From Basic Processes to Real-World Problems: How Research on Emotion and Emotion Regulation Can Inform Understanding of Psychopathology, and Vice Versa.Daniel G. Dillon, Christen M. Deveney & Diego A. Pizzagalli - 2011 - Emotion Review 3 (1):74-82.
Research on emotion and emotion regulation is expected to improve our understanding of psychopathology. However, achieving this understanding requires overcoming several obstacles, including the paucity of objective markers of specific emotions or psychiatric diagnoses, and the fact that emotion regulation is a concept that can be difficult to operationalize. We review affective neuroscience research that has addressed these issues by focusing on psychological and neural mechanisms implicated in approach and avoidance behaviors, as revealed by studies of fear, anxiety, and reward (...)

We have synthesized a 582,970-base pair Mycoplasma genitalium genome. This synthetic genome, named M. genitalium JCVI-1.0, contains all the genes of wild-type M. genitalium G37 except MG408, which was disrupted by an antibiotic marker to block pathogenicity and to allow for selection. To identify the genome as synthetic, we inserted "watermarks" at intergenic sites known to tolerate transposon insertions. Overlapping "cassettes" of 5 to 7 kilobases (kb), assembled from chemically synthesized oligonucleotides, were joined by in vitro recombination to produce intermediate (...)

    Automated Deduction in a Graphical Temporal Logic.L. E. Moser, P. M. Melliar-Smith, Y. S. Ramakrishna, G. Kutty & L. K. Dillon - 1996 - Journal of Applied Non-Classical Logics 6 (1):29-47.
ABSTRACT Real-time graphical interval logic is a modal logic for reasoning about time in which the basic modality is the interval. The logic differs from other logics in that it has a natural intuitive graphical representation that resembles the timing diagrams drawn by system designers. We have developed an automted deduction system for the logic, which includes a theorem prover and a user interface. The theorem prover checks the validity of proofs in the logic and produces counterexamples to invalid proofs. (...)

    Why Even Kim-Style Psychophysical Laws Are Impossible.Steven G. Daniel - 1999 - Pacific Philosophical Quarterly 80 (3):225-237.
If the mental is subject to indeterminacy, does this rule out the possibility of psychophysical laws? One might think so. However, Jaegwon Kim has argued for the existence of a kind of psychophysical law that is not obviously susceptible to problems posed by indeterminacy. I begin by introducing a weak and relatively uncontroversial indeterminacy thesis. Then, by appealing to constraints on theories of strong supervenience and to general considerations about the nature of indeterminacy, I argue that even Kim’s laws cannot (...)

    Logic, Vagueness, and the Use Theory.Steven G. Daniel - 2003 - Canadian Journal of Philosophy 33 (2):259 - 283.
In numerous essays over the years, and most recently in his Meaning, Paul Horwich has worked to articulate and defend a version of the use theory of meaning. At the heart of his project is the idea that the meaning of a word is constituted by a regularity in speakers’ use of it — i.e., by a regularity in speakers’ dispositions to accept as true, to reject as false, or neither to accept nor to reject sentences containing it. A ‘use (...)

How Trivial is the “Trivial Neuron Doctrine”?Steven G. Daniel - 1999 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 22 (5):834-835.
I argue that Gold & Stoljar's “trivial neuron doctrine” is not in fact trivial. Many familiar positions in the philosophy of mind run afoul of it, and it is unclear that even those whom Gold & Stoljar identify as adherents of the trivial neuron doctrine can be comfortably described as such.

Loving Immigrants in America: An Experiential Philosophy of Personal Interaction by Daniel G. Campos.Kim Díaz - 2019 - The Pluralist 14 (3):122-125.
In his book Loving Immigrants in America: An Experiential Philosophy of Personal Interaction, Daniel Campos shares a refreshing sentiment: "I cannot argue others into understanding my experience; I can only convey and reflect upon it, so that a critical dialogue can ensue". Campos's first-person narrative is intimate, vulnerable, and honest. Over fifteen chapters, Campos writes about his experience as an immigrant in the United States and memories of growing up in Costa Rica.Campos shares with us the process of his (...)

In the last 20 years the institution of the museum has gone through a period of redefining its role and its functions in society, its forms of representation, its authority in discourses on the past and its objects. The stated aim of many of the ‘memory museums’ which were established during this period is to invite reflection on the aestheticization of memory and on the fact that the exhibition is seen as a narrative which is challenging conventional codes of perception.
