“A Child Has Been Born unto Us”: Arendt on Birth.Adriana Cavarero, Silvia Guslandi & Cosette Bruhns - 2014 - philoSOPHIA: A Journal of Continental Feminism 4 (1):12-30.
In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:“A Child Has Been Born unto Us”Arendt on BirthAdriana CavareroTranslated by Silvia Guslandi and Cosette BruhnsIn The Human Condition, at the end of the dense chapter on action, Hannah Arendt reiterates that action, that is, the political faculty for excellence, “is ontologically rooted” in the fact of natality, “like an ever-present reminder that men, though they must die, are not born in order to die but in order (...)

A caring interview: Polar questions, epistemic stance and care in examinations of eligibility for social benefits.Elin Thunman, Anders Bruhn & Mats Ekström - 2019 - Discourse Studies 21 (4):375-397.
Based on conversation analysis, this study investigates central practices in what is defined as a caring interview, in the context of welfare administration. Caring refers to a helpful interviewing in reformulations of questions, taking interviewees’ difficulties to answer into consideration; a caring attitude in the framing of questions, showing understanding of clients’ circumstances and professional’s enactment of expertise in assessments of clients’ disabilities and care needs. Data include a corpus of 43 recorded interviews in which officials at the Swedish Social (...)

Growth mindset and responses to acute stress.Ethan R. Fischer, Cosette Fox & K. Lira Yoon - 2023 - Cognition and Emotion 37 (6):1153-1159.
Individuals with high levels of growth mindsets believe that attributes are malleable. Although links between acute stress responses and growth mindsets of thought, emotion, and behaviour are central to the conceptualisation of psychological disorders and their treatment, such links have yet to be examined. Undergraduate participants (N = 135) completed a modified Trier Social Stress Test (TSST), and their salivary cortisol and anxiety were assessed throughout the session. Hierarchical linear models revealed that higher growth mindset of behaviour was associated with (...)

  7. The Functionality of Gray Area Ethics in Organizations.John G. Bruhn - 2008 - Journal of Business Ethics 89 (2):205-214.
All organizations have gray areas where the border between right and wrong behavior is blurred, but where a major part of organizational decision-making takes place. While gray areas can be sources of problems for organizations, they also have benefits. The author proposes that gray areas are functional in organizations. Gray areas become problematic when the process for dealing with them is flawed, when gatekeeper managers see themselves as more ethical than their peers, and when leaders, by their own inattention, inaction, (...)

    On the Non-Lorentz-Invariance of M.W. Evans' O(3)-Symmetry Law.Gerhard W. Bruhn - 2008 - Foundations of Physics 38 (1):3-6.
In 1992 M.W. Evans proposed the O(3) symmetry of electromagnetic fields by adding a constant longitudinal magnetic field to the well-known transverse electric and magnetic fields of circularly polarized plane waves, such that certain cyclic relations of a so-called O(3) symmetry are fulfilled. Since then M.W. Evans has elevated this O(3) symmetry to the status of a new law of electromagnetics. As a law of physics must be invariant under admissible coordinate transforms, namely Lorentz transforms, in 2000 he published a (...)

Voegelin Recollected: Conversations on a Life.Barry Cooper & Jodi Bruhn (eds.) - 2007 - University of Missouri.
Although his contributions to philosophy are revered and his writings have been collected, Eric Voegelin’s persona will inevitably fade with the memories of those who knew him. This book preserves the human element of Voegelin by capturing those valuable personal recollections. Barry Cooper and Jodi Bruhn conducted intensive interviews with Voegelin’s wife, his closest friends, and his first-generation students—many of whom have since passed on—in order to bring to print everything important about his life and personality. American scholars will especially (...)

Bilder der Präzision: Praktiken der Verfeinerung in Technik, Kunst und Wissenschaft.Matthias Bruhn & Sara Hillnhütter (eds.) - 2018 - Boston: De Gruyter.

