Enhancing the Role and Effectiveness of Corporate Social Responsibility Reports: The Missing Element of Content Verification and Integrity Assurance.S. Prakash Sethi, Terrence F. Martell & Mert Demir - 2017 - Journal of Business Ethics 144 (1):59-82.
Corporate Social Responsibility reporting by large corporations has witnessed phenomenal growth over the last two decades. The voluntary nature of these disclosures, however, has led to inconsistencies in reporting formats, treatment, and inclusion of various contextual elements, and a lack of robust measures pertaining to the quality and accuracy of the reports’ content. Efforts to address these drawbacks such as Global Reporting Initiative and ISO 26000 have proven unsatisfactory due to their primary emphasis on process for creating CSR reports without (...)

Perceptions and Intentions Toward Medical Assistance in Dying Among Canadian Medical Students.James Falconer, Félix Couture, Koray K. Demir, Michael Lang, Zachary Shefman & Mark Woo - 2019 - BMC Medical Ethics 20 (1):22.
Medical assistance in dying was legalized in Canada in 2016. As of July 2017, approximately 2149 patients have accessed MAID. There remains no national-level data on the perspectives of future physicians about MAID or its changing legal status. We provide evidence from a national survey of Canadian medical students about their opinions, intentions, and concerns about MAID. From October 2016 to July 2017, we distributed an anonymous online survey to all students at 15 of Canada’s 17 medical schools. The survey (...)

This study investigates the variations in the quality and comprehensiveness of 104 corporate social responsibility reports published by the world’s largest financial institutions in 2012. Using a novel measure of CSR report quality, we examine the impact of certain national, legal, and firm-level factors that might explain differences in the overall quality and extent of coverage of various issues in these reports. Our findings show that legal factors and CSR environment in a firm’s country of headquarters play an important role (...)

Counterfactuals Vs. Conditional Probabilities: A Critical Analysis of the Counterfactual Theory of Information.Hilmi Demir - 2008 - Australasian Journal of Philosophy 86 (1):45 – 60.
Cohen and Meskin 2006 recently offered a counterfactual theory of information to replace the standard probabilistic theory of information. They claim that the counterfactual theory fares better than the standard account on three grounds: first, it provides a better framework for explaining information flow properties; second, it requires a less expensive ontology; and third, because it does not refer to doxastic states of the information-receiving organism, it provides an objective basis. In this paper, I show that none of these is (...)

Electoral Innovation in Competitive Authoritarian States: A Case for the Nominated Member of Parliament in Singapore.Walid Jumblatt Abdullah - 2016 - Japanese Journal of Political Science 17 (2):190-207.
This article investigates the efficacy of a form of electoral innovation unique to the island-state of Singapore, the Nominated Member of Parliament scheme, and its impact on democratic governance, in light of the changing political landscape. A comparative perspective will be employed and broader conclusions on electoral engineering will be reached, especially for democratizing countries. Contrary to conventional scholarly wisdom, I argue that the NMP scheme can actually boost democratic representation in the country, considering the changing political landscape in the (...)

Trapezoidal Linguistic Cubic Fuzzy TOPSIS Method and Application in a Group Decision Making Program.Shah Hussain, Muhammad Aslam, Fazli Amin, Saleem Abdullah & Aliya Fahmi - 2019 - Journal of Intelligent Systems 29 (1):1283-1300.
The aim of this paper is to define some new operation laws for the trapezoidal linguistic cubic fuzzy number and Hamming distance. Furthermore, we define and use the trapezoidal linguistic cubic fuzzy TOPSIS method to solve the multi criteria decision making method. The new ranking method for trapezoidal linguistic cubic fuzzy numbers are used to rank the alternatives. Finally, an illustrative example is given to verify and prove the practicality and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Trapezoidal cubic fuzzy numbers are an extraordinary cubic fuzzy set on a real number set. TzCFNs are useful for dealing with well-known quantities in decision data and decision making problems themselves. This paper is about multi-attribute group decision making problems in which the attribute values are stated with TzCFNs, which are solved by developing a new decision method based on power average operators of TzCFNs. The new operation laws for TzCFNs are given. Hereby, the power average operator of real numbers (...)

In this paper, we report on the orientations of Turkish college students to interpersonal arguing and compare them with American students’ predispositions for arguing. In measuring the argument orientations, a group of instruments was utilized: argument motivations, argument frames, and taking conflict personally. Turkish data come from 300 college students who were asked to complete self-report surveys. Analyses contrast the mean scores of the Turkish and American respondents, offer gender-based comparisons in the Turkish data, and show whether religiosity has an (...)

Cubic Ordered Weighted Distance Operator and Application in Group Decision-Making.Muhammad Shakeel, Saleem Abdullah & Rehan Ahmed - 2019 - Journal of Intelligent Systems 29 (1):440-458.
Group decision-making is a very useful technique for ranking the group of alternatives. The ordered weighted distance operator is a new tool in group decision-making problems. In this paper, we apply the OWD operator on cubic information. We develop a new operator, the so-called cubic OWD operator, and study the different properties of it. We also discuss some particular cases of COWD. Finally, we develop a general algorithm for group decision-making problems using the COWD operator and give an application to (...)

Gray Method for Multiple Attribute Decision Making with Incomplete Weight Information Under the Pythagorean Fuzzy Setting.Muhammad Sajjad Ali Khan, Saleem Abdullah & Peide Lui - 2018 - Journal of Intelligent Systems (1):858-876.
In this study, we developed an approach to investigate multiple attribute group decision-making problems, in which the attribute values take the form of Pythagorean fuzzy numbers whose information about attribute weights is incompletely known. First, the Pythagorean fuzzy Choquet integral geometric operator is utilized to aggregate the given decision information to obtain the overall preference value of each alternative by experts. In order to obtain the weight vector of the criteria, an optimization model based on the basic ideal of the (...)

