McFetridge (in Logical necessity and other essays . London: Blackwell, 1990 ) suggests that to treat a proposition as logically necessary—to believe a proposition logically necessary, and to manifest that belief—is a matter of preparedness to deploy that proposition as a premise in reasoning from any supposition. We consider whether a suggestion in that spirit can be generalized to cover all cases of absolute necessity, both logical and non-logical, and we conclude that it can. In Sect. 2, we explain the (...) significance that such an account of manifestation of belief in absolute necessity has for the prospects of a non-realist theory of modality. In Sect. 3, we offer a sympathetic articulation of the detail that underlies the McFetridge conception of belief in logical necessity. In Sects. 4 and 5, we show that the conception so articulated will not generalize to encompass all cases of belief in absolute necessity and proceed to offer a remedy. Our proposal is based upon a distinction between two kinds of suppositional act: A-supposing and C-supposing (Sect. 6). In Sect. 7, we then explain and defend our central thesis: (roughly) that (manifestation of) belief in absolute necessity is a matter of preparedness to deploy as a premise in reasoning under any C-supposition. Finally, we indicate that there is some promise in the parallel thesis that manifestation of the treatment of a proposition as a priori is a matter of preparedness to deploy as a premise in reasoning under any A-supposition (Sect. 8). Closed-mindedness is a characteristic trait of irresponsible believers. For this reason and others, educators should actively discourage closed-mindedness in their students. One way to do this is to cultivate its opposing virtue: open-mindedness. Drawing on the work of William Hare, Danielle Diver defends the status of open-mindedness as an epistemic virtue and explains why it is truth-conducive, even in epistemically hostile environments. Diver goes on to argue that open-mindedness is fundamental to the practice of philosophy and that (...) teaching philosophy in schools, especially through the methods of Philosophy for Children (P4C), is an effective way to cultivate open-mindedness in students. Competition, and its effect on educational environments, has been widely debated. On the one hand, it is argued that competition raises attainment and, on the other, it is said that whilst it may raise attainment for some, it exists at the expense of a supportive school environment. Should philosophy undertaken as a subject in schools, such as P4C, involve any level of competition if there is a chance of it raising performance? Scholars have argued that communities of inquiry within P4C (...) conflict with the notion of competition, using competition as a contrast to cooperation, as competition implies that only certain voices will be heard and, without it, participation is more welcome and inclusive. Perhaps there is already too much competition in schools, in which case philosophy should be the one place students need not worry about competing with their peers and instead focus purely on collaboration. But what if the very skills that competition undermines are rewarded in a competition? While it stands that competition can silence particular voices and conflict with cooperation, I will argue that competition can avoid these outcomes and improve philosophical performance if such competition rewards collaboration and inquiry, therefore encouraging it. The question of the function of modal judgement is an interesting philosophical issue, and John Divers's paper (this volume) has persuaded me that it has not received the attention it deserves. I think it is an important and interesting question even apart from any more ambitious claims that are made about its role in settling other issues about modality. Even if we became convinced that the story about function put no constraints whatsoever, epistemologically or metaphysically, on a theory of modality, (...) it would still remain an interesting question about one of the pervasive and perhaps fundamental things we do in our cognitive lives. A partir de courtes meditations nees d'une chronique a la radio, le philosophe Daniel Vigne s'interroge sur le sens de notre vie comme de ce que nous avons de plus precieux. Chercher la direction, la signification, les enjeux de cette existence dans laquelle, dirait Pascal, nous sommes embarques. L’exhortation à la soumission des esclaves en 1 P 2,18-25 peut-elle être porteuse de sens pour les lecteurs d’aujourd’hui? Une approche narratologique permettra de constater que l’énonciation, par l’agencement de divers indices narratifs, tels les changements d’énonciataires, la spatialisation, la temporalité et l’intertextualité, provoque une identification du lecteur avec les esclaves qui deviennent le paradigme de toute personne souffrant des situations d’injustice et stimule tout lecteur à accepter l’exhortation proposée.

Résumé Divers auteurs ont attribué la plus ancienne attestation de l’imputation du cancer à une infection à Amatus Lusitanius (1511-1568) à propos du cas de trois enfants atteints d’un cancer du sein après avoir partagé le lit de leur mère elle-même atteinte de cette tumeur. On reconstruit ici l’écheveau d’informations qui a abouti à ces imputations. Des confusions apparaissent. Ainsi une histoire approfondie et philologique de l’histoire de la médecine à la Renaissance reste à mener à bien.

