    Children's First and Second-Order False-Belief Reasoning in a Verbal and a Low-Verbal Task.Bart Hollebrandse, Angeliek Hout & Petra Hendriks - 2014 - Synthese 191 (3).
We can understand and act upon the beliefs of other people, even when these conflict with our own beliefs. Children’s development of this ability, known as Theory of Mind, typically happens around age 4. Research using a looking-time paradigm, however, established that toddlers at the age of 15 months old pass a non-verbal false-belief task (Onishi and Baillargeon in Science 308:255–258, 2005). This is well before the age at which children pass any of the verbal false-belief tasks. In this study (...)

  2. A Critical Discussion of the Characteristic Properties of List PR and FPTP Systems.Eliora van der Hout, Jack Stecher & Harrie de Swart - 2007 - Analyse & Kritik 29 (2):259-268.
This paper discusses the characteristic properties of List PR systems and FPTP systems, as given in Hout 2005 and Hout et al. 2006. While many of the properties we consider are common to both systems, it turns out that the British system distinguishes itself by satisfying the district cancel lation property, while the Dutch system distinguishes itself by satisfying consistency and anonymity. For scoring rules, topsonlyness is equivalent to being party fragmentation-proof. One might present this as an argument (...)

Characteristic Properties of FPTP Systems.Eliora van der Hout & Harrie de Swart - 2010 - Theory and Decision 68 (3):325-340.
In this article, we model FPTP systems as social preference rules and give two characterizations. We show that a social preference rule is an FPTP system if, and only if, it satisfies the axioms of subset consistency, district consistency, subset cancellation, and district cancellation. The second characterization consists of the axioms of subset consistency, subset anonymity, neutrality, topsonlyness, Pareto optimality, district consistency and district cancellation. The characterizations give us an opportunity to compare the characteristic properties of FPTP systems to the (...)

In this study, we investigated the influence of individual learners’ motivation on the collaborative discovery learning process. In this we distinguished the motivation of the individual learners and had eye for the composition of groups, which could be homogeneous or heterogeneous in terms of motivation. The study involved 73 dyads of 10th‐grade learners. Learners worked in dyads on separate screens in a shared discovery learning environment. They communicated using a chat box. A self‐report questionnaire was used to measure the motivational (...)

  32. Verbs, Nouns and Affixation∗∗∗.Jane Grimshaw - unknown
What explains the rich patterns of deverbal nominalization? Why do some nouns have argument structure, while others do not? We seek a solution in which properties of deverbal nouns are composed from properties of verbs, properties of nouns, and properties of the morphemes that relate them. The theory of each plus the theory of how they combine, should give the explanation. In exploring this, we investigate properties of two theories of nominalization. In one, the verb-like properties of deverbal nouns result (...)

The Impact of First‐Year Students' Living Situation on the Integration Process and Study Progress.S. Beekhoven *, U. de Jong & H. van Hout - 2004 - Educational Studies 30 (3):277-290.
Students in different living situations are the central issue of this study. Large groups of first‐year students not only transfer to a new educational system, but also start to live independently in rooms. The questions we answer, in this paper, are whether the students' living situations affect the integration process and how it is related to study progress. A total 782 first‐year full‐time students responded to questionnaires. A remarkable conclusion was that a positive effect of living independently on integration was (...)

Nature is Mine: Conceptions of Nature in the Dutch Ecogenomics Community.Sanne Van der Hout - 2014 - Life Sciences, Society and Policy 10 (1):1-16.
Every field of science, but especially biology, contains particular conceptions of nature. These conceptions are not merely epistemological or ontological, but also have normative dimensions; they provide an ethos, a framework for moral orientation. These normative dimensions, whilst often remaining ‘hidden’ and inarticulate, influence the way in which biologists practice their profession. In this paper, I explore what happens when different versions of these implicit normative frameworks collide. To do so, I will focus on a case study from the field (...)
