód jest bardziej ogólnej natury.Dzieło filozofa niewątpliwie należy do najznakomitszych osiągnięć polskiej humanistyki i powinno, naszym zdaniem, znaleźć bardziej poczesne miejsce w świadomości ludzi wykształconych, wyraźniej zaistnieć w rodzimym życiu intelektualnym. Mimo wzrastającego zainteresowania twórczością Elzenberga, istnieje w dalszym ciągu dysproporcja pomiędzy znaczeniem jego dokonań na polu aksjologii,etyki filozofii kultury, krytyki literackiej i literatury a miejscem,jakie zajmuje ona w pamięci i świadomości zbiorowej. Dlatego należy podejmować takie inicjatywy, aby najbardziej wartościowe tradycje rodzimej kultury intelektualnej nie stawały się jedynie pomnikami przeszłości, ale stanowiły przede wszystkim żywy składnik współczesnej kultury Dotychczasowe spotkania konferencyjne charakteryzowała wieloaspektowość podejścia do spuścizny filozofa. Jej badacze, dzieląc się wynikami swoich dociekań,przedstawili dowolnie wybrane tematy, koncentrując się na ich opisywaniu, wyjaśnianiu czy interpretowaniu. Wybór tematyki uzależniony był od kierunku zainteresowań i predylekcji badacza.Zaprezentowano mniej lub bardziej bogaty zestaw problemów odnoszących się do różnych aspektów myśli twórczej filozofa.Otrzymywaliśmy w efekcie analizy wybranych zagadnień z bardzo bogatego obszaru zainteresowań filozofa, począwszy od teorii wartości poprzez tematy etyczne, estetyczne, historyczno filozoficzne, aż po te z zakresu filozofii kultury, literatury, krytyki literackiej, religii i mistyki. Podejmowano także wiele innych bardziej szczegółowych i drobniejszych kwestii odnajdywanych w pismach filozofa, a zwłaszcza tych inspirowanych, imponującą bogactwem tematycznym, refleksją zobiektywizowaną na kartach Kłopotu z istnieniem.Przykładem takie wieloaspektowego odniesienia się do myśli twórczej autora Kłopotu z istnieniem była konferencja zorganizowana przez toruńskie środowisko filozoficzne w 1997 roku pod tytułem Henryk Elzenberg. Dziedzictwo idei. Filozofia - aksjologia - kultura.Tytuł bez wątpienia sugeruje, że intencją organizatorów było zakreślenie w miarę pełnej panoramy zagadnień podejmowanych przez filozofa wraz z ich analizą. (shrink)

Ponadto […] udało się w tej publikacji zgromadzić bardzo liczne, a jednocześnie reprezentatywne grono najwybitniejszych polskich filozofów, którzy ofiarowali profesorowi Tyburskiemu swoje cenne teksty, co czyni tę książkę tym bardziej wartościową i spowoduje, jak można (...) przypuszczać, że jeszcze po wielu latach będzie się do niej sięgało jako o źródła oryginalnych i bardzo ciekawych przemyśleń. Zmiany te czȩsto wi¸a}ż¸a} siȩ z redukcj¸a} zatrudnienia i kształtowaniem nowych relacji z pracownikami. Outplacement stanowi wci¸a}ż mało popularn¸a} i słabo rozpoznawaln¸a} w Polsce koncepcjȩ odpowiedzialnego zarz¸adzania zwolnieniami pracowników, która pozwala na złagodzenie negatywnych skutków utraty pracy i na skrócenie okresu bezrobocia. Celem opracowania jest przybliżenie istoty i potencjału stosowania outplacementu w Polsce. Podjȩta krytyczna analiza literatury przedmiotu obejmuje wskazanie działań na rzecz antycypacji procesów restrukturyzacji i (...) funkcji zwolnień monitorowanych w ochronie kompetencji kluczowych przedsiȩbiorstw. Określeni zostali główni interesariusze outplacementu w skali regionalnej oraz możliwości organizacji outplacementu przez partnerstwa i pakty lokalne, czyli z udziałem podmiotów sektora komercyjnego, publicznego i pozarz¸adowego. Podsumowanie zawiera wnioski, co do możliwych działań praktycznych. ** The ongoing at the beginning of the XXI century global economic crisis forces companies to take over restructuring actions. These changes are often associated with the reduction of employment and shaping of the new contract agreements with employees. Outplacement continues to be weakly popular and poorly recognized in Poland. It is the concept of responsible management of redundancies, which allows to mitigate the negative effects of losing a job and reduce the period of unemployment. The aim of this paper is to describe the essence and potential of outplacement usage in Poland. Undertaken critical analysis of the literature indicate measures for anticipate restructuring and outplacement functions in the protection of key enterprises competencies. Outplacement key stakeholders at the regional level were specified. Possibilities of outplacement organization including the local partnerships and pacts were explored. In other words, the cooperation of the commercial, public and non-governmental sector entities. Summary include proposals for further practical actions. (shrink)

