  1. EQUALITY, COMMUNITY, AND THE SCOPE OF DISTRIBUTIVE JUSTICE: A PARTIAL DEFENSE OF COHEN's VISION.Dong-Ryul Choo - 2014 - Socialist Studies 10 (1):152-173.
Luck egalitarians equalize the outcome enjoyed by people who exemplify the same degree of distributive desert by removing the influence of luck. They also try to calibrate differential rewards according to the pattern of distributive desert. This entails that they have to decide upon, among other things, the rate of reward, i.e., a principled way of distributing rewards to groups exercising different degrees of the relevant desert. However, the problem of the choice of reward principle is a relatively and undeservedly (...)

Temperature Forecasting Via Convolutional Recurrent Neural Networks Based on Time-Series Data.Zao Zhang & Yuan Dong - 2020 - Complexity 2020:1-8.
Today, artificial intelligence and deep neural networks have been successfully used in many applications that have fundamentally changed people’s lives in many areas. However, very limited research has been done in the meteorology area, where meteorological forecasts still rely on simulations via extensive computing resources. In this paper, we propose an approach to using the neural network to forecast the future temperature according to the past temperature values. Specifically, we design a convolutional recurrent neural network model that is composed of (...)

  16. Practicing Intersectionality in Sociological Research: A Critical Analysis of Inclusions, Interactions, and Institutions in the Study of Inequalities.Hae Yeon Choo & Myra Marx Ferree - 2010 - Sociological Theory 28 (2):129 - 149.
In this article we ask what it means for sociologists to practice intersectionality as a theoretical and methodological approach to inequality. What are the implications for choices of subject matter and style of work? We distinguish three styles of understanding intersectionality in practice: group-centered, process-centered, and system-centered. The first, emphasizes placing multiply-marginalized groups and their perspectives at the center of the research. The second, intersectionality as a process, highlights power as relational, seeing the interactions among variables as multiplying oppressions at (...)

    A Heterogeneous Multiattribute Group Decision-Making Method Based on Intuitionistic Triangular Fuzzy Information.Jun Xu, Jiu-Ying Dong, Shu-Ping Wan, De-Yan Yang & Yi-Feng Zeng - 2019 - Complexity 2019:1-18.
How to aggregate decision information in heterogeneous multiattribute group decision making is vital. The aim of this paper is to develop an approach to aggregating decision data into intuitionistic triangular fuzzy numbers for heterogeneous MAGDM problems with real numbers, interval numbers, triangular fuzzy numbers, trapezoidal fuzzy numbers, and triangular intuitionistic fuzzy number. Using the relative closeness of technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution and geometry entropy method, we first present a general approach to aggregating heterogeneous information into (...)

Lump Solutions and Interaction Solutions for the Dimensionally Reduced Nonlinear Evolution Equation.Baoyong Guo, Huanhe Dong & Yong Fang - 2019 - Complexity 2019:1-9.
In this paper, by means of the Hirota bilinear method, a dimensionally reduced nonlinear evolution equation is investigated. Through its bilinear form, lump solutions are obtained. We construct interaction solutions between lump solutions and one soliton solution by choosing quadratic functions and exponential function. Interaction solutions with the combinations of exponential functions and sine function are also given. Meanwhile, the figures of these solutions are plotted. The dynamical characteristics and properties of obtained solutions are discussed, respectively. The results show that (...)

Automatic Implementation of Fuzzy Reasoning Spiking Neural P Systems for Diagnosing Faults in Complex Power Systems.Haina Rong, Kang Yi, Gexiang Zhang, Jianping Dong, Prithwineel Paul & Zhiwei Huang - 2019 - Complexity 2019:1-16.
As an important variant of membrane computing models, fuzzy reasoning spiking neural P systems were introduced to build a link between P systems and fault diagnosis applications. An FRSN P system offers an intuitive illustration based on a strictly mathematical expression, a good fault-tolerant capacity, a good description for the relationships between protective devices and faults, and an understandable diagnosis model-building process. However, the implementation of FRSN P systems is still at a manual process, which is a time-consuming and hard (...)

Social Trust and Corporate Misconduct: Evidence From China.Wang Dong, Hongling Han, Yun Ke & Kam C. Chan - 2018 - Journal of Business Ethics 151 (2):539-562.
We study whether greater social trust is associated with a lower incidence of corporate misconduct. Both social norm and network theory suggest that social trust can affect managerial behavior and reduce the likelihood of misconduct behavior. Consistent with this prediction, we find that social trust is negatively associated with corporate misconduct behavior. Moreover, we show that, when media coverage is higher, the negative relation between social trust and corporate misconduct behavior is more pronounced. Further analyses suggest that social trust can (...)