Divers modèles et figures du Christ surgissent de cette quête multi­forme Jésus philosophe cynique itinérant, sapiential, homme de l'Esprit, prophète de la restauration d'Israêl, militant du changement social...), ce qui ne suffit pourtant pas à jeter le soupçon (...) sur tous les auteurs ou sur la totalité de leurs travaux dont certains, par leur connaissance du milieu juif contemporain et des mouvements histori­ques, éclairent singulièrement le contexte politique dans lequel s'inscrit le destin du Christ. Témoignant d'une « relative cohérence », la « troisième quête », par l'usage des sources , la question de l'eschatologie et la valorisation de la judéité de Jésus, ravive la question de l'enjeu théologiquement fort de la quête du Jésus historique.It is always temping to divide historical research into periods, especially when a group or a tendency makes the division with a “ third quest », even at the price of exegetical practices and methodological presuppositions at the least debatable . Diverse models and figures of Christ arise from this multiform quest . This does not suffice, however, to throw suspicion on all the authors or on all theïr works , some of whom, by their knowledge of the contemporaneous Jewish milieu and historical movements hed singular light on the political context in which the destiny of Christ was written. Giving witness to a “relative coherenc”, the « third quest “ by using sources , the question of eschatology, and the valorization of the jewishness of Jesus, gives new life to the question of the strong theological stakes involved with the quest of the historical Jesus. Assim como nas séries (...) de TV, especialmente em Orange Is The New Black, com as narrativas sobre presidiárias, Suzane segue o seu percurso como num romance folhetinesco vivo e seriado, que ronda os discursos midiáticos e que por sua vez, sempre deixam a história inacabada com a espera de um novo número, uma nova edição, que não deixa morrer a curiosidade do seu público. Cet article est une réponse directe à certains critiques du projet de démocratie cosmopolitique, qui insistent sur l’absence de détails sur les acteurs politiques, économiques et sociaux susceptibles d’avoir un intérêt à soutenir ce programme. Nous montrons qu’il existe différentes manières de développer la gouvernance démocratique au niveau mondial, qui sont associées à divers acteurs politiques, économiques et sociaux trouvant leur intérêt dans un projet de ce genre. La démocratie cosmopolitique est donc un projet ouvert dont le but est de (...) rendre la gouvernance mondiale plus responsable, plus transparente et plus légitime. La palette des acteurs et des mesures présentée ici met en avant l’orientation et les choix politiques nécessaires pour faire de ce projet une réalité. (shrink)

L’éthique est opérante dans la politique même si son rôle reste parfois difficile à percevoir. L’article relève la volonté des rédacteurs des constitutions de contraindre les détenteurs d’offices politiques à se montrer à la hauteur des exigences éthiques, par la mise en place des dispositifs institutionnels les plus divers poursuivant cette fin (comme les élections et les mandats de durée limitée). L’article met en évidence aussi le rôle d’une vision normative, « aristotélicienne » de la politique, dans laquelle éthique et (...) politique convergent entièrement. Cette vision normative constitue une stimulation bienvenue pour toute société et pour tout gouvernement. Mais elle constitue aussi un facteur d’opacité dans la conduite des affaires de la collectivité, dans la mesure où elle rend inavouable tout ce qui ne se situe pas à son niveau. Les exigences éthiques, en rendant les hommes rétifs à cette opacité, constituent un facteur de crise pour la politique. (shrink)

