  1. Doing Well While Doing Bad? CSR in Controversial Industry Sectors.Ye Cai, Hoje Jo & Carrie Pan - 2012 - Journal of Business Ethics 108 (4):467 - 480.
In this article, we examine the empirical association between firm value and CSR engagement for firms in sinful industries, such as tobacco, gambling, and alcohol, as well as industries involved with emerging environmental, social, or ethical issues, i.e., weapon, oil, cement, and biotech. We develop and test three hypotheses, the window-dressing hypothesis, the value-enhancement hypothesis, and the value-irrelevance hypothesis. Using an extesive US sample from 1995 to 2009, we find that CSR engagement of firms in controversial industries positively affects firm (...)

Vice or Virtue? The Impact of Corporate Social Responsibility on Executive Compensation.Ye Cai, Hoje Jo & Carrie Pan - 2011 - Journal of Business Ethics 104 (2):159-173.
We empirically examine the impact of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on CEO compensation using a large sample of the US firms from 1996 to 2010. We develop and test two hypotheses, the overinvestment hypothesis based on agency theory and the conflict–resolution hypothesis based on stakeholder theory. We find that the lag of CSR adversely affects both total compensation and cash compensation, after controlling for various firm and board characteristics. Our estimates show that an interquartile increase in CSR is followed by (...)

Ethical Judgments in Business Ethics Research: Definition, and Research Agenda.John R. Sparks & Yue Pan - 2010 - Journal of Business Ethics 91 (3):405-418.
Decades of empirical and theoretical research has produced an extensive literature on the ethical judgments construct. Given its importance to understanding people’s ethical choices, future research should explore the psychological processes that produce ethical judgments. In this paper, the authors discuss two steps needed to advance this effort. First, they note that the business ethics literature lacks a single, generally accepted definition of ethical judgments. After reviewing several extant definitions, the authors offer a definition of the construct and discuss its (...)

Who Suffers When Supervisors Are Unhappy? The Roles of Leader–Member Exchange and Abusive Supervision.Su-Ying Pan & Katrina Jia Lin - 2018 - Journal of Business Ethics 151 (3):799-811.
Driven by the cognitive-neoassociationistic model of aggression, this study examines how supervisors’ negative affect at work influences their interaction with subordinates, which further affects subordinate outcomes. Drawing upon research on power/resource interdependence and victim precipitation theory, we also test whether the positive relationship between supervisors’ negative affect and abusive supervision is moderated by leader–member exchange. Using one hundred and eighty supervisor–subordinate dyads from five hotels, we found that, supervisors’ negative affect at work was positively related to abusive supervision, LMX buffered (...)

Robust Model Selection and Estimation for Censored Survival Data with High Dimensional Genomic Covariates.Guorong Chen, Sijian Wang, Guannan Sun & Huanxue Pan - 2019 - Acta Biotheoretica 67 (3):225-251.
When relating genomic data to survival outcomes, there are three main challenges that are the censored survival outcomes, the high-dimensionality of the genomic data, and the non-normality of data. We propose a method to tackle these challenges simultaneously and obtain a robust estimation of detecting significant genes related to survival outcomes based on Accelerated Failure Time model. Specifically, we include a general loss function to the AFT model, adopt model regularization and shrinkage technique, cope with parameters tuning and model selection, (...)

Argumentative Patterns in Chinese Medical Consultations.Dawei Pan, Yanjin Chen & Shier Ju - 2018 - Argumentation 32 (1):37-52.
Medical argumentation in non-Western societies has attracted little attention. In line with the pragma-dialectical approach to the study of argumentation, this article identifies a prototypical argumentative pattern in Chinese medical consultations. In addition to institutional preconditions, whose relevance to the argumentative pattern has been well cited, a factor that may be equally important has remained unnoticed: the preference for certain drugs, treatments or therapeutic measurements on the basis of folk interpretations of medical phenomena in individual ethnic groups. These preferences may (...)

The Impact of Social Darwinism Perception, Status Anxiety, Perceived Trust of People, and Cultural Orientation on Consumer Ethical Beliefs.Jyh-Shen Chiou & Lee-Yun Pan - 2008 - Journal of Business Ethics 78 (4):487-502.
This study intends to explore the effects of political, social and cultural values on consumers’ ethical beliefs regarding questionable consumption behaviors. The variables examined include status anxiety, social Darwinism perception, perceived trust of people, and cultural orientation. Based on a field survey in Taiwan, the results showed that consumers with low ethical beliefs have higher perception of social Darwinism and status anxiety than consumers possess neutral and high ethical beliefs. The result also showed that the neutral ethics group had higher (...)

Remembering by Heart: Giulio Aleni on the Heart, Brain, and Soul.Dawei Pan - 2020 - Dao: A Journal of Comparative Philosophy 19 (1):91-111.
Unlike similar works, Xingxue Cushu 性學觕述 by the Italian Jesuit missionary Giulio Aleni sought to deliver the Christian doctrine into China by introducing Western medicine. The conflict between the Christian concept of the soul and the traditional psychic concept in China made the task difficult. Scholasticism rejects the idea that an individual’s soul may be physically divided or localized, whereas the Chinese tradition largely assumes the contrary and regards the heart as the center of one’s psychic powers or vitality. Aleni (...)