Chang 7 oil layer from the Upper Triassic Yanchang Formation is an important layer for hydrocarbon exploration. Most studies on Chang 7 oil layer have focused on the source rocks, while the research on the sandstone is still inadequate, especially on petrography and geochemical characteristics. Using seven sandstone samples of Chang 7 oil layer in Yanhe Profile, the grain size analysis, major elements, trace elements, and rare earth elements were tested. The results show that the sandstone of fine-grained sediments of (...)

We investigate the limits of communication and leadership in avoiding coordination failure in minimum effort games. Our environment is challenging, with low benefits of coordination relative to the effort cost. We consider two leader types: cheap-talk leader-communicators who suggest an effort level, and first-mover leaders who lead by example. Both types of leadership have some ability to increase effort in groups with no history, but are insufficient in groups with a history of low effort. Using the strategy method for followers’ (...)

The "Visual Word Form Area" is Involved in Successful Memory Encoding of Both Words and Faces.L. Mei, G. Xue, C. Chen, F. Xue, M. Zhang & Q. Dong - unknown
Previous studies have identified the critical role of the left fusiform cortex in visual word form processing, learning, and memory. However, this so-called visual word form area's other functions are not clear. In this study, we used fMRI and the subsequent memory paradigm to examine whether the putative VWFA was involved in the processing and successful memory encoding of faces as well as words. Twenty-two native Chinese speakers were recruited to memorize the visual forms of faces and Chinese words. Episodic (...)

    Semi-Supervised Cross-Modal Retrieval Based on Discriminative Comapping.Li Liu, Xiao Dong & Tianshi Wang - 2020 - Complexity 2020:1-13.
Most cross-modal retrieval methods based on subspace learning just focus on learning the projection matrices that map different modalities to a common subspace and pay less attention to the retrieval task specificity and class information. To address the two limitations and make full use of unlabelled data, we propose a novel semi-supervised method for cross-modal retrieval named modal-related retrieval based on discriminative comapping. The projection matrices are obtained to map multimodal data into a common subspace for different tasks. In the (...)

The Prior Obligations Objection to Theological Stateism.Frederick Choo - 2019 - Faith and Philosophy 36 (3):372-384.
Theological stateist theories, the most well-known of which is Divine Command Theory (DCT), ground our moral obligations directly in some state of God. The prior obligations objection poses a challenge to theological stateism. Is there a moral obligation to obey God’s commands? If no, it is hard to see how God’s commands can generate any moral obligations for us. If yes, then what grounds this prior obligation? To avoid circularity, the moral obligation must be grounded independent of God’s commands; and (...)

The Effects of Guanfacine and Phenylephrine on a Spiking Neuron Model of Working Memory.Peter Duggins, Terrence C. Stewart, Xuan Choo & Chris Eliasmith - 2016 - Topics in Cognitive Science 8 (4):117-134.
We use a spiking neural network model of working memory capable of performing the spatial delayed response task to investigate two drugs that affect WM: guanfacine and phenylephrine. In this model, the loss of information over time results from changes in the spiking neural activity through recurrent connections. We reproduce the standard forgetting curve and then show that this curve changes in the presence of GFC and PHE, whose application is simulated by manipulating functional, neural, and biophysical properties of the (...)

Controversy persists over the ethics of compensating research participants and providing posttrial benefits to communities in developing countries. Little is known about residents' views on these subjects. In this study, interviews about compensation and posttrial benefits from a hypothetical HIV vaccine trial were conducted in Uganda’s Rakai District. Most respondents said researchers owed the community posttrial benefits and research compensation, but opinions differed as to what these should be. Debates about posttrial benefits and compensation rarely include residents' views like these, (...)

Impacts of Diagenesis of Tight Sandstone Gas Reservoir on Reservoir Physical Properties: A Case Study, Sulige Gas Field, Ordos Basin, China.Shuwei Ma, Dazhong Ren, Lifa Zhou, Fengjuan Dong, Shi Shi, Mumuni Amadu & Jun Sheng - 2019 - Interpretation 7 (3):T687-T699.
Diagenesis is one of the most important factors impacting the performance of many reservoirs and is perhaps the most important factor impacting the performance of tight sandstone reservoirs, such as those of the Sulige gas field in the Ordos Basin of China. However, the relationship between diagenesis and related parameters determining reservoir physical properties remains unclear. Therefore, we have analyzed experimental data from high-pressure mercury intrusion porosimetry, scanning electron microscopy, and thin sections in addition to using a porosity recovery calculation (...)