Explorations of Universal Order and Beauty in Paul Hindemith's Symphony Die Harmonie der Welt.Siglind Bruhn - 2010 - Nordic Journal of Aesthetics 21 (39).
On 11 August 1957, the Munich Opera Festival premiered a recently completed opera by the celebrated German composer Paul Hindemith, Die Harmonie der Welt. Hindemith bases the dramaturgical and musical features of this opera on the scientific and spiritual content found in the writings of the 17th-century mathematician, astronomer and philosopher Johannes Kepler. Six years before he started working on this opera, the composer responded to a commission received from the Swiss conductor and patron of contemporary composers, Paul Sacher, by (...)

Orchestrating Difference: The Address of Composite Audiences as Pluralist Rhetoric.Tommy Bruhn - 2022 - Philosophy and Rhetoric 55 (2):177-201.
ABSTRACT Speakers may argue in ways that facilitate cooperation, without really establishing unity. If emphasis is put on the word “composite” in composite audience, then the complementary act of addressing such an audience can be understood as an orchestration of different people, who may cooperate toward a conclusion. This brings attention to the multidimensionality of issues in pluralistic communities and the range of consequences proposals may have. Following Perelman’s and Olbrechts-Tyteca’s New Rhetoric, I discuss how the compositeness of such argumentation (...)

Un successo della pace duraturo? Max Weber nella guerra mondiale.Hinnerk Bruhns - 2020 - Scienza and Politica. Per Una Storia Delle Dottrine 32 (63):63-86.
This article explores Max Weber’s ideas about a «successful peace» that he exposed during World War I. For Weber, a successful peace depended essentially on important domestic reforms and a fundamental reorganisation of the German Reich, more than on the foreign policy dimension. Analysing Weber’s “ideas of 1918” – opposed to the so-called “ideas of 1914” – this paper focuses on three aspects: nation and citizenship, Prussia, German tradition, history and political culture.

Practical theories: Concepts, conceptions and conceptualizations of communication.Klaus Bruhn Jensen - 2016 - Empedocles: European Journal for the Philosophy of Communication 7 (2):143-156.
This article revisits the place of normative and other practical issues in the wider conceptual architecture of communication theory, building on the tradition of philosophical pragmatism. The article first characterizes everyday concepts of communication as the accumulated outcome of natural evolution and history: practical resources for human existence and social coexistence. Such practical concepts have served as the point of departure for diverse theoretical conceptions of what communication is. The second part of the article highlights the past neglect and current (...)

    Wrongful discrimination against non-pregnant people?Kasper Lippert-Rasmussen, Andreas Bengtson & Hugo Cosette-Lefebvre - 2023 - Journal of Medical Ethics 50 (1):26-27.
Heloise Robinson argues that pregnant women have a higher moral status than non-pregnant persons and that, for this reason, pregnant women ought to be treated ‘noticeably’ better than non-pregnant persons. 1 In this commentary, we present two challenges to Robinson’s argument. First, the compounding disadvantage objection: treating involuntarily, non-pregnant women worse than voluntarily pregnant women unjustly compounds their disadvantage. Second, the identity objection: treating non-pregnant people worse than pregnant people amounts to pro tanto wrongful discrimination based on a fundamental aspect (...)

Value dissonance and ethics failure in academia: A causal connection? [REVIEW]John G. Bruhn - 2008 - Journal of Academic Ethics 6 (1):17-32.
Ethics failure in academia is not new, yet its prevalence, causes, and methods to prevent it remain a matter of debate. The author’s premise is that value dissonance underlies most of the reasons ethics failure occurs. Vignettes are used to illustrate value dissonance at the individual and institutional levels. Suggestions are offered for ways academic institutions can assume greater responsibility as a moral agency to prevent the occurrence of ethics failure.

We conducted Bayesian Poisson regression to determine the association of navigation performance with domain-specific cognitive functions. We determined associations of gait and accelerometric features with disorientation events in real-time data using Bayesian generalized mixed effect models. The accuracy (...)
