Defending Scientific Freedom and Democracy: The Genetics Society of America’s Response to Lysenko.Rena Selya - 2012 - Journal of the History of Biology 45 (3):415-442.
In the late 1940s and early 1950s, the leaders of the Genetics Society of America struggled to find an appropriate group response to Trofim Lysenko’s scientific claims and the Soviet treatment of geneticists. Although some of the leaders of the GSA favored a swift, critical response, procedural and ideological obstacles prevented them from following this path. Concerned about establishing scientific orthodoxy on one hand and politicizing the content of their science on the other, these American geneticists drew on democratic language (...)

Spiral Model of Phronesis Development: Social-Emotional and Character Development in Low-Resourced Urban Schools.Danielle R. Hatchimonji, Arielle C. V. Linsky, Samuel J. Nayman & Maurice J. Elias - 2020 - Journal of Moral Education 49 (1):129-142.
ABSTRACTThe highest form of virtuous behavior in the Aristotelian virtue ethics approach to character education involves practical wisdom, or phronesis, which allows an individual to act in the right way about the right things for the right reasons. Here, we use our experiences with social-emotional and character development in low-resourced urban middle schools to put forth a Spiral Model of Phronesis Development. We aim to contextualize phronesis development to reflect the realities of students of color attending low-resourced urban schools and (...)

Psychopaths Show Enhanced Amygdala Activation During Fear Conditioning.Douglas H. Schultz, Nicholas L. Balderston, Arielle R. Baskin-Sommers, Christine L. Larson & Fred J. Helmstetter - 2016 - Frontiers in Psychology 7.
Psychopathy is a personality disorder characterized by emotional deficits and a failure to inhibit impulsive behavior and is often subdivided into “primary” and “secondary” psychopathic subtypes. The maladaptive behavior related to primary psychopathy is thought to reflect constitutional “fearlessness,” while the problematic behavior related to secondary psychopathy is motivated by other factors. The fearlessness observed in psychopathy has often been interpreted as reflecting a fundamental deficit in amygdala function, and previous studies have provided support for a low-fear model of psychopathy. 21. The Media Depiction of Women Who Opt Out.Pamela Stone & Arielle Kuperberg - 2008 - Gender and Society 22 (4):497-517.
Through a content analysis of print media and a comparison of media images with trends in women's behavior, the authors explore the rhetoric and reality surrounding the exit of college-educated women from the workforce to become full-time mothers, a phenomenon that has been dubbed “opting out.” The major imagery surrounding opting out emphasizes motherhood and family, elites, and choice. A close reading reveals some inconsistencies that counter the prevailing positive depiction. The authors also find that media coverage of opting out (...)

Doctoral supervision has been described as a complex (...)