Pythagorean Fuzzy Einstein Hybrid Averaging Aggregation Operator and its Application to Multiple-Attribute Group Decision Making.Khaista Rahman, Saleem Abdullah, Asad Ali & Fazli Amin - 2019 - Journal of Intelligent Systems 29 (1):736-752.
Pythagorean fuzzy set is one of the successful extensions of the intuitionistic fuzzy set for handling uncertainties in information. Under this environment, in this paper, we introduce the notion of Pythagorean fuzzy Einstein hybrid averaging aggregation operator along with some of its properties, namely idempotency, boundedness, and monotonicity. PFEHA aggregation operator is the generalization of Pythagorean fuzzy Einstein weighted averaging aggregation operator and Pythagorean fuzzy Einstein ordered weighted averaging aggregation operator. The operator proposed in this paper provides more accurate and (...)

Some Interval-Valued Pythagorean Fuzzy Einstein Weighted Averaging Aggregation Operators and Their Application to Group Decision Making.Khaista Rahman, Saleem Abdullah & Muhammad Sajjad Ali Khan - 2019 - Journal of Intelligent Systems 29 (1):393-408.
In this paper, we introduce the notion of Einstein aggregation operators, such as the interval-valued Pythagorean fuzzy Einstein weighted averaging aggregation operator and the interval-valued Pythagorean fuzzy Einstein ordered weighted averaging aggregation operator. We also discuss some desirable properties, such as idempotency, boundedness, commutativity, and monotonicity. The main advantage of using the proposed operators is that these operators give a more complete view of the problem to the decision makers. These operators provide more accurate and precise results as compared the (...)

Self-Adaptive Mussels Wandering Optimization Algorithm with Application for Artificial Neural Network Training.Ahmed A. Abusnaina, Rosni Abdullah & Ali Kattan - 2019 - Journal of Intelligent Systems 29 (1):345-363.
The mussels wandering optimization is a recent population-based metaheuristic optimization algorithm inspired ecologically by mussels’ movement behavior. The MWO has been used successfully for solving several optimization problems. This paper proposes an enhanced version of MWO, known as the enhanced-mussels wandering optimization algorithm. The E-MWO aims to overcome the MWO shortcomings, such as lack in explorative ability and the possibility to fall in premature convergence. In addition, the E-MWO incorporates the self-adaptive feature for setting the value of a sensitive algorithm (...)

Vacuum Energy as the Origin of the Gravitational Constant.Durmuş A. Demir - 2009 - Foundations of Physics 39 (12):1407-1425.
We develop a geometro-dynamical approach to the cosmological constant problem (CCP) by invoking a geometry induced by the energy-momentum tensor of vacuum, matter and radiation. The construction, which utilizes the dual role of the metric tensor that it structures both the spacetime manifold and energy-momentum tensor of the vacuum, gives rise to a framework in which the vacuum energy induced by matter and radiation, instead of gravitating, facilitates the generation of the gravitational constant. The non-vacuum sources comprising matter and radiation (...)

Conceptualizing Jihad Among Southeast Asia’s Radical Salafi Movements.Kamarulnizam Abdullah & Mohd Afandi Salleh - 2015 - Journal for the Study of Religions and Ideologies 14 (42):121-146.
The major argument in this article is that the contemporary concept of jihad inclines to have a heavy personal political baggage. In Southeast Asia, the talibanization and the influence of the al-Qaeda interpretation of the jihad appear to have made their inroad in regional radical salafi movements such as the Jamaah Islamiyah, Jama’ah Anshorut Tauhid, and Hizbut Tahrir. Radical salafi differs from the traditional salafi given its belief in the use of force to achieve religious-political objectives. Indonesia has been the (...)

In this paper, we introduce the concept of the Pythagorean hesitant fuzzy set, which is the generalization of the intuitionistic hesitant fuzzy set under the restriction that the square sum of its membership degrees is ≤1. In decision making with PHFSs, aggregation operators play a key role because they can be used to synthesize multidimensional evaluation values represented as Pythagorean hesitant fuzzy values into collective values. Under PHFS environments, Pythagorean hesitant fuzzy ordered weighted averaging and Pythagorean fuzzy ordered weighted geometric (...)

One cannot deny that, even when not explicit, ethical themes run throughout Deleuze's works. Indeed, the method of dramatization directly relates to the production of ethical forms of being. As a method of investigation – critique, if one will – dramatization offers a consistent but dynamic method for interpreting and creating concepts. At the heart of such a method is the attempt to seek the anti-anthropological, anti-hegemonic and anti-representational forces described by Friedrich Nietzsche. It is at the level of this (...)

What is Conditional Probability?Hilmi Demir - 2016 - Kilikya Felsefe Dergisi / Cilicia Journal of Philosophy 3 (2):1-15.
In the standard and traditional view, the concept of conditional probability is defined with what is known as the ratio formula: the probability of B given A is the ratio between the probability of A and B and the probability of A. It is well known that this definition does not match the conceptual and mathematical expectations that we have from conditional probability, especially for the probability values at the limits. Thus, as pointed out by several philosophers such as Popper (...)

Cross-cultural differences in argumentation may be explained by the use of different norms of reasoning. However, some norms derive from, presumably universal, mathematical laws. This inconsistency can be resolved, by considering that some norms of argumentation, like Bayes theorem, are mathematical functions. Systematic variation in the inputs may produce culture-dependent inductive biases although the function remains invariant. This hypothesis was tested by fitting a Bayesian model to data on informal argumentation from Turkish and English cultures, which linguistically mark evidence quality (...)
