Pressure Behavior of Shale-Gas Flow in Dual Porous Medium Based on Fractal Theory.Peiqing Lian, Taizhong Duan, Rui Xu, Linlin Li & Meng Li - 2018 - Interpretation: SEG 6 (4):SN1-SN10.
The shale gas reservoir is a complex subject with a multiscale nanopore and fracture system, and the gas flow mechanism indicates an evident difference from the conventional gas reservoir. We have introduced fractal theory to characterize the multiscale distribution of pores and fractures, and we have developed a single-phase radial flow model considering nonequilibrium adsorption to describe the flow characteristics in the shale gas reservoir. The numerical solution of the flow model in Euclidean space is obtained by inversing the analytical (...)

Do Local Protestant Values Affect Corporate Cash Holdings?Huajing Hu, Yili Lian & Wencang Zhou - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 154 (1):147-166.
This study examines how local Protestant belief, as one type of social norms, affects corporate cash policies. We find that firms located in areas with more Protestants hold less cash reserves. The influence of local Protestant belief on cash holdings is more profound for firms with weak corporate governance and firms with one geographic segment. In addition, we find that the difference in cash deployment is reflected in the difference in firms’ investment and payout policies. Overall, our study shows that (...)

The Most Fashionable and the Most Relevant: A Review of Contemporary Chinese Political Philosophy. [REVIEW]Zhou Lian - 2009 - Diogenes 56 (1):128-137.
This paper presents a review of the main trends of contemporary political philosophy in China. First, it provides a general picture of the presence of contemporary western political philosophy in China. It shows how the different political positions (New Left, liberalist, conservative) relate to the different stances adopted before Western authors, and focuses in particular on the reception of Carl Schmitt and Leo Strauss in China’s academic and cultural circles. Second, it provides an account of what might be contemporary Chinese (...)

This ground-breaking book considers current perspectives on special education reform in the Asia-Pacific region. It has a major focus on a new era of special education, and how this relates to education reform towards inclusive education. With major changes being proposed under current educational reform and confusion as to how to instigate these measures, this book provides ways to better prepare teachers. It is helpfully divided into three different sections of education reform: "Education Reform in the Asia-Pacific region" reviews broad (...)

Discussion on Scientificaion of Acupuncture in Hong Kong in 1950s: With Special Reference to Zhu Lian's The New Acupuncture.Ka-Wai Fan - 2011 - Asian Culture and History 3 (2):p2.
Influential in shaping the practice of Chinese medicine, acupuncture is an ancient form of healing based on theories of traditional medicine. The clashes between western science and traditional knowledge have ushered Chinese medicine into a new era, so has acupuncture. The major challenges facing researchers are whether it is feasible to scientificize acupuncture and how to do so if feasible. Causing unprecedented responses at home and abroad, the publication of The New Acupuncture ( Xin zhenjiu xue ???? ) by Zhu (...)

This study examines the methods students use to cheat on class examinations and suggests ways of deterring using an international sample from Australia, China, Ireland, and the United States. We also examine the level of cheating and reasons for cheating that prior research has highlighted as a method of demonstrating that our sample is equivalent to those in prior studies. Our results confirm the results of prior research that primarily employs students from the United States. The data indicate that actions (...)

Hypergraph Regularized Discriminative Nonnegative Matrix Factorization on Sample Classification and Co-Differentially Expressed Gene Selection.Yong-Jing Hao, Ying-Lian Gao, Mi-Xiao Hou, Ling-Yun Dai & Jin-Xing Liu - 2019 - Complexity 2019:1-12.
Nonnegative Matrix Factorization is a significant big data analysis technique. However, standard NMF regularized by simple graph does not have discriminative function, and traditional graph models cannot accurately reflect the problem of multigeometry information between data. To solve the above problem, this paper proposed a new method called Hypergraph Regularized Discriminative Nonnegative Matrix Factorization, which captures intrinsic geometry by constructing hypergraphs rather than simple graphs. The introduction of the hypergraph method allows high-order relationships between samples to be considered, and the (...)

Guanxi-Building in the Workplace: A Dynamic Process Model of Working and Backdoor Guanxi. [REVIEW]Olwen Bedford - 2011 - Journal of Business Ethics 104 (1):149-158.
Guanxi is a complex construct of Chinese social interaction. Previous studies have focused on implications of guanxi for business outcomes; few have examined guanxi development, which is the purpose of this study. Two theoretical modes of dynamic guanxi processes in the workplace are proposed: working guanxi and backdoor guanxi . The two modes differ in frequency of interaction, frequency of exchange of favors, and how clear the parties are on what each stands to gain from a particular interaction. Although face (...)

Stock Option Repricing: Heads I Win, Tails You Lose. [REVIEW]Avinash Arya & Huey-Lian Sun - 2004 - Journal of Business Ethics 50 (4):297-312.
Recent scandals at Enron, WorldCom and Global Crossing have put the ethical spotlight on corporate malfeasance as never before. However, these are the situations in which management knew that they made the wrong choice. As professor Joseph Badaracco of Harvard Business School points out, the real ethical dilemmas arise when people must choose between right and right — where both choices can be justified, yet one must be chosen over the other. Whether or not to reprice stock options represents one (...)

Where Should the Line Be Drawn on Insider Trading Ethics?Yulong Ma & Huey-Lian Sun - 1998 - Journal of Business Ethics 17 (1):67-75.
Finance ethics have drawn increasing attention from both government regulators and academic researchers. This paper addresses the issue of insider trading ethics. Previous studies on insider trading ethics have failed to provide convincing arguments and consistent results. In particular, the arguments against insider trading are based primarily on moral and philosophical grounds and lack empirical rigor. This study intends to establish and examine the relationship between the ethical issue and economic issue of insider trading. We argue that the ethics of (...)

Successful technologies’ ubiquity changes uses, users and ethicolegal responsibilities and duties of care. We focus on dementia to review critically ethicolegal implications of increasing use of social networking sites (SNS) by those with compromised decision-making capacity, assessing concerned parties’ responsibilities. Although SNS contracts assume ongoing decision-making capacity, many users’ may be compromised or declining. Resulting ethicolegal issues include capacity to give informed consent to contracts, protection of online privacy including sharing and controlling data, data leaks between different digital platforms, and (...)

Zhuangzi the Poet: Re-Reading the Peng Bird Image.Lian Xinda - 2009 - Dao: A Journal of Comparative Philosophy 8 (3):233-254.
The image of the Peng bird, which opens the Zhuangzi text, is not the product of metaphysical reasoning. An inspiring example of soaring up and going beyond, the image is used to broaden the outlook of the small mind; its function is thus more therapeutic than instructional. With its rich poetic and experiential content, the image of the Peng refuses to be reduced to an abstract concept, or a mere signifier of certain philosophical position. Misreading of the image results from (...)

The Aesthetics of Inscape: Teaching Chinese Art with Barthesian Semiotic Theory.Lian Duan - 2019 - Journal of Aesthetic Education 53 (1):78.
As a general concept, aesthetic education and art education are connected; to a certain extent, the two can be taken as one or two sides of the same coin. However, the specific questions involved are how they are connected and how to connect them in teaching practice. To answer these questions, I define aesthetic education as more general and theoretical and define art education as less general and more practical, that is, teaching students to read art works. Exploring the answers (...)

The design game was played by seventeen teams of chemical engineering students, with each team having to arrange pieces of colored paper to produce two letters each. Before the end of the game, additional constraints were introduced to the teams such that they faced similar ambiguity in the technical facts that the engineers involved (...)