The aim of this book is to present and analyze philosophical conceptions concerning mathematics and logic as formulated by Polish logicians, mathematicians and philosophers in the 1920s and 1930s. It was a remarkable period in the history of Polish science, in particular in the history of Polish logic and mathematics. Therefore, it is justified to ask whether and to what extent the development of logic and mathematics was accompanied by a philosophical reflection. We try to answer those questions by analyzing (...) both works of Polish logicians and mathematicians who have a philosophical temperament as well as their research practice. Works and philosophical views of the following Polish scientists will be analyzed: Wacław Sierpiński, Zygmunt Janiszewski, Stefan Mazurkiewicz, Stefan Banach Hugo Steinhaus, Eustachy Żylińsk and Leon Chwistek, Jan Łukasiewicz, Zygmunt Zawirski, Stanisław Leśniewski, Tadeusz Kotarbiński, Kazimierz Ajdukiewicz, Alfred Tarski, Andrzej Mostowski and Henryk Mehlberg, Jan Sleszyński, Stanisław Zaremba and Witold Wilkosz. To indicate the background of scientists being active in the 1920s and 1930s we consider in Chapter 1 some predecessors, in particular: Jan Śniadecki, Józef Maria Hoene-Wroński, Samuel Dickstein and Edward Stamm. The paper consists of two parts, outlined in the title.I. In the historical science time appears as an element of the historian’s workshop. The historian collects source information, evaluates them and assigns respective dates. Only on the ground of thus “processed” sources may he reproduce the past: events and longer development processes, setting them in time. This dated time is understood colloquially as something objective, which runs one way and may be measured.II. A historian who studies the past reality depends (...) on the extent to which those sources are preserved. As a result of their interpretation, with the use of increasingly excellent research methods, he reproduces that reality. He must carry out an ongoing selection of historical facts found. This exposes him to temptations of such selection of those facts so as to adjust the historical knowledge to serve well the national interests, his own political opinions, etc. In this way the historian exerts influence on social awareness, which may consists of various myths and stereotypes, which sometimes lead to negative social behaviors: aggression, chauvinism, etc. Therefore, for researcher honesty’s sake and in the sense of moral responsibility, he must be careful to be as impartial as possible in his work. The article reviews the book Metodologia nauk [Methodology of the Sciences], by Adam Grobler.

The aim of this study is to discuss in what sense one can speak about universal character of logic. The authors argue that the role of logic stands mainly in the generality of its language and its unrestricted applications to any field of knowledge and normal human life. The authors try to precise that universality of logic tends in: (a) general character of inference rules and the possibility of using those rules as a tool of justification of theorems of every (...) science, (b) principles of correct formulating of thoughts and using language, and (c) general deductive method of reasoning, i.e in the study of language syntax and semantics. The authors present two theories of language syntax and semantics as exemplifications based on the Tarski’s famous results in metalogic: (1) a formalization of universal syntax system by Andrzej Grzegorczyk based on a new primitive notion of quotation-marks operator, and (2) an enlarged system of axiomatic theory of syntax of any categorial language of Urszula Wybraniec-Skardowska’s in which the main role plays the relation of concatenation understood as a set-theoretical function. The study concludes in arguing that the importance of the result (2) lies not only in solving some philosophical problems but also in different fields of knowledge and spheres of human life as ex. in discussion and education as well. The main aim of the present paper is to explain a nature of relationships exist between Nelson and Heyting algebras. In the realization, a topological duality theory of Heyting and Nelson algebras based on the topological duality theory of Priestley for bounded distributive lattices are applied. The general method of construction of spaces dual to Nelson algebras from a given dual space to Heyting algebra is described. The algebraic counterpart of this construction being a generalization of the Fidel-Vakarelov construction is (...) also given. These results are applied to compare the equational category N of Nelson algebras and some its subcategories with the equational category H of Heyting algebras. It is proved that the category N is topological over the category H. (shrink)

We develop the theory of Cκ, λi, a strongly normal filter over [MATHEMATICAL SCRIPT CAPITAL P]κλ for Mahlo κ. We prove a minimality result, showing that any strongly normal filter containing {x ∈ [MATHEMATICAL SCRIPT CAPITAL P]κλ: |x | = |x ∩ κ | and |x | is inaccessible} also contains Cκ, λi. We also show that functions can be used to obtain a basis for Cκ, λi.
