  1. Aristocles of Messene: Testimonia and Fragments.Maria Lorenza Aristocles & Chiesara Bertola - 2001 - Oxford University Press.
An often overlooked figure today, Aristocles of Messene remains an important source for understanding the philosophical thought of early Pyrrhonism. In this book Dr. Chiesara shows Aristocles to be an accurate historian and trustworthy reporter of the major trends of first century philosophical thought including Platonism, Stoicism, Pyrrhonism, Protagorism, and Epicurism, and to offer precious additions to the history of ancient philosophy, in particular to the reconstruction not only of early but also of late, namely Aenesidemean, Pyrrhonism.

  2. Ephraim of Ainos at Work: A Cycle of Epigrams in the Margins of Niketas Choniates.Julián Bértola - 2021 - Byzantinische Zeitschrift 114 (3):929-1000.
This article offers the first critical edition of a cycle of epigrams found in the margins of six manuscripts of Niketas Choniates’ History. This paper also proposes the attribution of the poems to Ephraim of Ainos, an author mainly known for his verse chronicle, which has Niketas Choniates as a source. Our poems occur in a group of manuscripts which we already knew Ephraim had used for his chronicle. Many formal parallels between the epigrams and the chronicle point to the (...)

  3. Aristocles of Messene: Testimonia and Fragments.Maria Lorenza Chiesara - 2002 - Oxford University Press UK.
Aristocles of Messene is a first century AD Aristotelian philosopher who discusses the thought of ancient Greek philosophers, including Plato, Zeno, Pyrrho, and Epicurus, as well as Eleatic and Cyrenaic philosophies. His main contribution is his testimony on Pyrrhonism, and his political verve makes his On Philosophy an interesting and amusing read for specialists and non-specialists alike.

The Trouble with the Beekeeper. Hans Werner Henze’s Aristaeus Or: Operatic Metaphysics After Humanism.Mauro Fosco Bertola - 2017 - International Journal of Žižek Studies 11 (3).
In their monograph Opera’s Second Death from 2002, Žižek and Dolar seem to join the illustrious company of cultural critics and musicologists, from Adorno to Gary Tomlinson, tolling the death knell for the operatic genre: with the advent of the 20 th century and the radical critique of the humanist premises that opera relied upon, the genre, so the story goes, had become at least anachronistic, if not outright reactionary. In the first section of my article I intend to not (...)

You Only Get It Twice: Foreword.Rex Buttler & Mauro Fosco Bertola - 2017 - International Journal of Žižek Studies 11 (3).
It would make a wonderful musical study – perhaps someone has already done it – to compare the various operatic and instrumental versions of the famous myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. [...] We know all too well the anxiety question par excellence, the disquieting “ Che vuoi? ” traversing our symbolically embedded lives. So, let me indulge a bit in this uncanny zone and ask: “ Che vogliamo? ”, what is our goal with this issue? Why did we start this (...)

The Anthropic Principle: Proceedings of the Second Venice Conference on Cosmology and Philosophy.F. Bertola & Umberto Curi (eds.) - 1988 - Cambridge University Press.
The questions that were purely in the realms of philosophy are now beginning to be answered by science. The second Venice Conference on Cosmology and Philosophy explores the anthropic principle which states that the Universe has the conditions we observe because we are here. Out of all possible universes we can only experience the restricted class that permits observers. This realization has profound implications for cosmology, philosophy and theology; all of which are explored in this book by thirteen contributors who (...)
