It has been claimed that the ability to remember the past and the ability to project oneself into the future are intimately related. We sought support for this proposition by examining whether individual differences in dimensions that have been shown to affect memory for past events similarly influence the experience of projecting oneself into the future. We found that individuals with a higher capacity for visual imagery experienced more visual and other sensory details both when remembering past events and when (...) imagining future events. In addition, individuals who habitually use suppression to regulate their emotions experienced fewer sensory, contextual, and emotional details when representing both past and future events, while the use of reappraisal had no effect on either kind of events. These findings are consistent with the view that mental time travel into the past and into the future relies on similar mechanisms. (shrink)

Recent findings suggest that multiple event properties contribute to shape the phenomenology of episodic future thoughts, but the specific role of each property is not yet fully understood. This study shows that different phenomenological features are predicted by distinct event properties. The vividness of an episodic future thought largely depends on the familiarity of its constitutive elements , while the visual perspective adopted is instead related to the temporal distance of the imagined event. Cognitive feelings such as the sense of (...) pre-experiencing the future depend on sensory–perceptual qualities, and are further modulated by the personal importance attributed to the event. These findings suggest that the essence of episodic future thought—the sensation of mentally visiting one’s personal future—lies, in part, in the relevance of imagined events with respect to personal goals. Previous research has shown that the content and frequency of mind-wandering episodes—the occurrence of thoughts that are both stimulus-independent and task-unrelated—are closely related to an individual’s future-related concerns. Whether this relationship is shaped by the affective changes that are usually associated with future-related concerns still remains unclear, however. In this study, we induced the anticipation of a negatively valenced event and examined whether the ensuing affective changes were related to the occurrence and content of mind-wandering during an unrelated attentional task. (...) We found that the increase in negative affect following concern induction predicted the general frequency of mind-wandering episodes. Furthermore, mind-wandering episodes specifically directed at the induced concern were related to a lower decrease in negative affect during the attentional task. These results suggest that the negative emotional impact of future-related concerns is an important factor to be taken into consideration for the subsequent occurrence of mind-wandering episodes, which might in turn be involved in the maintenance of negative affect over time. The results indicated that patients’ narratives were less coherent and elaborate than those of controls. Schizophrenia patients were severely impaired in the ability to make connections with the self and extract meaning from their memories, which significantly correlated with illness duration. In agreement with earlier research, patients exhibited an early reminiscence bump. Moreover, the period of the reminiscence (...) bump, which is highly relevant for identity development, was characterized by fewer achievements and more life-threatening event experiences, compared with controls. A negative correlation was found between negative symptoms, number of self-event connections and specificity of narratives. Our results suggest that schizophrenia patients have difficulties to organize and extract meaning from their past experiences in order to create coherent personal narratives. (shrink)

We consider three possible reasons why humans might accord a privileged status to emotional information when mentally traveling backward or forward in time. First, mental simulation of emotional situations helps one to make adaptive decisions. Second, it can serve an emotion regulation function. Third, it helps people to construct and maintain a positive view of the self.

As humans, we frequently engage in mental time travel, reliving past experiences and imagining possible future events. This study examined whether similar factors affect the subjective experience associated with remembering the past and imagining the future. Participants mentally “re-experienced” or “pre-experienced” positive and negative events that differed in their temporal distance from the present , and then rated the phenomenal characteristics associated with their representations. For both past and future, representations of positive events were associated with a greater feeling of (...) re-experiencing than representations of negative events. In addition, representations of temporally close events contained more sensorial and contextual details, and generated a stronger feeling of re-experiencing than representations of temporally distant events. It is suggested that the way we both remember our past and imagine our future is constrained by our current goals. (shrink)

