The use of patristic texts was tightly bound up with the needs of the contemporary discussion which provided Grotius with sources for his patristic citations. His use of ancient texts especially in Ordinum Hollandiae ac Westfrisiae pietas proved to be highly controversial.Grotius's advocacy of tolerance with respect to various forms of Christianity determines his use of patristic texts as well. He looks for examples of moderation in the Early Church and by this accomplishes a significant shift of perspective. (...) He points out the diversity of expressions in the Early Church and therefore replaces questions of dogmatic definition with the question of how to handle orthodoxy and heresy in society. In doing so, he implies requirements for the proper reading of patristic texts in his own times. Grotius's notion of Christian liberty is connected to awareness of context and intrinsically linked to a historical understanding. In his writings, contextualisation involves both religious-historical comparison and the integration of general sources from antiquity. With regard to early Christian sources, this means that Grotius understands them as deeply rooted in the broader ancient context. This approach to early Christian literature is already visible in De Iure Praedae. His sensibility for cultural variation, his comparative method and historical interest in ancient institutions are outstanding, and Grotius has these characteristics in common with legal humanists like François Baudouin. Controversial industry sectors, such as alcohol, gambling, and tobacco, though long-established, suffer organizational legitimacy problems. The authors consider various strategies used to seek organizational legitimacy in the U.K. casino gambling market. The findings are based on a detailed, multistakeholder case study pertaining to a failed bid for a regional supercasino. They suggest four generic strategies for seeking organizational legitimacy in this highly complex context: construing, earning, bargaining, and capturing, as well as pathways that combine these strategies. The case analysis (...) and proposed bidimensional model of generic legitimacy-seeking strategies contribute to limited literature on organizational legitimacy in controversial industry sectors. In addition, beyond organizations active in controversial contexts, this study and its implications are useful for individuals and organizations supporting or opposing the organizational legitimacy of organizations in controversial industries. In Intimations of Christianity Among the Ancient Greeks , Simone Weil discusses precursors to Christian religious ideas which can be found in ancient Greek mythology, literature and philosophy. She looks at evidence of "Christian" feelings in Greek literature, notably in Electra, Orestes, and Antigone , and in the Iliad , going on to examine God in Plato, and divine love in creation, as seen by the ancient Greeks.
This timely book argues that the institutionalisation of literary theory, particularly within American and British academic circles, has led to a sterility of thought which ignores the special character of literary art. Mark Edmundson traces the origins of this tendency to the ancient quarrel between philosophy and poetry, in which Plato took the side of philosophy; and he shows how the work of modern theorists - Foucault, Derrida, de Man and Bloom - exhibits similar drives to subsume poetic art into (...) some 'higher' kind of thought. This article examines the controversial issue of blasphemy in literature from the viewpoint of reception inside and outside the academia. The thesis of the article is that blasphemy in literature, though inherently related to religion and language, has a plurality of connotations and interpretations (dissidence, intertextuality, critique of colonialism, discursive strategy, alterity/Otherness, ethnicity, subversive text). Consequently, blasphemy in literature is an incentive for fruitful discussions regarding tolerance, freedom of expression, and the re-situation of the (post)modern self (...) in today’s world, dominated by an uncanny admixture of secular and religious values. Um estudo sobre a relação entre literatura e religião tomando ambas como expressão de produtividade da interpretação no contexto da Modernidade. O artigo aborda os pressupostos filosóficos da relação entre história da salvação e história da interpretação, e suas consequências para a consciência histórico-cultural do Ocidente, tal como examinado por Gianni Vattimo. Segundo este, o legado do Cristianismo se atualiza na Modernidade tardia em termos de produtividade da interpretação, ampliando a noção de linguagem e discurso por suas implicações ontológicas e (...) epistemológicas. A partir desses argumentos, a relação entre literatura e religião se estreita, permitindo compreender ambas como formas de produção simbólica, narrativa e discursiva de interpretações poéticas e normativas da vida no mundo. Para compreendê-lo nesses termos, recorre-se a conceitos chaves da hermenêutica literária desenvolvida por Paul Ricoeur, com o qual temos categorias de análise, bem como uma compreensão hermenêutica do próprio evento do texto literário. Finalmente, o artigo conclui com apontamentos para o que seria uma hermenêutica teológica da literatura, nos termos da teologia da cultura de Paul Tillich. Palavras-chaves: Literatura. Religião. Teologia da cultura.: This article presents a study on the relationship between literature and religion taking both as expression of the productivity of interpretation in the context of modernity. The article discusses the philosophical assumptions of the relationship between the salvation history and the history of interpretation and its implications for historical and cultural consciousness of the West, as seen by Gianni Vattimo. According this author, the legacy of Christianity is updated in late modernity in terms of productivity interpretation, expanding the notion of language and discourse for their ontological and epistemological implications. From these arguments on, the relationship between literature and religion becomes closer, allowing us to understand both literature and religion as forms of symbolic production: poetic and normative interpretations of life in the world. To understand it in those terms, key concepts of literary hermeneutics developed by Paul Ricoeur are evoked. These terms are used as categories of analysis to facilitate a hermeneutic understanding of the actual event of the literary text. Finally, the paper concludes with some considerations for a hermeneutics of theological literature, in terms of the theology of Paul Tillich culture. Keywords : Literature. Religion. Interpretation. The personality of Metropolitan Bartolomeu Valeriu Anania has been extremely complex, first of all due to the various domains of his work - literature, essays, art history, theology and biblical theology -, and secondly due to his relation to politics, especially his connections with the Legionary Movement and with Communism. Despite having been incarcerated as a political prisoner in some of Bolshevik Romania's famous prisons (Jilava, Pitești, Aiud), Bartolomeu Valeriu Anania is still accused of having collaborated with the political (...) police of Ceaușescu's regime, Securitatea . The present text analyses the writer's work in order to explain the relationship between religion, literature, and politics, stressing both their connections, as well as his journey from being a writer to being the theologian commenting on and revising the translation of the Holy Scripture. The analysis is therefore oriented towards Valeriu Anania's literary works, namely his poetry, prose, and theatre, so as to underline its religious background, be it either theological or alluding to Romanian popular religiosity; furthermore, it focuses on his theology, from icon to biblical theology, stressing the associations with literature and the importance of literary workmanship. Finally, based on the cultural analyses which unveil his deep affection for the Romanian spirituality and considering several politically controversial episodes of his biography, the text will attempt to argue in favour of the lack of sufficient and reliable evidence that could prove his collaboration with the political police of Communist Romania.