Using multisource data and multilevel analysis, we propose that the ethical stance of supervisors influences subordinates’ perceptions of corporate social responsibility which in turn influences subordinates’ trust in the organization resulting in their taking increased personal social responsibility and engagement in organizational citizenship behaviors oriented toward both the organization and other individuals. Using a multilevel model, we assessed the extent to which ethical leadership and CSR at the work unit level impacts subordinates’ behaviors mediated by organizational trust at the individual (...)

No Doing Without Time.Shen Pan & Peter Carruthers - 2019 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 42.
Hoerl & McCormack claim that animals don't represent time. Because this makes a mystery of established findings in comparative psychology, there had better be some important payoff. The main one they mention is that it explains a clash of intuition about the reality of time's passage. But any theory that recognizes the representational requirements of agency can do likewise.

Characterizing Software Stability Via Change Propagation Simulation.Weifeng Pan, Haibo Jiang, Hua Ming, Chunlai Chai, Bi Chen & Hao Li - 2019 - Complexity 2019:1-17.
Software stability means the resistance to the amplification of changes in software. It has become one of the most important attributes that affect maintenance cost. To control the maintenance cost, many approaches have been proposed to measure software stability. However, it is still a very difficult task to evaluate the software stability especially when software becomes very large and complex. In this paper, we propose to characterize software stability via change propagation simulation. First, we propose a class coupling network to (...)

This research focuses on the self-organization of vegetation patterns on severely degraded eroding lands, triggered by water resource in the deposited sediment layer on which the vegetation patterns are formed. A nonlinear spatiotemporal model is developed with the consideration of the interactions between vegetation biomass and water resource stored in the sediment layer. With employment of the model, the conditions for pattern formation of the considered ecological system are determined via Turing instability analysis. Numerical simulations of the research demonstrate the (...)

In this work, the consensus problem of fractional-order multiagent systems with the general linear model of fixed topology is studied. Both distributed PDα-type and Dα-type fractional-order iterative learning control algorithms are proposed. Here, a virtual leader is introduced to generate the desired trajectory, fixed communication topology is considered, and only a subset of followers can access the desired trajectory. The convergence conditions are proved using graph theory, fractional calculus, and λ norm theory. The theoretical analysis shows that the output of (...)

Many computational tools for the simulation and design of emergency evacuation and egress are now available. However, due to the scarcity of human and social behavioral data, these computational tools rely on assumptions that have been found inconsistent or unrealistic. This paper presents a multi-agent based framework for simulating human and social behavior during emergency evacuation. A prototype system has been developed, which is able to demonstrate some emergent behaviors, such as competitive, queuing, and herding behaviors. For illustration, an example (...)

Though he has become known to his detractors as a theorist who has replaced rational discourse with pure power in his theory of the decision, Carl Schmitt's notion of politics is, on a fundamental level, culturally and ethically based. This cultural and ethical conception of politics permeates his work, not only in texts about explicitly cultural issues, such as his 1916 study of Theodor Däubler's Expressionist Nordlicht or his meditation on the connection between politics and art in Shakespeare in Hamlet (...)

    Delayed Probabilistic Risk Attitude: A Parametric Approach.Jinrui Pan, Craig S. Webb & Horst Zank - 2019 - Theory and Decision 87 (2):201-232.
Experimental studies suggest that individuals exhibit more risk aversion in choices among prospects when the payment and resolution of uncertainty are immediate relative to when it is delayed. This leads to preference reversals that cannot be attributed to discounting. When data suggest that utility is time-independent, probability weighting functions, such as those used to model prospect theory preferences, can accommodate such reversals. We propose a simple descriptive model with a two-parameter probability weighting function where one of these parameters depends on (...)

The research on regular and irregular vegetation pattern formation in semiarid regions is an important field in ecology. Applying the framework of coupled map lattice, a novel nonlinear space- and time-discrete model is developed based on discretizing the classical Klausmeier model and the vegetation pattern formation in semiarid regions is restudied in this research. Through analysis of Turing-type instability for the discrete model, the conditions for vegetation pattern formation are determined. The discrete model is verified by Klausmeier’s results with the (...)

The pharmaceutical tablet manufacturing process via wet granulation holds a critical position in pharmaceutical industry. The interest in integrating mechanistic process modeling into the pharmaceutical development has been increased because simulation model is a prerequisite for process design, analysis, control, and optimization. So the simulation modeling for PTMP via wet granulation is very necessary and significant. This study aims at proposing a simulation modeling framework for PTMP via spray fluidized bed granulation, which is one of the most widely used wet (...)

Increasingly, taxonomies are being developed and used by industry practitioners to facilitate information interoperability and retrieval. Within a single industrial domain, there exist many taxonomies that are intended for different applications. Industry specific taxonomies often represent the vocabularies that are commonly used by the practitioners. Their jobs are multi-faceted, which include checking for code and regulatory compliance. As such, it will be very desirable if industry practitioners are able to easily locate and browse regulations of interest. In practice, multiple sources (...)