In 1952, Heinrich Scholz published a question in The Journal of Symbolic Logic asking for a characterization of spectra, i.e., sets of natural numbers that are the cardinalities of finite models of first order sentences. Günter Asser in turn asked whether the complement of a spectrum is always a spectrum. These innocent questions turned out to be seminal for the development of finite model theory and descriptive complexity. In this paper we survey developments over the last 50-odd years pertaining to (...) the spectrum problem. Our presentation follows conceptual developments rather than the chronological order. Originally a number theoretic problem, it has been approached by means of recursion theory, resource bounded complexity theory, classification by complexity of the defining sentences, and finally by means of structural graph theory. Although Scholz' question was answered in various ways, Asser's question remains open. (shrink)

Ce texte entend montrer les enjeux en termes de protection des données personnelles de l'accès au service WHOIS. Avec la création massive de nouveaux noms de domaines rendue possible par la migration des serveurs racines vers IPv6, la question de l'accès au WHOIS devient critique. Une régulation tendant à mieux assurer la protection des données personnelles est à envisager dans un autre contexte, l'Icann ne souhaitant pas la mettre en place. Mieux vaut se replier sur les noms de domaines contrôlés (...) par les organismes respectant les directives européennes, à l'image de ce que pratique l'Afnic, assurant la protection des données personnelles des propriétaires des noms de domaine tout en permettant d'y avoir accès dans des conditions bien spécifiées.This paper aims to show what is at stake in terms of data protection with access to the WHOIS service. With the exponential growth ofTLDs offered by the migration of root servers to IPv6, access to WHOIS has become a critical issue. A regulation to ensure better protection of personal data needs to be envisaged in a different context, since ICANN does not wish to implement it. A better option would be to use TLDs under the control of organisations that abide by EU rules, as AFNIC is doing by protecting the personal data of domain name owners while allowing access to them under specified conditions. L'usage du terme «événement» recouvre plusieurs réalités. L'objectif de cet article est de confronter l'usage que les médias en font, avec ce que les chercheurs en sciences sociales en retiennent. Pour les journalistes, l'événement c'est un fait remarquable méritant un traitement spécial qui le mette en valeur. Pour les sciences sociales, il s'agit d'un phénomène qui est vécu comme rupture, par une société ou un collectif, et qui enclenche donc une recherche d'intelligibilité. Les deux logiques sont-elles amenées à se rencontrer? (...) Tout événement est-il reconnu et traité comme événement médiatique ou pas? Et inversement? Pour répondre à ces questions, cet article cerne les conditions d'émergence médiatique d'un événement à l'échelle internationale, ce que nous appelons la lecture événementielle des faits. Quatre conditions sont retenues: les critères d'intensité émotionnelle; l'accès au terrain et l'existence d'acteurs sociaux à même de fournir une interprétation événementielle; la possibilité de réencodage culturel des faits; le degré de concurrence avec d'autres faits éligibles au rang d'événement. Des schémas tentent de fournir une synthèse des cas de figure rencontrés.The use of the term "event" covers several realities. The objective of this paper is to compare the use that the media are, with what social scientists hold. For journalists, the event is a remarkable fact deserving special treatment that emphasizes it. In the social sciences, it is a phenomenon that is experienced as a rupture, a company or a group, and then clicks a search for intelligibility. The two logics are brought to meet them? Any event it is recognized and treated as a media event or not? And vice versa? To answer these questions, this article identifies the conditions for the emergence of a media event at the international level, what we call the event reading of the facts. Four conditions were used: the criteria of emotional intensity, access to land and the existence of social actors able to provide an interpretation event, the possibility of re-encoding cultural facts, the degree of competition with other facts eligible for ranking event. Chacun revient dans la maison de son enfance à cette occasion alors que la mère est atteinte d’une maladie orpheline qui la condamne à court terme et que le frère aîné, Henri est haï par sa sœur et banni de la famille depuis cinq années. L’article analyse ce film où les rapports de genre, s’ils (...) sont constitutifs des relations, n’en restent pas moins soumis au dispositif plus large de la névrose familiale. Il tente de montrer comment le cinéma traduit la complexité des affects et les contradictions tendres et brutales des rapports familiaux. (shrink)

