  10. Love Matches: Heteronormativity, Modernity, and AIDS Prevention in Malawi.Anne W. Esacove - 2010 - Gender and Society 24 (1):83-109.
This article identifies the dominant public narrative of AIDS in Malawi through an analysis of qualitative interview data and policy and intervention materials. The public narrative creates distinctions between “risky” and “healthy” sex that organize HIV prevention efforts around moral categories, rather than relative risk. These distinctions oppose images of backward, ignorant villagers to the protective power of “love matches”. The analysis demonstrates that the public narrative and corresponding prevention efforts only make sense in connection with the patently false assumption (...)

A Discerning Smell: Olfaction Among the Senses in St. Bonaventure's Long Life of St. Francis.Ann W. Astell - 2009 - Franciscan Studies 67:91-131.
In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:The fifth chapter of Saint Bonaventure's Long Life of Saint Francis, the Legenda maior , is a veritable blazon of the body of Francis and its senses, physical and spiritual. The first chapter in the so-called "Inner Life" – the sequence of eight chapters on the virtues of St. Francis – Chapter Five is notable for its insistent focus on sensory experience, due both to Francis's physical mortifications and (...)

Challenged to respond to Nazi heresy and to offer practical assistance to persecuted Jews, Christians who were caught in the crucible of the Third Reich learned to read the Bible differently. After Auschwitz, we are still learning from their example.

This collection of essays focuses on sacrifice in the context of Jewish and Christian scripture and is inspired by the thought and writings of Rene Girard. The contributors engage in a dialogue with Girard in their search for answers to key questions about the relation between religion and violence. The book is divided into two parts. The first opens with a conversation in which Rene Girard and Sandor Goodhart explore the relation between imitation and violence throughout human history, especially in (...)

  22. Where Ethics and Aesthetics Meet: Titian's Rape of Europa.A. W. Eaton - 2003 - Hypatia 18 (4):159 - 188.
Titian's Rape of Europa is highly praised for its luminous colors and sensual textures. But the painting has an overlooked dark side, namely that it eroticizes rape. I argue that this is an ethical defect that diminishes the painting aesthetically. This argument-that an artwork can be worse off qua work of art precisely because it is somehow ethically problematic-demonstrates that feminist concerns about art can play a legitimate role in art criticism and aesthetic appreciation.

How do artifacts get their functions? It is typically thought that an artifact’s function depends on its maker’s intentions. This chapter argues that this common understanding is fatally flawed. Nor can artifact function be understood in terms of current uses or capacities. Instead, it proposes that we understand artifact function on the etiological model that Ruth Millikan and others have proposed for the biological realm. This model offers a robustly normative conception of function, but it does so naturalistically by employing (...)

Very little has been done to find out what corporations have done to build ethical values into their organizations. In this report on a survey of 1984 Fortune 1000 industrial and service companies the Center for Business Ethics reveals some facts regarding codes of ethics, ethics committees, social audits, ethics training programs, boards of directors, and other areas where corporations might institutionalize ethics. Based on the survey, the Center for Business Ethics is convinced that corporations are beginning to take steps (...)

Pedro Almodóvar is one of the most renowned film directors of recent years. Talk to Her is one of the most discussed and controversial of all his films. Dealing principally with the issue of rape, it also offers profound insights into the nature of love and friendship whilst raising important philosophical and moral questions in unsettling and often paradoxical ways. This is the first book to explore and address the philosophical aspects of Almodóvar’s film. Opening with a helpful introduction by (...)

Reservoir Characterization Using Microseismic Facies Analysis Integrated with Surface Seismic Attributes.Aamir Rafiq, David W. Eaton, Adrienne McDougall & Per Kent Pedersen - 2016 - Interpretation: SEG 4 (2):T167-T181.
We have developed the concept of microseismic facies analysis, a method that facilitates partitioning of an unconventional reservoir into distinct facies units on the basis of their microseismic response along with integrated interpretation of microseismic observations with 3D seismic data. It is based upon proposed links between magnitude-frequency distributions and scaling properties of reservoirs, including the effects of mechanical bed thickness and stress heterogeneity. We evaluated the method using data from hydraulic fracture monitoring of a Late Cretaceous tight sand reservoir (...)

We have developed an interpretive seismic workflow that incorporates multicomponent seismic inversion, guided by structural mapping, for characterizing low-permeability unconventional reservoirs. The workflow includes the determination of a calibrated time-depth relationship, generation of seismic-derived structural maps, poststack inversion, amplitude-variation-with-offset analysis, and PP-PS joint inversion. The subsequent interpretation procedure combines structural and inversion results with seismic-derived lithologic parameters, such as the Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, and brittleness index. We applied this workflow to a 3D multicomponent seismic data set from the Duvernay (...)

Identifying and characterizing geomechanical domains is important for understanding how a reservoir will respond to hydraulic fracturing, including interaction with natural fractures to create new permeable pathways. We have used a rock-mass characterization approach, which describes the mechanical reservoir package by combining parameters of the intact rock, such as brittleness, with inferred geometry and density of natural fractures. Insights from outcrop observations are important to complement the interpretation of fracture geometry and density derived from subsurface data, to give a more (...)

Community initiatives to create more localized food systems ofteninclude the strategy of import substitution, i.e., increasing local foodproduction for local consumption. The purpose of this policy iseffectively to supplant some level of imported food into the region. Weargue that such action can carry social and environmental risks as wellas benefits and we have developed research parameters to measure theimpact of such strategies.