Ce livre rassemble des articles que l'auteur a consacrés à la phénoménologie. Avec plusieurs autres textes publiés dans ses livres précédents, ils dessinent les linéaments d'une archéologie de la phénoménologie française. Si la phénoménologie a pu bouleverser la philosophie au vingtième siècle, c'est qu'elle est avant tout une méthode. Aussi, loin de se figer en un ensemble de thèses, s'est-elle développée dans une pluralité de directions et a-t-elle retourné vers, et parfois contre elle-même, sa réflexion critique. Les pensées analysées en (...) témoignent, la phénoménologie française est en dialogue ouvert avec les grands systèmes philosophiques, mais aussi avec d'autres disciplines, parmi lesquelles prévalent peut-être l'esthétique et l'anthropologie. Aussi l'auteur s'est-il toujours, ici comme ailleurs, interdit de la refermer sur elle-même. La réception de l'héritage phénoménologique a été particulièrement féconde en France, où dans la brèche ouverte par Levinas, se sont déployées des pensées majeures telles que celles de Sartre et de Merleau-Ponty. Les essais réunis dans ce livre se présentent comme autant de lectures qui dégagent quelques-uns des moments qui ont prolongé ces grandes pensées : de Ricoeur et Thao à Derrida, de Dufrenne à Lyotard, de Granel à Janicaud. L'ouvrage laisse apparaître que les entreprises les plus audacieusement critiques à l'égard de la phénoménologie restent elles-mêmes, à des degrés divers, solidaires de l'héritage qu'elles ont reçu en partage. Cet article écrit par deux psychologues cliniciens met en évidence ce qui des difficultés apparentes entre mère et fils est le fruit du passé de violences conjugales et ce qui est de l’ordre des difficultés primaires du lien. À partir de l’étude d’une dyade mère-fils rencontrée en MECS au travers d’un dispositif praticien, trois types d’entretiens ont été mis en place : individuels, mère-enfant et fraternels. Et si parler d’une essence du féminin ou de la (...) femme peut faire sens, pour nous, aujourd’hui, que risque une philosophie académique (héritière d’habitudes épistémologiques culturellement patriarcales) à penser une sagesse proprement féminine ? À quoi pourrait ressembler une philosophie qui reconnaîtrait une spécificité au féminin ? Une éro-sophie est-elle concevable ? L’arrivée des femmes en philosophie doit-elle se traduire par une féminisation de la philosophie ? Par une masculinisation de la féminité ? La philosophie est-elle, au contraire, libre de toute appartenance de genre ? Summary As soon as he was appointed Minister of Public Instruction in 1863, Victor Duruy embarked on a major reform of French education. One of his most important initiatives was the creation of a new secondary curriculum designed to prepare for careers in industry, trade, and agriculture. Edme Fremy, professor at the Muséum d'histoire naturelle, took the opportunity of proposing a course of instruction in practical chemistry that would be offered at the Muséum for young men intending to work in (...) industry. Duruy approved the proposal, and funds were immediately made available. In contrast, Charles-Adolphe Wurtz, who led an internationally recognized research laboratory in organic chemistry in the Paris Faculty of Medicine, had difficulty in securing either administrative recognition or financial support. This article draws on the correspondence that Fremy and Wurtz exchanged with Duruy and senior officials in the Ministry between 1863 and 1869 to bring out the significance of the divergent ministerial responses to the two laboratories. This essay discusses two contributions of the principle of sufficient autonomy to educational justice. In Just Enough, Liam Shields criticizes instrumental accounts of autonomy. According to these accounts, autonomy is valuable insofar as it contributes to well-being. Shields argues that instrumental arguments fail to support mandatory autonomy education in all cases, while his non-instrumental principle of sufficient autonomy does support this. This essay develops a version of the instrumental argument and argues this version can do the work of supporting mandatory (...) autonomy education. Another contribution of the principle of sufficient autonomy is the requirement of talents discovery. According to Shields, the requirement of talents discovery renders Rawls’s principle of fair equality of opportunity more plausible, since one’s chances of accessing a given economic position depend on one’s opportunities to discover one’s innate talents. This essay argues that Rawlsian fair equality of opportunity does not have the same implications as the principle of sufficient autonomy as to which types of talents should be discovered and to what extent. A social partner’s emotions communicate important information about their motives and intentions. However, people may discount emotional information that they believe their partner has regulated with the strategic intention of exerting social influence. Across two studies, we investigated interpersonal effects of communicated guilt and perceived strategic regulation in trust games. Results showed that communicated guilt (but not interest) mitigated negative effects of trust violations on interpersonal judgements and behaviour. Further, perceived strategic regulation reduced guilt’s positive effects. Danielle Macbeth offers a new account of mathematical practice as a mode of inquiry into objective truth, and argues that understanding the nature of mathematical practice provides us with the resources to develop a radically new conception of ourselves and our capacity for knowledge of objective truth.