Au livre V de l'Éthique à Nicomaque, Aristote ne donne pas une définition unifiée de la justice. Tout en ne rejetant pas la définition traditionnelle qui identifie la véritable justice et la justice légale, ni celle qui repose sur la justice naturelle et fonde la notion d'équité, il cherche de nouvelles assises pour la justice institutionnelle et c'est la notion d'égalité qui sert à cette fin. Cet article vise à préciser les notions de stricte égalité et d'égalité proportionnelle et corrélativement (...) à analyser les définitions des justices distributive et directive qui constituent les branches de la justice particulière chez Aristote.In the Fifth Book of the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle does not give one unified definition of justice. He does not reject the traditional definition of legal justice nor the definition of natural justice which is necessary to dread the idea of equity. However, he wants to ground institutional justice on a new base and the idea of equality serves this end. In this paper, I want to make clear the difference between strict and proportional equality and correlatively to analyse the definitions of distributive and "directive" justices which form the two branches of the aristotelian particular justice. Les «liturgies d’État» sont de grandes cérémonies dans lesquelles se mêlent des dimensions politiques et religieuses. Ces liturgies mettent en oeuvre une ritualité complexe, alliant des intérêts collectifs et particuliers. Elles présentent un double intérêt pour la recherche en théologie pratique: d’une part comme reflet d’une société, d’autre part comme modèle pour les membres de cette société. Le couronnement de Napoléon a ouvert une nouvelle ère dans ce domaine de ritualité publique, en quelque sorte une porte d’entrée dans la modernité. (...) La fin de cette époque correspondrait aux doubles funérailles du président Mitterrand . Celles-ci sont significatives d’une ritualité propre à l’ultramodernité, marquée par le primat accordé à la réalisation de soi et le décloisonnement des espaces. La ritualité catholique se trouve dorénavant en tension entre son objectivité propre d’une part et le subjectivisme et la pluralité propres à l’ultramodernité d’autre part, tension se manifestant dans la liturgie par le phénomène de l’ultrapersonnalisation. The text focuses on reflecting on the role of modern university in a man intellectual development, starting from Nietzsche’s ideas. By drawing up some of the main methodological and philosophical concepts of the German philosopher, the text highlights a series of aspects on the Humboldian nature of current universities – a state of tension under the political, economic and social factors. Thus, the classic concepts of Bildung and Kultur specific to the XIX-century University are analyzed in relation with the crisis (...) that marked the Prussian state of Bismarck period. Higher education being available to the masses is a current problem Nietzsche didn’t avoid to call „savageness” and „decline” of the higher educational system. The purpose of the text is to point out if Nietzsche’s ideas can be still applied nowadays. (shrink)

ABSTRACT : This paper contributes to explor the historical background of contemporary conceptualism. It suggests that a step forward toward a more promising understanding of this historical background can be made if we focus, not on the much-discussed, controversial position of Kant, but rather on the straightforward position of some main representatives of classical neo-Kantianism. My main hypothesis is that criticisms of Kant’s transcendantal aesthetics coming from Paul Natorp and Bruno Bauch may be regarded as a significant historical source for (...) the so-called “content” conceptualism, insofar as they imply that the contents of perception are conceptual contents. Au-delà de l’utilité pratique du costume, qui peut faire débat, policiers et gendarmes affichent une prestance militaire qui renforce leur prestige. Mais ils montrent aussi qu’ils travaillent en toute transparence, en assumant leurs actes et en se plaçant au service du public. Ils prouvent enfin leur valeur en engageant des dépenses vestimentaires qui deviennent un gage (...) de respectabilité. S’il constitue un enjeu symbolique fort, l’uniforme évolue dans le sens d’une plus grande simplicité fonctionnelle au cours du xixe siècle, s’adaptant dans une certaine mesure à la mode masculine.
