Professors on the Board: Do They Contribute to Society Outside the Classroom?Charles H. Cho, Jay Heon Jung, Byungjin Kwak, Jaywon Lee & Choong-Yuel Yoo - 2017 - Journal of Business Ethics 141 (2):393-409.
According to our data, 38.5 % of S&P 1500 firms have at least one professor on their boards. Given the lack of research examining the roles and effects of academic faculty as members of boards of directors on corporate outcomes, this study investigates whether firms with professor–directors are more likely to exhibit higher corporate social responsibility performance ratings. Results indicate that firms with professor–directors do exhibit higher CSR performance ratings than those without. However, the influence of professor–directors on firm CSR (...)

  2. Teaching to Unlearn Community in Order to Make a Claim to Community.Duck-Joo Kwak - 2010 - Educational Theory 60 (4):405-417.
In this essay Duck‐Joo Kwak explores a moral perfectionist approach to citizenship education, which is distinct from liberal and communitarian models. One of educational challenges to this approach is how to cultivate our students' sense of membership, which is shaped by a thick sense of the good life, while being not merely compatible with but open to the pluralist perspective. Kwak maintains that what is required for this form of membership to society or community is our future citizens' (...)

The Implications of Arendt's Concept of Judgment for Humanistic Teaching in a Postmetaphysical Age.Duck‐Joo Kwak - 2015 - Educational Theory 65 (6):681-697.
In this essay, Duck-Joo Kwak draws on Hannah Arendt's concept of judgment in exploring what it means to teach the humanities as a form of values education in a postmetaphysical age. Arendt's concept of judgment is closely related to Ciceronian humanism, which is concerned with the wisdom to choose one's company while appreciating this pursuit itself, among men, things, and thoughts from the past and present. According to Arendt, this wisdom as a form of judgment can be generated from (...)

Consumers’ Responses to Public Figures’ Transgression: Moral Reasoning Strategies and Implications for Endorsed Brands.Joon Sung Lee & Dae Hee Kwak - 2016 - Journal of Business Ethics 137 (1):101-113.
Public figures’ transgressions attract considerable media attention and public interest. However, little is understood about the impact of celebrity endorsers’ transgressions on associated brands. Drawing on research on moral reasoning, we posit that consumers are not always motivated to separate judgments of performance from judgments of morality or simply excuse a wrongdoer. We propose that consumers also engage in moral coupling, a distinct moral reasoning process which allows consumers to integrate judgments of performance and judgments of morality. In three studies, (...)

An Ethics of Concrete Others: An Ethics for the Vulnerable in a Globalizing World.Hochul Kwak - 2016 - Journal for the Study of Religions and Ideologies 15 (45):41-75.
This article deals with an ethics of concrete others as an appropriate ethics for the vulnerable in a globalizing world. The concept of concrete others is based on the Levinasian concept of the other in that it accepts the transcendental dimension of others; however, the concept of concrete others is different from the concept of the other because it emphasizes immanent dimensions of human beings and their multiple differences. Because of a globalizing world which makes different vulnerabilities more visible, I (...)

Skepticism and Education: In Search of Another Filial Tie of Philosophy to Education.Duck‐joo Kwak - 2012 - Educational Philosophy and Theory 44 (5):535-545.
As a way of participating in the discussion on the disciplinary nature of philosophy of education, this article attempts to find another distinctive way of relating philosophy to education for the studies in philosophy of education. Recasting philosophical skepticism, which has been dismissed by Dewey and Rorty in their critiques of modern epistemology, it explores whether Cavell's romantic interpretation of it can allow us to conceive of skepticism as an exemplary practice of education, especially internal to the learner. This opens (...)

Ethical Concerns and Procedural Pathways for Patients Who Are Incapacitated and Alone: Implications From a Qualitative Study for Advancing Ethical Practice.Pamela Teaster, Erica Wood, Jennifer Kwak, Casey Catlin & Jennifer Moye - 2017 - HEC Forum 29 (2):171-189.
Adults who are incapacitated and alone, having no surrogates, may be known as “unbefriended.” Decision-making for these particularly vulnerable patients is a common and vexing concern for healthcare providers and hospital ethics committees. When all other avenues for resolving the need for surrogate decision-making fail, patients who are incapacitated and alone may be referred for “public guardianship” or guardianship of last resort. While an appropriate mechanism in theory, these programs are often under-staffed and under-funded, laying the consequences of inadequacies on (...)

Re‐Conceptualizing Critical Thinking for Moral Education in Culturally Plural Societies.Duck‐Joo Kwak - 2007 - Educational Philosophy and Theory 39 (4):460–470.
This paper critically examines the contemporary educational discourse on critical thinking as one of the primary aims of education, its modernist defence and its postmodernist criticism, so as to explore a new way of conceptualizing critical thinking for moral education. What is at stake in this task is finding a plausible answer to the question of how the teaching of critical thinking in moral education can contribute to leading young people to avoid moral relativism while at the same time to (...)

Practising Philosophy, the Practice of Education: Exploring the Essay Form Through Lukács' Soul and Form.Duck-joo Kwak - 2010 - Philosophy of Education 44 (1):61-77.
This paper attempts to explore a pedagogical form of writing in which students are allowed to have more room to converse with themselves, such that their own being is reflected in their work. The attempt is made as a response to the poverty of educationally orientated assessment methods for students' academic performance in the predominant evidence-based assessment culture of schooling today. Taking Lukács' Soul and Form as a good source for this exploration, especially his commitment to essay form as a (...)

The Public Role of School Teachers in Korea: For its Conceptual Reconstruction Through its Historical Tracing.Jina Bhang & Duck-Joo Kwak - 2018 - Educational Philosophy and Theory 51 (9):924-935.
This paper makes a bold attempt to make sense of contemporary Koreans’ common expectation of the educational role of public school teachers by tracing its historical and cultural roots to the neo-Confucian humanistic tradition of the Joseon dynasty in Korea that lasted for about 500 years until Korea began to modernize in the late nineteenth century. In this attempt, the key concepts to be explored as equivalent to the Western idea of ‘liberal learning’ are the Confucian ethics of ‘learning for (...)

Ethics of Learning and Self-Knowledge: Two Cases in the Socratic and Confucian Teachings.Duck-Joo Kwak - 2016 - Educational Philosophy and Theory 48 (1):7-22.
This paper attempts to do a comparative study on two traditions of humanistic pedagogies, West and East, represented by the Socratic and the Confucian teachings. It is intended to put into question our common misunderstanding reflected in the stereotyped contrasts between the Socratic self and the Confucian self: an intellectualist vs. a moralist, an active vs. a passive learner, and a political progressive vs. a political conservative. In this attempt, I will focus on the clarification of the idea of ‘self-knowledge’ (...)

    Critical Thinking and Learning.Mark Mason - 2007 - Educational Philosophy and Theory 39 (4):339–349.
This paper introduces some of the debates in the field of critical thinking by highlighting differences among thinkers such as Siegel, Ennis, Paul, McPeck, and Martin, and poses some questions that arise from these debates. Does rationality transcend particular cultures, or are there different kinds of thinking, different styles of reasoning? What is the relationship between critical thinking and learning? In what ways does the moral domain overlap with these largely epistemic and pedagogical issues? The paper concludes by showing how (...)