Jan Zwicky's fertile essays expose by contrast the aridity of much contemporary writing about the point of humanistic endeavor and intellectual life. Thinking, in her account, is importantly the work of imagination. The more common focus on critical thinking, in arguments on behalf of liberal arts pedagogy, does put a salutary emphasis on some aspects of thoughtfulness, for instance, use of evidence and argumentation, but Zwicky is right that this approach fails to articulate a standard for synthetic, imaginative discernment that (...) meaningfully grasps the world. Zwicky usefully provides an account of just such a standard. Yet her argument that “other than pointing and hoping, there are no rules, no algorithms, by which human perception of a gestalt may be facilitated” sells the work of teachers short. An alternative case is made by Plato in his representation of Socrates-as-teacher, and most of this article is a case study of passages from the Republic. (shrink)

Despite intensive work by human rights organizations to garner global condemnation of torture, in the years since the atrocities of Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay were exposed, support in the United States for the use of torture has increased, and torture also attracts significant support in many other countries. This paper seeks to understand the affective work that the ‘ticking time bomb scenario’ and its imagined dramatization does in shaping how torture is understood. The literature is replete with debates over (...) whether the scenario distorts or accurately describes the actual circumstances in which decisions about torture occur, and the moral criteria that ought to be brought to the decision-making process. In describing the scenario as a “thought experiment,” however, these analyses obscure the work that this imagined scene does in shaping how people evaluate the use of torture – work that takes place at the affective and somatic levels. Induced into a process of racially inflected and affectively laden identifications and aversions, the paper suggests that the “subjects” of this thought experiment do very little thinking and thus fact-based or logical counter-arguments are of little use in shifting evaluations of torture. Rather, we need to understand the affective work that somatically grounded stories do in normalizing and inducing subjects to embrace torture. The paper is particularly interested in how imagined scenarios can be used to institute affects that freeze and immobilize, and how we might construct other narratives to encourage more dynamic and fluid forms of affective experience and identification. Exploring the link between narratives and more dynamic affects may offer more productive strategies for encouraging people to shift positions as they confront new evidence and encounter other experiences and bodies. This article explores the Sartrean concept of the spirit of seriousness so as to better understand contemporary sightseeing tourism. Sartre's spirit of seriousness involves two central characteristics: the first understands values as transcendent, fixed objects, and the second—less acknowledged—understands material, physical objects as instantiating these transcendent values. I interpret the behavior of at least some contemporary tourists who travel to “mustsee” destinations as a subscription to both aspects of the spirit of seriousness and to a belief that the objects and (...) destinations of tourist sites contain these transcendent, immutable values, such as “Art,” “Culture,” “Liberty,” etc. These “must-see” objects and destinations can thereby be understood to make “obligatory demands” of tourists, compelling them to visit. I argue that this serious mode of traveling to “must-see” sites is a form of Sartrean bad faith, as well as an evasion of the potential existential anguish that travel can evoke. (shrink)

Moral agency status is often given to those individuals or entities which act intentionally within a society or environment. In the past, moral agency has primarily been focused on human beings and some higher-order animals. However, with the fast-paced advancements made in artificial intelligence, we are now quickly approaching the point where we need to ask an important question: should we grant moral agency status to AI? To answer this question, we need to determine the moral agency status of these (...) entities in society. In this paper I argue that to grant moral agency status to an entity, deliberate norm-adherence must be possible. In this paper I argue that, under the current status quo, AI systems are unable to meet this criterion. The novel contribution this paper makes to the field of machine ethics is first, to provide at least two criteria with which we can determine moral agency status. We do this by determining the possibility of deliberate norm-adherence through examining the possibility of deliberate norm-violation. Second, to show that establishing moral agency in AI suffer the same pitfalls as establishing moral agency in constitutive accounts of agency. (shrink)

Hoping to expand upon public philosophy endeavors within higher education, the following captures the story behind the course Dialogue, Integration, and Action. The course has yielded a number of innovative pedagogical tools and engagement strategies likely to be of value to philosophy instructors seeking to explore a more participatory, experiential educational approach. As a transdisciplinary, community-engaged philosophy class, it engages students in the theories and practices of deliberative democracy and activism, encouraging the development of dialogic skills for their personal, professional, (...) and civic lives. By documenting the community-instructor-student collaborative design of the university course; the feminist pragmatist philosophic commitments underlying its design; the community-led and student-facilitated dialogue and the subsequent public report, as well as the impact of this work on the students, the community partner, and the instructor, the article highlights the benefits and the challenges of undergraduate philosophic engagement that emerges from and responds to place-based needs. Russell’s theory of descriptions in “On Denoting” has long been hailed as a paradigm of the sort of analysis that is constitutiue of philosophical understanding. It is not the only model of logical analysis available to us, however. On Frege’s quite different view, analysis provides not a reduction of some problematic notion to other, unproblematic ones -- as Russell’s analysis does -- but instead a deeper, clearer articulation of the very notion with which we began. This difference, I suggest, is (...) grounded in their two very different conceptions of the nature of language / thought; and it grounds in turn two very different conceptions of the nature of philosophical understanding.
