  1. Negotiation and Aristotle's Rhetoric: Truth Over Interests?Alexios Arvanitis & Antonis Karampatzos - 2011 - Philosophical Psychology 24 (6):845 - 860.
Negotiation research primarily focuses on negotiators? interests in order to understand negotiation and offer advice about the prospective outcome. Win-win outcomes, i.e., outcomes that serve the interests of all negotiating parties, have been established and promoted as the ultimate goal for any negotiation situation. We offer a perspective that draws on Aristotle's philosophical program and discuss how the outcome is not defined by the parties? interests, but by the intersubjective validity of claims, which can essentially be treated as representative of (...)

Negotiation as an Intersubjective Process: Creating and Validating Claim-Rights.Alexios Arvanitis & Antonis Karampatzos - 2013 - Philosophical Psychology 26 (1):89-108.
Negotiation is mainly treated as a process through which counterparts try to satisfy their conflicting interests. This traditional, subjective approach focuses on the interests-based relation between subjects and the resources which are on the bargaining table; negotiation is viewed as a series of joint decisions regarding the relation of each subject to the negotiated resources. In this paper, we will attempt to outline an intersubjective perspective that focuses on the communication-based relation among subjects, a relation that is founded upon communicative (...)

Individual Differences in the Acceptability of Unethical Information Technology Practices: The Case of Machiavellianism and Ethical Ideology.Susan Winter, Antonis Stylianou & Robert Giacalone - 2004 - Journal of Business Ethics 54 (3):275-296.
While information technologies present organizations with opportunities to become more competitive, unsettled social norms and lagging legislation guiding the use of these technologies present organizations and individuals with ethical dilemmas. This paper presents two studies investigating the relationship between intellectual property and privacy attitudes, Machiavellianism and Ethical Ideology, and working in R&D and computer literacy in the form of programming experience. In Study 1, Machiavellians believed it was more acceptable to ignore the intellectual property and privacy rights of others. Programmers (...)

Replacing Epiphenomenalism: A Pluralistic Enactive Take on the Metaplasticity of Early Body Ornamentation.Duilio Garofoli & Antonis Iliopoulos - forthcoming - Philosophy and Technology:1-28.
In the domain of evolutionary cognitive archaeology, the early body ornaments from the Middle Stone Age/Palaeolithic are generally treated as mere by-products of an evolved brain-bound cognitive architecture selected to cope with looming social problems. Such adaptive artefacts are therefore taken to have been but passive means of broadcasting a priori envisaged meanings, essentially playing a neutral role for the human mind. In contrast to this epiphenomenalist view of material culture, postphenomenology and the Material Engagement Theory have been making a (...)

On Argumentation Logic and Propositional Logic.Antonis C. Kakas, Paolo Mancarella & Francesca Toni - 2018 - Studia Logica 106 (2):237-279.
This paper studies the relationship between Argumentation Logic, a recently defined logic based on the study of argumentation in AI, and classical Propositional Logic. In particular, it shows that AL and PL are logically equivalent in that they have the same entailment relation from any given classically consistent theory. This equivalence follows from a correspondence between the non-acceptability of sentences in AL and Natural Deduction proofs of the complement of these sentences. The proof of this equivalence uses a restricted form (...)

Understanding the Behavioral Intention to Report Unethical Information Technology Practices: The Role of Machiavellianism, Gender, and Computer Expertise. [REVIEW]Antonis C. Stylianou, Susan Winter, Yuan Niu, Robert A. Giacalone & Matt Campbell - 2013 - Journal of Business Ethics 117 (2):333-343.
Although organizations can derive competitive advantage from developing and implementing information systems, they are confronted with a rising number of unethical information practices. Because end-users and computer experts are the conduit to an ethical organizational environment, their intention to report unethical IT-related practices plays a critical role in protecting intellectual property and privacy rights. Using the survey methodology, this article investigates the relationship between willingness to report intellectual property and privacy violations and Machiavellianism, gender and computer literacy in the form (...)

Material Engagement Theory and its Philosophical Ties to Pragmatism.Antonis Iliopoulos - 2019 - Phenomenology and the Cognitive Sciences 18 (1):39-63.
Material Engagement Theory is currently driving a conceptual change in the archaeology of mind. Drawing upon the dictates of enactivism and active externalism, it specifically calls for a radical reconceptualization of mind and material culture. Unpersuaded by the common assumption that cognition is brain-bound, Malafouris argues in favour of a process ontology that situates thinking in action. In granting ontological primacy to material engagement, MET seeks to illuminate the emergence of human ways of thinking through the practical effects of the (...)

An Overview of Corporate Social Responsibility in Greece: Perceptions, Developments and Barriers to Overcome.Antonis Skouloudis, Konstantinos Evangelinos, Ioannis Nikolaou & Walter Leal Filho - 2011 - Business Ethics 20 (2):205-226.
The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in Greece and present the challenges that need to be met in order to further promote socially responsible business behaviour in the domestic economy. This is the first attempt to provide a systematic analysis of CSR in Greece and adds to the existing pool of knowledge of CSR embeddedness in countries where CSR awareness is still rather low, a literature field that is still quite limited. (...)

