Human Inbreeding Avoidance: Culture in Nature.Pierre L. van den Berghe - 1983 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 6 (1):91-102.
Much clinical and ethnographic evidence suggests that humans, like many other organisms, are selected to avoid close inbreeding because of the fitness costs of inbreeding depression. The proximate mechanism of human inbreeding avoidance seems to be precultural, and to involve the interaction of genetic predispositions and environmental conditions. As first suggested by E. Westermarck, and supported by evidence from Israeli kibbutzim, Chinese sim-pua marriage, and much convergent ethnographic and clinical evidence, humans negatively imprint on intimate associates during a critical period (...)

    Flemish Palliative-Care Nurses' Attitudes to Palliative Sedation: A Quantitative Study.J. Gielen, S. Van den Branden, T. Van Iersel & B. Broeckaert - 2012 - Nursing Ethics 19 (5):692-704.
Palliative sedation is an option of last resort to control refractory suffering. In order to better understand palliative-care nurses’ attitudes to palliative sedation, an anonymous questionnaire was sent to all nurses (589) employed in palliative care in Flanders (Belgium). In all, 70.5% of the nurses (n = 415) responded. A large majority did not agree that euthanasia is preferable to palliative sedation, were against non-voluntary euthanasia in the case of a deeply and continuously sedated patient and considered it generally better (...)

What is on Our Children’s Minds? An Analysis of Children’s Writings as Reflections of Group‐Specific Socialisation Practices.Eddie Denessen, Lisette Hornstra & Linda van den Bergh - 2010 - Educational Studies 36 (1):73-84.
In the present study it has been examined how children?s creative writing tasks may contribute to teachers? understanding of children?s values. Writings of 300 elementary school children about what they would do if they were the boss of The Netherlands were obtained and seemed to reflect different types of values. Most children were concerned with charity. Also, writings concerned materialist values and socio?political topics, such as human rights, power and tolerance. Analyses of group?specific differences showed girls to write more about (...)

Feedback During Active Learning: Elementary School Teachers' Beliefs and Perceived Problems.Linda van den Bergh, Anje Ros & Douwe Beijaard - 2013 - Educational Studies 39 (4):418-430.
Giving feedback during active learning is an important, though difficult, task for teachers. In the present study, the problems elementary school teachers perceive and the beliefs they hold regarding this task were investigated. It appeared that teachers believe conditional teacher skills, especially time management, hinder them most from giving good feedback. The most widely held belief was that ?feedback should be positive?. Teachers also believed that it is important to adopt a facilitative way of giving feedback, but they found this (...)

Sexual Selection and Social Roles: Two Models or One?Pierre L. van den Berghe - 2009 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 32 (3-4):291-292.
Nothing is gained by opposing and or by proclaiming the supremacy of one over the other. Instead, we should develop a unitary model of gene-culture coevolution, allowing for the complex interaction of both, and varying importance of each, all within our double, species-specific, adaptive, evolutionary track.

    Cruelty, Age, and Thanatourism.Pierre L. van den Berghe - 2006 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 29 (3):245-245.
Two areas of research for testing Nell's theory are suggested. One is cruelty's seemingly negative correlation with age, which would confirm its linkage with testosterone, sex, and dominance. The other is the special field of leisure activity called thanatourism, that is, the transformation of loci of human horror into tourist attractions.

  34. Just as They Expected: How Parents' Expectations About Their Unborn Child's Characteristics Provide a Context for Early Transactions Between Parenting and Child Temperament.Alithe L. Van den Akker, Mirjana Majdandzic, Wieke de Vente, Jessica J. Asscher & Susan Bögels - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Prenatal expectations about what children will be like after birth may provide a context for how parents perceive their infant's actual temperament. We examined how these expectations and perceptions are associated and together predict early parenting behavior, with parenting behavior in turn predicting changes in temperament. Reports of 125 families about their expectations of their unborn child's temperament, their infant's temperament at 4 and 12 months post-partum, and their hostile, responsive, warm, and overprotective parenting were included. We also included data (...)

The Homeopathy of Kin Selection: An Evaluation of van den Berghe’s Sociobiological Approach to Ethnic Nepotism.Ingo Brigandt - 2001 - Politics and the Life Sciences 20:203–215.
The present discussion of sociobiological approaches to ethnic nepotism takes Pierre van den Berghe ʼs theory as a starting point. Two points, which have not been addressed in former analyses, are considered to be of particular importance. It is argued that the behavioral mechanism of ethnic nepotism—as understood by van den Berghe—cannot explain ethnic boundaries and attitudes. In addition, I show that van den Bergheʼs central premise concerning ethnic nepotism is in contradiction to Hamiltonʼs formula, the essential principle of kin (...)

In this interview with Jan Hendrik van den Berg, the Dutch phenomenologist and psychiatrist addresses the origins of his work, his most significant influences, and the purpose of metabletic phenomenology in the modern age. In the course of the interview. Dr. Van den Berg provides a basic overview of his work, and highlights the central finding of his metabletic analyses: a loss of wonder before nature, which results from the more fundamental loss of genuine spirituality in the modern world.

Contingency Awareness in a Symptom Learning Paradigm: Necessary but Not Sufficient?Stephan Devriese, Winnie Winters, Ilse Van Diest & Omer Van den Bergh - 2004 - Consciousness and Cognition 13 (3):439-452.
In previous studies, we found that bodily symptoms can be learned in a differential conditioning paradigm, using odors as conditioned stimuli and CO2-enriched air as unconditioned stimulus . However, this only occurred when the odor CS had a negative valence , and tended to be more pronounced in persons scoring high for Negative Affectivity . This paper considers the necessity and/or sufficiency of awareness of the CS–US contingency in three studies using this paradigm. The relation between contingency awareness and the (...)
