    Charles S. Peirce on Norms and Ideals. [REVIEW]B. M. M. - 1968 - Review of Metaphysics 22 (1):151-152.
The vitality of Peirce's ideas has recently stimulated the writing of several books and articles. This is not strictly a revival, but rather the first systematic presentation to the philosophic public of what Peirce hoped was an architectonic philosophy. While some commentators find Peirce's work to consist merely of brilliant fragments of an ultimate failure, Potter believes that Peirce "has achieved a partial synthesis with gaps and inconsistencies, some of which at least can be remedied." In this book Potter distinguishes (...)

    Berkeley’s Principles and Dialogues. Background Source Materials.

    Exact Philosophy: Problems, Tools and Goals. [REVIEW]H. M. - 1974 - Review of Metaphysics 27 (4):787-787.
This book consists of a series of papers "read and discussed at the first Symposium of Exact Philosophy" at Montreal in 1971. "Exact philosophy," the editor says, means "mathematical philosophy, i.e., philosophy done with the explicit help of mathematical logic and mathematics." Judging from the contents, a more accurate statement would be that "exact philosophy" means formal semantics and modal logic. Two thirds of the papers are on these topics. The others include an essay on "Concepts of Randomness" by Peter (...)

    Concurrent Processing of Saccades.Robert M. McPeek, Edward L. Keller & Ken Nakayama - 1999 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 22 (4):691-692.
We summarize several experiments indicating that the saccadic system is capable of simultaneously programming two movements toward different goals. This concurrent processing of saccades can lead to the execution of two saccades separated by an extremely short intersaccadic interval. This supports the idea of target competition proposed in Findlay & Walker's article, but suggests a greater degree of parallel processing. We provide evidence that concurrent processing of two saccades is not limited to higher-level planning subsystems; rather, it also involves both (...)

  25. Charles Darwin's Zoology Notes & Specimen Lists From H.M.S. Beagle.Charles Darwin - 2000 - Cambridge University Press.
This transcription of notes made by Charles Darwin during the voyage of H. M. S. Beagle records his observations of the animals and plants that he encountered, and provides a valuable insight into the intellectual development of one of our most influential scientists. Darwin drew on many of these notes for his well known Journal of Researches (1839), but the majority of them have remained unpublished. This volume provides numerous examples of his unimpeachable accuracy in describing the wide range (...)