Factories, Utopias, Decoration and Upholstery: On Utopia, Modernism, and Everyday Life.Antonis Balasopoulos - 2014 - Utopian Studies 25 (2):268-298.
To the extent that the nature of the relationship between utopian and modernist fiction has preoccupied literary history at all, such reflection has tended to be overshadowed by the devastating irony with which Virginia Woolf treats the fiction of H. G. Wells, among other prominent writers of the so-called Edwardian period. In two interrelated essays originally published between 1923 and 1924—“Mr Bennett and Mrs Brown” and “ Character in Fiction”—Woolf inverts Arnold Bennett’s pejorative estimation of the modernists’ novelistic craft by (...)

Exogenously Driven CSR: Insights From the Consultants' Perspective.Antonis Skouloudis & Konstantinos Evangelinos - 2014 - Business Ethics: A European Review 23 (3):258-271.
This paper offers insights into corporate social responsibility (CSR) consulting in Greece. It sheds light on perspectives of how socially responsible business conduct is shaped by consultancies in a national business environment where such an essential aspect of organizational commitment and behavior exhibits comparatively little resonance among companies and is primarily induced by supranational and international policy schemes as well as foreign competitors. Drawing from long interviews with consulting professionals, we explore key topics: the domestic CSR (consulting) industry's characteristics, issues (...)

Structural Biology of the HEAT‐Like Repeat Family of DNA Glycosylases.Rongxin Shi, Xing‐Xing Shen, Antonis Rokas & Brandt F. Eichman - 2018 - Bioessays 40 (11):1800133.
DNA glycosylases remove aberrant DNA nucleobases as the first enzymatic step of the base excision repair (BER) pathway. The alkyl‐DNA glycosylases AlkC and AlkD adopt a unique structure based on α‐helical HEAT repeats. Both enzymes identify and excise their substrates without a base‐flipping mechanism used by other glycosylases and nucleic acid processing proteins to access nucleobases that are otherwise stacked inside the double‐helix. Consequently, these glycosylases act on a variety of cationic nucleobase modifications, including bulky adducts, not previously associated with (...)

[Aristot.] Ath. Pol. 39.4: Wer Durfte Im Oligarchischen Eleusis Wohnen ?Antonis Tsakmakis - 2018 - Klio 100 (1):55-69.

    Tlön: Journey to a Utopian Civilisation by Aristidis G. Romanos.Antonis Balasopoulos - 2017 - Utopian Studies 28 (2):354-361.
That utopia as a literary genre has suffered death, attenuation, transmutation, or dystopic inversion not too long ago, and at any rate by the last quarter of the twentieth century, is a widespread and well-established view among most of the critical thinkers in utopian studies. In his most recent foray on the subject, Fredric Jameson begins his "An American Utopia" by observing that "we have seen a marked diminution in the production of new utopias over the last decades," particularly after (...)

Utopian Geographies and the Early English Novel by Jason H. Pearl.Balasopoulos Antonis - 2016 - Utopian Studies 27 (3):640-645.
Despite its relatively small size, Jason Pearl’s Utopian Geographies and the Early English Novel aspires to tell a big and quite compelling story. This story is framed by the transition, followed here with a particular focus on English literature, from utopias, travel-framed descriptions of avowedly better social, political, and cultural arrangements and institutions, to euchronias, visions of improved worlds made possible by the secular course of historical progress. As it turns out—at least that is the story Pearl wishes to tell—between (...)

Hythlodaeus’s suspicion that the Utopians were originally Greeks reflects,1 as is well known, Thomas More’s own abiding love of the language2—to which, as Erasmus would inform Ulrich van Hutten, he had devoted his young years3—and the plethora of Greek puns with which he embellished his imaginary island, its administrative apparatus, and the peoples his narrator describes besides the Utopians. Hythlodaeus himself is instrumental in inspiring the Utopians with admiration for “the literature and learning of the Greeks.” Thanks to him, the (...)

To articulate the past historically … means to seize hold of a memory as it flashes up at a moment of danger. On the face of it, the quincentennial of Thomas More’s Utopia arrives at a time dramatically inappropriate for celebrations of the actuality of its vision. Consider what seems to be a new stage in the long global economic crisis, just as much as it is an indication of the intensification of imperialist aggression following in its wake: the dramatic swelling (...)

The Infinite-Valued Semantics: Overview, Recent Results and Future Directions.Panos Rondogiannis & Antonis Troumpoukis - 2013 - Journal of Applied Non-Classical Logics 23 (1-2):213-228.
The infinite-valued semantics was introduced in Rondogiannis and Wadge (2005) as a purely logical way for capturing the meaning of well-founded negation in logic programming. The purpose of this paper is threefold: first, to give a non-technical introduction to the infinite-valued semantics; second, to discuss the applicability of the infinite-valued approach to syntactically richer extensions of logic programming; and third, to present the main open problems whose resolution would further enhance the applicability of the technique.

In our article in Utopian Studies, “‘Suspicor enim eam gentem a graecis originem duxisse’: Translating Utopia in Greek,”1 Vasso Yannakopoulou and I had occasion to remark on the striking belatedness of the reception of Thomas More’s work and to briefly speculate on potential reasons for it. At the same time, however, the evidence is that the last two decades, and particularly the period after the rapid and well-nigh devastating escalation of the economic crisis, have witnessed a significant boost as regards (...)
